I like to watch the Port Canveral web cam. I watched the Fantasy sail out today and when I looked in later it was coming back into port. Does anyone know why it came back?

I watched it sail out at 5 pm, and then got an email from MarineTraffic.com later that it had departed again. But I have no idea why it returned to port.

This from 13 News:

PORT CANAVERAL --
A medical emergency prompted the Disney Fantasy to return to Port Canaveral just hours after leaving Saturday, officials say.
A spokesperson for Disney Cruise Lines said the reason was for a "medical call" and did not have any other details, but said the ship would leave again the same night.
The cruise liner was scheduled for a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise.
Last weekend, a 4-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after nearly drowning in a pool aboard the same ship while it was still at port.

Thanks. I looked on local 6 and saw that as well. I hope everyone is okay. Sad way to start a vacation.

Not a good sign. I'm going on that ship in August...

4000 people onboard. This could be anything from a heart attack to seizures to anything else that the onboard medical team felt needed to be treated by the hospital, especially if it happened while they were still close enough. Definitely saved on medical transport costs for the guest, would've been worse if they were hundreds of miles out to sea and had to be airlifted.

She said what we've already read. They left port on time, sail away party went on without a hitch. Partially through the first dinner...there was an announcement made that there was a medical emergency and the ship would be returning to port. They were also told that they planned to leave again as soon as possible and the ship would make up for any lost time and distance overnight tonight...and that their itinerary would not be effected.

Eastern Caribbean itinerary is first two and a half days at sea. I'm sure they will have it full throttle to the first port.

I wish the very best to the return to good health for any person who is unwell. I am not sure if others feel the same but I am rather uncomfortable about all of this 'reporting' of peoples medical heath on DCL 'Cruise blogs', I find it a bit voyeuristic, I know the vast majority of people just want to wish the people concerned the very best, but there seems to have become some, 'ownership' of other peoples health conditions. These things shouldn't be commented on on blogs designed for research into Cruising and say meals and pools, it doesn't sit well with me, and its more akin to the low end market on magazines. I wish all the people all the best but wish also they have their dignity and we have respect for them in their hour of need. Things like this should be left for proper journalists in proper newspapers to report.

This morning the news said a young lad with diabetes had a attack. A 70's man had chest pains.

The lad that almost drown is alive. His is under a induced coma, and slowly recovery.

A pray for these folks please!

I "sort of" agree with you. I don't like the rush to judgment in the "So Sad" thread. I don't really need to know specifics of the people involved. BUT, a ship returning to port is real news, not tabloid fodder. It's unusual and most people want to know why it happened. So I can understand, and even appreciate to some degree, the fact that people scour the news and internet for first-hand reports.

I agree with you that I mostly just wish the people well. No one wants to have a medical issue on an expensive vacation. But I think most of us have a reasonable curiosity about why a cruise ship would turn around mid-sailing and return to port, whether it's medical, mechanical or otherwise. At least, it seems reasonable to me.

I like the way that the ''up market'' Disney sites like here and AllEars have avoided reporting this on there 'news pages' and stuck to Disney issues only, they tend to wait until they get the actual news, ie here on the Monorail accidents before and then report it in a considered way. I think about this boy every day, its so so sad, but feel more for the parents, The Facebook updates have shown the real tragedy of what is unfolding and the dilemmas there in. I feel for the other siblings.

Now, I think, how would I feel if myself or a loved one had a medical condition on a ship, and to add to that health scare, 'Cruise blogs', were reporting the ship turning around and 'you' had a 'heart attack' or ' Diabetes'. Privacy goes out of the window, dignity goes out of the window, your private life is up for discussion and comment, and people do not get it first hand, but a sense of 'ownership' takes hold, just for a cruise blog to say there first with any news related to Disney. I congratulate the WDW Magic forum news gatherers and All Ears forum for their, considered reporting, and understanding for the families who should only be in the spotlight, if they so wish.

Now the people posting 'likes' on facebook and posting good wishes, have clearly boosted the power of this family and helped in their hours of need, that's positive and humans pulling together with great empathy.

A few need to still learn, 'less is more', and not report, 'everything' 'instantly ' out of respect. Is it a cruise blog or a newspaper, do reporting holidays, meals and menus, mix with reporting peoples ill health?

I agree with your feelings. To me the problem with this is that somebody's private issues are drawn out into the public light even more than they are anyway with the person having a health problem that is being noticed by others (the people on the ship). I think there is something in humans that wants us to look if something bad happens. But for the person to whom it happens I think it takes some of their dignity away. I try not to look. If someone wants to take what happened to them public, like the parents of the little boy, that's their choice. But if people don't offer the information on their own, why pull it out into the open?

In a certain way I think the reporting about any incident happening on the ships is kind of the equivalent of certain theme parks blog that specialise in a million pictures of building fences and new planters at WDW which @WDW1974 loves to mock.

Given the thousands of people onboad each trip, I'm surprised there isn't more of this. Personally, I find it reassuring that Disney turns the ship around in the interest of very sick passengers whenever possible. In 60 hours, all they'd have to do is kick up the speed a Knot or two get to St. Thomas on time.
