I wouldn't know

That has to be the most personally accurate heartbreak song for me.Wckd Queen said:The Dance by Garth Brooks
Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I the king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know
I might have changed it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
It's my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance![]()

barnum42 said:As a performer the reprise of the song "Colours of my Life" from Barnum got many people teary eyed. I've searched the net, but can't find the reprise lyrics.
The reprise is sung when Barnum's wife, Charity, is discovered to be ill and then passes away. It's at this point of the show that the actress playing Chrity has to perform her only circus skill in the whole show - a basic three ball juggle. This is something she says she found difficult at the best of times, but jokingly hated me as I made it worse for her each night due to the tears she had running down her face and blurring her vision.
The next problem for me was that I too had been crying and then had to sing the song "Prince of Humbug". Ever tried singing a all out song with a nose full of fresh snot?:

They are roughly the same, but the first time we hear the song, Barnum sings his verse all about the bright colours then exits at which point Charity sings her verse about the more subdued colours of nature.
The second time, they sing it together, with their verses overlapping. It was very intense during the performance as the death scene was done symbolically, as the song progressed Julia ,who played Charity (known as Chairy ot Barnum) get ups and starts to leave (this is her passing away) and as Barnum I stand and snuggle behind her, trying to hold on to her, but no amount of humbug can save her and she has to walk away. What choked up Julia up was that in rehearsal she was used to breaking away, but with the extra intensity of the performance she could feel me hanging on to the end and she had to physically pull herself away. Turn around and deliver the last line of the song.
Anyway I'm at home now and have dug the lyrics out. If you try and superimpose the moves I mention above you may get an idea of the scene.
Charity's lines
Barnum's lines
The colours of my life
The colours of my life
Are softer than a breeze
Are bountiful and bold
The purple glow of indigo
The silver-grey of eiderdown
The gleam of green and gold
The dappled green of trees
The splendor of a sunrise
The amber of a wheatfield
The dazzle of a flame
The hazel of a seed
The glory of a rainbow
The crystal of a raindrop
I'd put 'em all to shame
Are all I'll ever need
No quiet browns and greys
Your reds are much too bold
I'll take my days instead
In gold I find no worth
And fill them till they overflow
I'll fill my days with sage and brown
With rose and cherry red
The colours of the earth
During the next line Charity moves away from Barnum toward a group of jugglers stage right.
BARNUM: And if from by my side
My love should roam.
CHARITY: The colours of my life
Will shine a quiet light
To lead him home.
Music continues as Charity juggles three balls then tosses them one at a time to Barnum who begins to juggle them
BARNUM: (as he juggles)
.....Chairy
(She is gone)
Chairy!
(Music stops, Barnum is alone on the stage)
CHAIRY!
Not everybody understood what had happened, but very few of those who did were not choked by it and I have to admit to shedding a tear now remembering it. Whenever my Mother watches the video recording we made of the show, this scene always has her reaching for the tissues.
