Festival of Fantacy Dragon

The dragon is Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty". Not sure why they chose to make it mechanical, but it looks very cool.

Trying to revive the Epic Mickey franchise, perhaps?

Steampunk certainly can fit into fantasy settings. The Final Fantasy series and Dungeon & Dragons' Planescape setting (which you might remember because of the excellent Planescape: Torment PC game) come to mind. It is admittedly harder to justify in the context of this parade, as the only Disney animated film to have the steampunk motif is Atlantis: The Lost Empire (though you could make the argument for Treasure Planet; there was a little bit of it in The Great Mouse Detective, too).

If need be, I'll just pretend that Maurice and Tinker Bell (she's an inventor, too!) collaborated on it.

They said that? There is zero steampunk...
Since last Friday, we’ve been giving you some sneak peeks at a mysterious new float coming this spring to the “Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade” at Magic Kingdom Park. Today, we’re excited to reveal that this impressive addition represents none other than Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty” – in the form of an enormous, Steampunk-inspired dragon.

Straight from the Disney Parks Blog original post about the new float.

Stretching 35 feet in length and reaching 26 feet above the parade route, the Maleficent Dragon has been designed in partnership with Tony Award-winner Michael Curry, whose previous collaborations with Disney Parks have included the “Tapestry of Nations” parade at Epcot and “Finding Nemo – The Musical” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

@ImagineerDude and @Cmdr_Crimson I'm questioning the correlation between steampunk and FLE that I quoted in my post, not whether or not the dragon was steampunk. Sorry.

I don't think it has any correlation to FLE...Each Float for the New Parade represents different themes to the Movie or characters it represents...Like Ariel's float for Example..It has a sealife theme to it..

So to make it look more "Menacing" they took an idea and Steampunked the dragon for the Villians float..To make it more evil..

Yeah. Maleficent is scary, but imagine how much scarier she'd be if she were a robot! When she grabs you with those metal claws, you can't break free, because they're made of metal, and robots are strong!

I'm assuming this is going to be kind of a daytime Spectromagic.
Can't wait for this, however what makes a parade for me is the music. So I'll have to wait.
I'm expecting them to botch that one up. I'm hoping for a good music score that will give me goosebumps but I'm getting myself ready for a disappointment and a catchy pop song to underline the parade.

This one has Steve Davison behind it, I have confidence. Just look at World of Color, Disney Dreams, Soundsational and Fantasmic! (Tokyo).

I was sold when I heard Michael Curry was involved. But If there is a pop music score I will not want any part of this parade. By looking at some of the units and the dragon i'm thinking its possible that this parade is going to have more of a dramatic, emotional musical score then something poppy and upbeat, but that's just my prediction .
