Ok I kind of think that I understand it. You get one for a ride and you come back at that time and you don't have to wait...right?

OK what rides for each park do I need to get this for and do I go as soon as we get in to get them?

Yes, you should go right to that ride to get it when you get in the park, someone can take all the tickets and get the FP's while the other group walks to the other ride.

Epcot: Soarin', Test Track

MGM: RNR, TT, Little Mermaid

AK: Everest, Safari

MK: Peter Pan, Space M., Splash M., Big Thunder M.

Correct - for example:

MK opens at 9 a.m. You go into MK and over to Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. The FastPass Time above the FastPass Distribution Machines may say: RETURN TIME: 9:30-10:30.

Put in your tickets. (Don't worry if the return time changes as you're putting your tickets through...it changes in 5-minute increments, so it's no big deal.)
As you put in each ticket, a FastPass will come out, stating both the RETURN TIME and the Time You Can Get Your Next FastPass.

Come back between 9:30-10:30 and enter the FastPass line. You're good to go :~)

Found this online; I think it's a current list of all FASTPASS attractions:

Magic Kingdom
Epcot
Disney-MGM Studios
Disney's Animal Kingdom

Also at the bottom of the Fast Pass will be the time you can get another Fast Pass. Say you go to Soarin' at 12:00 PM and get a FP for a return time of 7:00 - 8:00 PM. At the bottom of that FP will be the next time slot you are available to get another FP. So technically you could have more than one. Usually this time is five minutes after the start time of the one you are holding, but again in the case of the long time between the time you get one and the time you can use it, you might be able to get a different one.

If you're not sure how to operate the FP machines then I'll be only too happy to come along and show you - you just pay for my airfare, accomodation, park tickets.....................

When your FP time arrives, you cannot just go jump on the ride. Rather you are then allowed to enter the FP line. The FP line is much shorter than the other line but it is still a line.

Just a little Animal Kingdom tip for ya! (And this is only if you're more into the wildlife than the thrill rides) Go to AK early in the morning and head straight for Kilimanjaro Safaris and get a FastPass. While waiting for your return time go into the Pangani Forest Exploration Trails (right next door). These trails are usually crowded and it is hard to appreciate this attraction if you have to push your way through while trying to see the exhibits contained within. They also announce the trails at the end of the Safaris so of course everyone exits the Safaris and heads for the Trails. If you take my advice the Trails will be empty first thing in the morning (and not too hot) and you'll be able to enjoy this attraction in peace. When you exit the Trails your return time for KS should be quickly approaching. Now you can go into the FP lineup and enjoy the Safaris. Sorry if this is a little off topic but you were asking about FP and I just had to share this tip with somebody... it worked for me!

You should also look into what the Standby time is when you arrive, especially when you're making a beeline for an attraction at park opening. If you arrive and the FastPass time is for 40-45 minutes in the future (while I believe is the minimum time ahead for FP) but the standby is posted at 5 minutes, why get a FastPass and then come back 45 minutes later when you can get on right now with a very small wait?

I remember a thread a long time ago where someone explained how it is possible in some cases to have three fast passes at once. But like you explained, it all depends on how far back the return time is.

In some cases at times it is. Some times some of the machines are not connected to the fast pass system. So you can get a ticket from there, and then from the ones that are connected to the system. And some of the rides will also spit out a "bonus" fast pass for something like ITtBaB or HISTA. (Shows that usually don't need a fast pass due to their ability to absorb a huge crowd at once) It all depends on how the system is configured on any given day. They are constantly tweaking and changing so what worked a few months ago, may or may not work now.
