Obviously we all love the Disney animated movies but there are great non-Disney ones too.

My favorites are The Swan Princess and Antz. The Swan Princess has great characters, a good storyline, and an amazing soundtrack. Love that movie. Antz is just amazing to me. Fantastic voice talents and also a great storyline (the first scene is classic Woody Allen). Anastasia is another good one. What are your favorites?

Can we go yet?

The Last Unicorn, Iron Giant, and the Secret of Nimh. The Iron Giant is so underrated but so good! :D I had forgotten all about it until I saw it on a list of the top 50 movies you never saw.

Secret of Nimh is great. My favorite though would have to be Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings. I watched that movie countless times through the years, and considered IT the greatest fantasy film until the Peter Jackson version came along. I also love the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons.

The Land Before Time- Just a beautiful movie and the poster child for movies that have been diminished by cheap sequels. You think Cinderella III was bad? There are XII numbered Land Before Time movies and more after they stopped numbering! I still remember getting these puppets from Pizza Hut. I had Spike. :) I almost got a little choked up just watching the teeny little clips of the movie in this commercial. There were definitely some scary/sad parts to it, so you felt like the characters really went through a lot and you felt relieved when they made it home.

Also: Anastasia and The Road to El Dorado

Tell me there's someone else out there who likes Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs!?! That's a good modern movie that's funny and quirky without being low-brow I thought. So easy to go low-brow/gross-out nowadays.

Edit: Oh geez and now I'm crying at 5:30 in the morning. I forgot just how emotional The Land Before Time was! It had the Bambi moment for my generation, except worse! Bambi didn't talk to his mom as she was d-y-i-n-g!

I LOVE The Land Before Time! Why did you have to post the scene where Littlefoot's mom dies?! That's the worst part of the movie. I was just listening to "If We Hold on Together" by Diana Ross yesterday and I almost started crying. I haven't seen The Land Before Time in years and I'd love to see it again. The only sequel I could tolerate was the second Land Before Time. I don't even remember what it's about (golden poppies?) but I remember liking it a lot as a kid.

How could I forget Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs? That's another favorite. When it came out it looked very corny to me. My friend told me to watch it because it was so funny and I'm glad I did. I couldn't stop laughing. My favorite character is the mayor.

simpsons movie, shrek... I'll be back

SHREK - love the animated movies with grown-up references thrown in.

I also really liked Rio. And Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs which was already mentioned.

My son is big into Lord of the Rings so I found the old Hobbit and Lord of the Rings cartoons for him on youtube. As much as I LOVED them as a kid I was surprised at how creepy they are!

I'm sure I will think of more!

There are literally too many excellent Japanese animated films to mention. Barefoot Gen, Akira, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell...
You could go on all day.

There's some pretty weird American/Canadian stuff from the '70s and '80s like Fritz the Cat, Rock & Rule, and Heavy Metal, but honestly most of it isn't worth your time. It's a real testament to the Walt Disney Company's ability to figure out a basic story BEFORE you start animating that a lot of these outfits can't seem to figure this out. Ralph Bakshi is an acquired taste that I haven't really acquired yet.

As for CGI, I honestly haven't enjoyed a single CGI animated film that wasn't animated by Pixar EXCEPT How to Train Your Dragon, which is easily better than half the Pixar movies. 9 was neat to look at, but it had awful pacing and a dumb story.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. That one's hilarious.

I have quite a few favorites, but I consider these ones must see non-Disneys.

Prince of Egypt - I'm not an overly religious person, but the backgrounds in this movie blew me away. Some of the scenes are fantastic and well composed. I remember seeing it in theaters when it first came out and leaving totally blown away with the artwork.

Cats Don't Dance - This is probably my absolute favorite when it comes to non-Disney movies. Its by far, the best Warner Bros. film to ever come out. The animation is over the top amazing, the story is superb and funny, the music is pretty decent...oh...and the animation....AMAZING!!! If you haven't seen this film....now is the time to find it on DVD, Laserdisc, download it, rent it (good luck), find it at a used music/movie store...

How To Train Your Dragon - I was determined to love this movie after Disney dumped Chris Sanders from American Dog (ie. Bolt). Fortunately, I didn't have to force myself into loving this movie. I thought the story was story and the character design was pretty good, the dragon character and his pantomime acting was brilliant.

^^^^Completely agree with The Prince of Egypt, it's definitely a favorite of mine. I always forget to add it to my list. There's not a single thing I don't like about that movie and it definitely beats a lot of the Disney animated films, for me.

How to Train Your Dragon = Jalapeño Dragon...or so says my cousin's little boy. We love to rename everything around here..... :P

Big non-Disney favorite for me strictly for sentimental reasons: Ferngully. That's the movie hubby & I rented & watched at his parents house on our first "date". How could I not fall for a boy who watched a cartoon with me?

My favorite animated movie is Puss in boots. In this movie the cat is so funny. When i watch this movie I was so laugh at the time.

I just saw this for the first time a couple of days ago and I couldn't stop laughing during the scene where Puss is about to kiss Kitty and in comes the gigantic baby goose!

Ferngully is one of the absolute best. My favorite scene is the part where Crysta and Zak are swimming in... I don' remember what it was exactly but they were swimming and there's a romantic song playing in the background. Best part.
