Trip Report Expedition Pig Search, Whirlwind Sister Trip - Jan '17

Hey friends! We just got back from our sister trip on Sunday. I just now got my pictures on the computer, so it might take a few days to get them sorted out.

Figured I'd start the report while I am sitting here watching Hunted on CBS. Is anyone else watching it? A good friend of mine is one of the fugitives, and it's so surreal to see him on TV. But also the intense music they use on this show is making me anxious, so I need to do something while I watch. :joyfull:

Looking forward to sharing about all the fun we had!

I am enjoying your report. Sorry to hear about your dad. My sister and I went on a Disney trip after our father passed away. It was just what we needed. Hope you trip did the same for you. Boardwalk looks beautiful! I'd like to stay there some day. Looking forward to reading more.

I am sorry about your father's passing. It was super cool of you to take your sister to Disney World. I am sure she really appreciated it. She is definitely a talented artist. I hope she keeps it up.
I loved your shirts! Very original!
Thank you so much! We had the trip planned before he passed, but it was kind of nice to have that to look forward to for bit. I love how the shirts turned out too!

Yes it was good for us! I wish she was a little older so we could talk more, but just being together is fun. Thanks for following along!

You have got to be one of the best photographers on this website. Your photos are absolutely stunning.
You are too kind! :)

We headed back up to the room and changed out of our bathing suits. I didn't bother showering since we were just going back to a park anyway. I know...so gross. :hilarious:. I guess I didn't have to share that fact.

Sister was hungry, so we stopped for her to get her mickey pretzel, which she had been talking about. I tried to convince her to wait and get a pretzel in Germany, but she couldn't wait!

This cheesy grin was after I took two pictures of her looking bored...I had to keep begging her to smile. haha

We traded some pins with the guy at the margarita stand where we got the pretzel. He was really nice! He taught us a little more about trading and what to look for. While sister started eating her pretzel, I got some coffee at the Boardwalk Bakery. I also sent my husband a picture of the balcony of our room in the fall. I LOVED THAT ROOM!!!! So sad I don't live there:cry:

It was the balcony on top of the bakery, to the left.

The bakery accidentally charged me for two coffees, so I had to go get that sorted out and also get sister a water.

We were visited by some mooching birds.

We enjoyed our little break on the boardwalk. It was a beautiful early evening! I needed that coffee too o_O That 3:30 wakeup was getting to me.

Pretty soon we were headed to Epcot!

I don't know what my face is about. ha! Also, a quick note. Security was putting everyone through the metal detectors almost every time we entered a park. If that's the new norm, they have GOT to improve the system. It's such a cluster you-know-what. I get so flustered trying to take off my camera, lanyard, bag, etc and get it back on before they start trying to push me out of the way. At the airport, you can kind of grab your stuff and have a bench or something to gather yourself back together. If there was like a table or something where I could set my camera and stuff down while I got my backpack on, that would help. UGH, I don't know, it's just stressful. Seems like it could be so much smoother.

We made it!

Hello, Paris!

We walked through several of the pavilions. We didn't have a ton of time, but I was trying to get her interested. It didn't really work, but oh well

I LOVE Morocco's architecture.

Sister loved the big store in Japan, just like me :D

Model trains?! We must be in my favorite place!

My heart. :inlove::inlove::inlove:

Up Next: More epcot!

Sorry I went a little snap happy in the room :joyfull:

Actually, I'm glad you did. I don't see many TRs from the Boardwalk Inn, and it was interesting to see the guest room photos and view from your balcony. I like the closeup of the design on the drapes, too. The Boardwalk looks very nice inside.

I've read (in the past) that there really isn't any quick service in that hotel--that you have to go outside the hotel to the Boardwalk Bakery, for example, for morning coffee, etc. Is that still the case, or have they added anything inside the hotel now for quick service?

Yeah, I didn't see any indoor options for quick service :(. For me, that's not an issue, but I do get why it would be for some. I just make my coffee in the room and eat a breakfast bar, then the rest of my meals are usually at the parks. I also rarely get the refillable mugs. I don't drink soda enough to justify it.

The bar/ lounge area when we stayed 3 years back served bagels, pastries, and coffee/tea at breakfast time.

So we entered Karamell-Kuche and hopped in line. Sister was wanting something, and she ended up picking out a strawberry. After seeing that $5 price tag, she was saying it better be the best strawberry she ever had :p

UGHHHHHH I WANT SOME RIGHT NOW. If anyone ever wants to volunteer to mail me a bag, I would love you forever. I would pay a service fee! :hilarious:

She did end up loving the strawberry! I think she would have liked it better without the caramel, but I mean...it's a caramel shop. So.

The end of our FP time was approaching quickly, so we continued around World Showcase. It was a beautiful evening!

