Festival of Fantasy Parade coming to Magic Kingdom in 2014

Sleeping Beauty is my favourite Disney animated feature. To finally see "hero" Phillip (instead of in his fashion accessory mode with stupid looking hat) and the great climax represented like this with a fire breathing dragon float and raven/thorn performers is fantastic!
Seriously, that whole unit was like watching the scene from the film unfold before your eyes. Very well choreographed and executed. And that Prince Phillip in his battle costume is just...oomph. Makes you want to be a damsel in distress.

Hmmmmm.... I like it. A beautiful parade, and FINALLY WDW has a proper up-to-date Disney Parade from WDI-CE... but it does feel like pretty standard faire...and not quite as conceptually ambitious as Steven's last few parades (but he does seem to get to experiment more concept-wise overseas).
The music is nice...not quite as catchy as Soundsational or Happiness is Here...but I do like it. More orchestral than Steven's last few parades.

I think the thing that's a bit of let down for me is that the when the parade was announced, the concept art for the floats that were released we just 'some' of the units, as the press releases and Steven said there were more - and there was, but those units were pretty much lifted from Jubilation! (one of my absolute favorite Disney parades ever, by the way, and one of Steven's masterpieces), as we saw from sneak peaks and backstage pics. I guess I just let my mind play tricks on me that I was expecting a bit more I hadn't seen, but overall, it was pretty much what was revealed in the sneak peaks.
And I guess the other slight disappointment is that as much as I love those two Jubilation units, it would have been nice to see WDW/TDO actually fork out the money to create everything brand new for this parade. I guess those early rumors I had heard of Steven and his team trying to work with TDO's ever increasing budget cuts to his production actually may have been somewhat true.

But overall, he made it work, as he always does. (After 25+ years of doing it, he knows what he's doing). It would have just been nice for him to have gotten a full budget to create all the units brand new from the ground up.

It is actually more costly sometimes to purchase a float that is already established and owned by another park than to build from the ground up.

That may be true, but I've also been told it can be done due to budget issues.
Plus, if it did cost more, then why not just create new designs? Doesn't sound like TDO...
Anyway, just raises an eyebrow, as there were a few early rumblings about TDO making budget cuts as time went on.

Aurora's not in the parade. Snow Prince is missing as well.
It works though... Aurora's asleep during the scene represented by the thorns/dragon... and Snow wouldn't be dancing with the dwarfs if the prince were hanging around.

I love the fact that the supporting characters (thorns, seashell, circus tent girls) are almost more beautiful than the famous characters.

Thank you wdwmagic for the video with the dragon breathing fire! The first two streams I watched missed it altogether!

The parade was very good though I expected more... I think there is no theme in common between all these floats.. maybe it's because it was the first performance. the music is good, I have to see more photos ;)

Maybe that's the thing that leaves me a bit "hmmm, ok" with it. I'm quite used to Steven's latest productions having a very strong conceptual basis that ties them together.
This is more your "magic kingdom/classics" style parade where each unit reps one film (other than the beginning and ending). The cynical part of me says the "celebration of New Fantasyland" is kind of a convenient way to tie it together - though Brave really isn't there, Tangled is a set of restrooms, Pinocchio is a quick service eatery, Sleeping Beauty is where (?), etc. The beginning and ending really rep NFL more so, and act as bookends to the "concept", I suppose.

