Fantasyland Blueprints; A Viral Marketing Scheme?

I watched the clip on youtube of the FL announcements, and the intro seemed a little fishy to me.
He says something to the effect of, "I have no idea where these rumors came from!"...

Maybe I'm giving them too much credit... BUT If they wanted to create a bunch of hype in the Disney community, wouldn't it be genius of them to virally release a very low quality (non-official concept art) image for fans to chew on in anticipation (aka blueprint)?

Just a thought...

It would be a genius idea but I think they were pretty irked about the plans being released from what others have said.

They aren't that organized. No one is that organized. Unless you believe in massive conspiracy theories dreamed up in dramatically lit conference rooms with foreboding music playing in the background.

It was a legit leak of a legit blueprint. And it really ticked off the powers that be in Burbank.

Can you imagine how truly powerful Jay Rasulo's D23 Expo presentation would have been if Al Lutz hadn't already spilled the beans on Star Tours 2 for 2011 and a mystery person in France hadn't leaked the New Fantasyland blueprints?!? Jay would have had a truly shocking and newsworthy presentation at D23, instead of just a theatrical confirmation of rumors and concepts we already knew about.

Exactly. The only way they could have even come close to recapturing the power those two might have had is if they added an Imagination announcement or an unexpected bombshell of that magnitude.

These rumors were leaked between the periods of very bad things happening in WDW. Anything's truly possible, but not probable. Some people say it was to get attention from the Potter gang, others say a disgruntled imagineer wanted to show the world what they were missing out on, others say it was fake to begin with, it could of been leaked to stop bad publicity, and some people argued that this is a marketing scheme. Who to beleive? I don't know because they all make very good sense as to why this plan would be leaked. Oh well, it's over now. :D

Just think, it woul of been a very boring forum this past month if the blue prints weren't leaked. Whoever did leak them caused me to join this forum and be very active. :sohappy:

Star Tours involves many many actors. They probably weren't suprised this got leaked.

I doubt it was viral campaigning, in fact, from what I've heard, the higher-ups were very very annoyed about this leak and how it was supposed to be truely shocking and awe-inspiring

Don't get me wrong, I think the plans are amazing. It's just that this was simply a confirmation as opposed to something truly new.

Thanks to the Internet, I doubt there will EVER be big corporate "surprises" that are tied to pre-planned "announcement" events. Between the time a project is approved and a formal unveilling is planned, there are just too many people with Internet access to spill the secrets.

If Disney had tried to delay the Marvel announcement any longer than the time it took for the ink to dry on the contract, you can bet Variety, or Al Lutz, or some dude named "SpideyInsider" would have broken the story.

Likewise, if Rasulo had announced the FL Makeover the day it was approved, he could have taken credit instead of some anonymous Internet user who had access to the blueprints. (and don't forget, it was still a huge "surprise" to many who saw those blueprints---it just wasn't Disney who did it!)

I guarantee you if Disney had planned to "announce" any of the other rumored projects (Imagination, new AK attraction, etc) some blogger would have "pre-announced" it weeks ago, and then everyone would complain that "Disney told us what we already knew!"

Its unfortunate, but in the age of PDAs and computers...very little can ever be kept secret for too long. Face it, ever one loves the rush of spreading a good rumor. With the internet we can just spread it that much faster! Meetings like D23 will never have the impact going forward that they might have had just 5 years ago.

Regardless...its good to know that in the not too distant future, there will be something major to watch grow at MK!

God bless the "Ignore" button.
I was watching the E3 Expo (primarily about video games) and though a lot of the news had already been leaked, there were still a number of bombshells that managed to remain un-detonated until the show. If Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony can do it, I'd LIKE to think that WDW could keep SOMETHING under wraps...

Can you imagine how truly powerful Jay's presentation of ONLY ST2 would have been, sans leak?

I'm sorry, but DLPMagic is my hero. He/she virtually guaranteed that they couldn't change their mind.

Yes, and it was almost matter of fact. His post was effectively, "Oh yeah - there's a huge expansion being planned for Fantasyland, I'll look around for the blueprints."

Yes, and now that I look back on those first 36 hours after the blueprint leaked, I realize how hilariously funny the whole thing is!

Some guy in France popped up on this message board and said "Hey, you wanna see some cool blueprints of what they're going to do at WDW?" and the whole thing exploded across the Net! And the prints were pulled from some websites, but lived on at other sites and are easily available with a 10 second Google search. (I saved the blueprint to my computer from this very website a few hours after it was posted, and just referred to it on my desktop.) Isn't modern technology amazing! :ROFLOL:

It must have just killed Burbank to see that happen without any ability to stop it and have the D23 Expo lose a big thunderclap in the process.

I'll say it again... Can you imagine how shocking and newsworthy Jay Rasulo's presentation on Saturday would have been had DLPMagic not sent out the New Fantasyland blueprint? If they could have just kept New Fantasyland quiet for another month, D23 Expo would have gone down in the history books as a truly newsworthy event. Instead, Jay's speech just sort of became a cute theatrical confirmation of what we already knew about.
