Experiences for those w/motion sickness

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I had a question regarding the conversation here.

I have a very high sensitivity to medication. Even the non-drowsy stuff puts me to "dead to the world" sleep within 30mins.

Has anyone tried the anti-sea sickness shot? I have had many friends who are even more prone to motion sickness than me tell me it was their life saver on past cruises. I have never been on a boat at all, for fear of being sick the whole time but am dying to go on a Disney cruise.

So, long question short, has anyone tried this shot and what were you're experiences with it?

Thanks!!

Well, I have to say that I too am pretty sensitive. Maybe not as much as you, but sensitive nonetheless. Our first cruise on the Dream was in July and on the way out to see on the first night I didn't get nauseated but I was very unsteady but the rest of the cruise I was fine. We went on a 3 day on the Dream in December and it was pretty rocky most of the time. Someone told us it was due to the changing of the water temperature. I took the "Less Drowsy Dramamine" the first night and it wiped me out the first night and most of the second day so by the time I started to feel good, it was over :( If you can stick it out the first night, you may need to go to bed earlier but avoiding the meds may help you feel better the rest of the time.

My wife and I cruised for our honeymoon (long before DCL existed, sadly). She was terribly sick for the first day and then got the shot and it was a miracle for her. She didn't feel sick at all for the rest of the trip. I think she only got it once, as well, but I can't be sure of that.

Also, as a disclaimer, this was 24 years ago, so "the shot" may be something entirely different now. But when she got it, it worked like a charm.

The three shots that I know of are Cyclizine, Dimenhydrinate, and Promethazine. From what I have read, Promethazine is the most common injectable medicine given on cruse ships. All three have the same drowsy side effect. As I understand it, if oral Dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) makes you drowsy than an injection of the same or similar drug will have a similar effect.

What you might want to try is ginger pills. Credible studies are few and far between on ginger, but they do point slightly in favor of it working for motion sickness. The good thing is that unless you take an extreme amount the only danger would be an allergic reaction.

In any case the trick is to take whatever medication you choose prior to getting on the ship. If you wait until you are sick, it will take time to recover.

Also, wanted to mention that non-drowsy or less-drowsy Dramamine totally knocks me out, too. I took Bonine which the label name for the active ingredient meclazine and it didn't make me drowsy at all. It's cheaper than the patch, too. Try different things while at home so you have your options down.

Thanks every one!

I think I will try a few meds before to see how I react. I keep hearing about the miracle of ginger pills, so that is probably going to be a must-bring for me. And then use the shot as a back up if needed. :)

I still have plenty of time, just like getting all of my research done well ahead of time so there aren't too many unhappy surprises. :)