My only personal criticisms as of right now are -
-That it could use even a few more performers in key spots...behind a few floats, the opening, etc...
-It could use some "tweener" units following some floats, like the Fairy bikes, puppet animals, little drive units that Jubilation had... to kind of flesh out the units a bit more...
-More variations in the dancer costumes, particularly in the closing unit... (partly because I'm spoiled from seeing more designs/variations in each unit from parades in Tokyo, HK, and even CA...)...
-The Brave and The Little Mermaid floats are bit small in scale compared to other floats. With the parade supposedly being based on NFL...a bigger Mermaid unit would have been nice... and playing even bigger with the size and scale of those floats - esp. the Mermaid one...
-I personally would have loved to see more various dancer roles with more incredible unique costume concepts from Mirena Rada...rather than floods of characters as in the finale (but I suppose that's because I quite like how Tokyo puts their characters more up on the floats and slightly less on the street, making for more various dancer roles... and it makes the parade look more theatrical to me, rather than a character flood that WDW always seems to like to do)...
-Playing around more with the concept in the design of the floats themselves, as in the opening/closing units do (since they're based on Jubilation!)
- It kind of needs a small opening unit, like the Blue Fairy unit that Jubilation! had... something to anchor and announce the parade...and lead us into the grander Princess Garden unit. Putting the title unit right on the Princess garden, and having that as the opening float, feels a bit rushed.
-And as much as the finale Air Balloon really is cute, it's kind of anti-climatic compared to some of the truly grand finale units Steven usually puts at the end of his parades.

Something about it still falls a bit flat for me. Its so hard since I am not seeing it live, but I have only SounDSATIONAL to compare it to for recent Disney parades I have seen (saw that live). It still doesn't feel very cohesive, and even though I did the count and Soundsational has the same (9) number of units - and several of them smaller "drum" units. It still felt longer and "bigger" to me. I think I miss all of the additional filler units (fish, Mary and Bert on carousel horses etc) again maybe its live vs video, but I don't feel I am missing a lot by missing this one. All that said though I do think I looks great and it is wonderful to see (finally) a new parade at MK. "This one is a hit - it can run for 20 years!" - yikes you can hear those comments behind closed doors already!

OMG! My mind was truly blown away! After I was like, what did I just see!! Lol. Did this really just happen at WDW MK!! lol. Everyone's reaction was just amazing! Steve and the team did a amazing job! As they always do! Hope they keep on doing stuff for WDW!

I loved the music! May not be as good as HIH or soundsational BUT it's still very catchy and just refreshing! I loved what they did with Elsa and Anna! Very well done. Sure a separate float would have been nice but for what it was, it was great and much better than I thought!

A few things I noticed were Peter Pan might have had technical issues? And no segways for the three good fairies? Were those cut? never was going to happen? or just didn't happen yet?

I do agree it could have used more dancers and a few additions to the Little Mermaid float, but still was amazing!!

Also saw the strobes on most of the floats but the only ones that seem to work, or could somewhat see, were the Mickey and Minnie float. Bet that would look cool at night! I think FOF is very night worthy, daytime AND nighttime! Hope it happens soon! Although I didn't see any other lighting on the floats? are there some?

the post right before me sums up a lot of my thoughts. Mermaid and Brave feel like parts of bigger units. These just feel lost in scale. I also totally agree with the "character flood" comment. I think that is what bothered me a bit. I do appreciate variety of costumes, but I miss the dancer "filler" in a "parade costume" that was more the overall theme, then the different "scenes" with their respective players would come "on stage" then the "chorus" would do another "filler" number before the next big "scene". I also LOVE the dragon, but think it could have been the anchor of more of a "villain" or dark forces unit right before the triumphant finale.

Was the unifying theme music boxes (since some but not all units had "wind up" keys. Was it "clock work" toys since the dragon was gears and cogs. What was it that was the overarching "look" like soundsational and the "paper sculpture" look that tied it all together.

Anybody know what's up with the "float escorts"/leads walking next to the dragon float? They were wearing purple outfits that vaguely fit the look of the float, but clearly weren't performers. The other CMs escorting other floats were wearing the main gate costume, so these ones really stood out

Is it possibly related to the float being a lot wider than the others? It looked like it was pretty close to the roped-off areas

I found this on Youtube. I thought it was really funny. I know that every kid is different. Some May like the Sleeping Beauty unit and some will not.

Was the anchor on the Peter Pan float not suppose to swing with Captain Hook on it? It appeared if its locked in the back position or something. Looking at the top where it attaches, it appears that it has room for movement...
