Family 5K + 1/2 Marathon

Is it possible to complete both races if I've never done the 1/2 marathon before? I'm planning to run the 1/2 in 2012 and my mom is thinking of doing the Family 5K the same weekend. I know she'd feel more comfortable doing the 5K if I was doing it with her but she's concerned I won't have enough energy to finish the 1/2 if I do the 5K with her. Is it possible to do both if I've never done a 1/2 before?

2 runs in one weekend

Hi--

I don't know the official rules, but 2 years ago, my cousin ran both the half and the full marathon (she's unreal!!), so I'm pretty sure you can register for two events during the weekend.

The way we are doing it is our two sons 11 and 14 are doing the 5k and hubby and I are doing half marathon. For me personally, both in two days would be too much.

BUT- I am a very new runner who 18 months ago was 325 lbs and couldn't even WALK a 5k!
Would love to work up to the marathon one day!

Was looking at my 1/2 marathon training schedule in my "Running" book by John Stanton and it says I'm supposed to do a 3K steady run the day before my 1/2 marathon so I'm going to do the 5K.

I could do the 1/2 marathon but everyone in my party can't. So we are just doing the 5k together, I mean its vacation. If I want to run til I pass out I can do that any weekend here at home. :) But I'm really looking forward to all the neat things for a 5k through the Magic Kingdom.

WOW, now i wonder if I need to do it too?????? Hmmmmm.

My plan isn't to run the whole 5K. My plan is to do it in intervals, which means I'll run for so many minutes, then break to a brisk walk (a walk that is just on the points of breaking into a jog so I keep it under the 16 minute mile) for a minute and then back up into a run. I'll probably do it in intervals of 10 minutes of running and 1 minute of walking. This is the standard interval that is taught by the Running Room (It's the set of running stores that were founded up here by the guy that wrote my book - John Stanton). I have a watch that will allow me to set interval times on it so it will beep at the end of 10 minutes and then again after a minute.

I may even run the 1/2 marathon in a similar fashion in 2012 depending on how my training goes. I will do my 1/2 marathon training with the Running Room.

It depends on your personal level of fitness. There are a bunch of people that do the 5k, the 1/2, and the full marathon during Marathon Weekend (and call it the Dopey or Dumbo)

The same applies for any run just before a race. If you have been training a certain way, then you may be fine, while someone else may not be. It's just like the people that run after running. If you ever watch at some races, you will see a bunch of people who will run the course backwards after finishing. (Or at least part of it) It's not something that everyone can or should do, but these guys tend to fly through the course (at a great pace) and then run it again as a cool down. Not something your average runner could or should do, but they do it as that is how they train.

My training guide, which my 1/2 training course will follow as it's written by the founder of the Running Room, which is the store that I will do my 1/2 training with, states that you should do a 3K steady run the day prior to your 1/2 marathon. My plan was to run the 5K course with my mom doing it in intervals of run/walk at whatever interval she was comfortable at.

Then you should be fine. Doing a 5k at a full out speed shooting for a PR the day of or the day before another longer race isn't advisable. Doing one at a slower more relaxed pace shouldn't be an issue.

It depends on your goals and level of training. If you train properly, you can do it. I ran the Dopey (5K plus Goofy Challenge) back in '09 and felt good enough to walk around the park on Monday. Of course, this required months of fairly rigorous training.

If you're already doing Goofy, you're probably training consecutive days, so a 5K the day before is actually nice warm-up.

If it's your first time, rest is probably better. Then see how you feel afterwards and gauge running the 5K the next year.
