Monday morning, a fire started in the Anaheim Hills, which is an open canyon ares. Evacuations have been ordered.

No threat to Disneyland, but it is quite smoky here (I am at Ball and Euclid now, less than a mile from the parks.)

The 91 freeway is inpacted.

Quick update. Over 2,000 acres and 6 homes lost, and no containment. The area is a lot of open spaces, and expensive tract homes that border the open land. Disneyland has a lot os smoke (strong smell) and sometimes an orange glow in the sky. Ash is falling on guests.

No real chance it will reach the heart of Anaheim.

Well, now the Guardians tower doesn't look so out of place.

For those planning to go the DLR tomorrow. The fire is only 5% contained, and they don't expect much of a change overnight, so plan for smoke, and if you have lung issues, you might want to cancel.

Not just people with lung issues. Seniors and children are at greater risk, as are others with a variety of health compromises. A month and more ago, locally we endured a few weeks of wildfire smoke and ash-fall. I have a heart condition that often leaves me with ineffective circulation and low oxygen levels, and the smoke caused enough distress for me that I basically had to stay inside for two weeks. This is nothing to take too lightly.

Are you in Oregon? About a month ago we also had terrible smoke. The air quality got as high as 435. Hazardous level. Good is anywhere from 0-50. :grumpy:

No, but pretty close. I'm on the coast in Humboldt County, California, so usually the smoke I encounter out in public involves a contact high. We had some big inland wildfires at the time with winds blowing west.

Currently, our area is affected by wildfires to the south of us that have closed Highway 101, knocked out AT&T DSL service, and cut off 911 service to a local city for some time today. The Anaheim situation is bad, but the Santa Rosa vicinity is going though hell. October seems very late to still be this active in the fire season, but maybe that is becoming the new normal.

I'll use this opportunity to post an updating fire map of the US and beyond. It's sourced from a local news blog so it opens to the big hotspot to our south, but anyone interested can drag it around to see what's going on through the region.

I heard the wind is supposed to switch directions later today, so it should clear up pretty quickly...

I assume that Disneyland has canceled any fireworks for the time being. Anyone able to confirm.

Prayers for those in the affected areas.

Nope, Disneyland hasn't cancelled fireworks or made any operational changes. This is miles away from Disneyland and has no impact on fireworks or theme park business, nor could any fireworks have any impact on the brush fire up in the hills. Disneyland has a Halloween Screams fireworks show scheduled for tonight at 9:45.

The most recent evacuation map is here. http://www.ocregister.com/2017/10/09/this-map-shows-where-the-anaheim-hills-brush-fire-is-burning/

Woke up to blue skies in Villa Park this morning, but with a smoky haze over the horizon. Although my morning coffee cup was rattled by a low-level flyover of the giant DC-10 air tanker they are using to drop retardant on the fire a few miles east. Impressive stuff!

The great State of California has a small fleet of these retro-fitted DC-10 Air Tankers they use for fire season. One is currently dedicated to the Anaheim Hills brush fire, while the rest are working the fires 500 miles north in Napa Valley this week.

Geeky Disneyland Connection: McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft based out of Long Beach, California was a longtime sponsor of Tomorrowland attractions, with Flight to The Moon and Mission To Mars. Big models of those DC-10's used to be featured in the pre-show area for Mission To Mars. Donald Douglas Jr. was one of the first members of Club 33 in 1967. McDonnell-Douglas was bought by Boeing back in the 2000's.