We arrived over at Test Track with plenty of time left and were met with a bunch of folks standing around the area. That can only mean one thing...

I was right, checked my email and I had a notification that my FP had to be changed, or whatever it is they say in those emails. So since TT was down, we headed to Soarin! I wasn't sure if sister would like it, but I figured we might as well. I love it, and I paid for the trip! haha

We got through the line pretty quickly and got concourse B. It didn't have quite the effect this time as the first time I saw it, but I still really enjoyed it. Sister was a little "meh" about it, which I figured she would be. At some point, probably in line for Soarin, I made another FP for Test Track. I guess it came back online quickly. When we got off Soarin, we were already good to go back over there.

Hahaha, her vehicle was crazy! It actually got 1st in two of the tests! We had a single rider with us who seemed about her age. He was really sweet and said he and his mom were just riding in single rider over and over. Guess it was his favorite!

She really enjoyed this ride! It was her favorite thing in Epcot, so I'm glad we were able to do it. While in line for it, I asked if she wanted to do one more ride in the park. I tried my best to describe Mission Space for her, and she said sure. She was really hungry, but I didn't want her to miss out on something she'd love! So I made us a FP and we headed over there after Test Track.

We went with orange, but somehow ended up in the green line. We had to remedy that, and I'm sure we got some eye rolls from the CMs :cautious: *sorry*

So we did Mission Space. I don't remember if sister liked it or not, but I can tell you, I will not be riding it again. It hurts! I was just praying that I didn't throw up, and thankfully I didn't. I hadn't eaten in a while, so that helped. Thankfully the discomfort from the G-force simulation didn't linger after the ride, and I was fine when we exited.

So now it was pushing 8pm and we were both super hungry. Sister loves Mexican food, so we went to La Cantina. I tried telling her 100 times that this place was NOTHING like the place she eats back home, Los Portales. All she really likes is white cheese. I thought they might have it, but alas all they had was yellow cheese. So I paid for full price nachos with only that crappy yellow cheese on it

And she didn't even like it. She ate like 1/4th of it. I will never get that $12 back :(...I should probably get used to this if I want to have kids, right? Parents, do you consistently feel like you're just ripping up dollar bills and letting them float away in the wind?

I got fish tacos and enjoyed them. I probably wouldn't go back here unless someone I was with wanted it, but it was fine. The atmosphere was nice in the dining area!

After we finished up, we started walking toward the International Gateway so we could be close to the exit after Illuminations. We found a decent spot by a light pole just past Canada and just stayed there. It wasn't a great view, but it was fine.

She got a little bored I think in the middle, but I was enjoying it. It's my favorite evening show, so I was glad to have seen it this trip! After the show, we headed out. The crowd wasn't that bad, so it didn't take us long.

We watched a couple of the acts on the boardwalk on the way back.

So as we were walking back to the room, I stopped at a little kiosk outside ESPN for a pin I'd seen earlier. The girl working there remembered us walking by before! I think she heard me that afternoon say that I wanted to come back for that pin, and she must have been surprised that I actually did. Anyway, she also had some traders, so we looked through them. She told us about several more places we should go around the Boardwalk, so we made note of that for the next day. We also went in the big store there to look around before going to the room.

I actually saw someone I know! One of my 2015 weddings had a bridesmaid who is a cast member, and she was working in that store. She is actually the groom's sister, so I see pictures of her on Facebook occasionally. If it wasn't for that, I probably wouldn't have recognized her. But I said hi and chatted with her for a minute. It was so crazy to actually run into her! She usually works at Bibbity Boppity Boutique, so I guess she just picked up an extra shift or something.

Ok, up next is Day 2! Can't believe how long day 1 was.

I'm enjoying your report and photos, as always! I'm glad you and your sister were able to enjoy time together!

My kid is an extremely picky eater. If she ever wants to try something new I always make sure it is something that I will be willing to eat if she doesn't like it. 9/10 times she doesn't like what ever it is. I blame her for any weight I gain. Haha

Those Illuminations pictures are AMAZING.

I feel ya on the bills in the wind on food. Thankfully, I only took that teen on one trip, her mother has to bear the cost in real life. :D

Thanks for the BW shots--we stayed there (the Inn side) before we joined DVC, in one of those garden view rooms! That was before the BW refurb, so the rooms didn't look like quite like that, but were still lovely. Probably one of my favorite stays ever.

Thanks for following along!

I told my niece that if she wanted to go ride Mission:Space that she would have to ride it alone. I was not going on that thing ever again.
In the past, I've been able to handle it, but this last time was brutal! Everest got me too. I'm getting old!

AHHHH I better brace myself if I decide to have one. haha :joyfull:

Oh good strategy! I really really hope if I have a kid, he or she will enjoy trying new foods like I do.

Haha, so true. Her mom is REALLY frugal, so she probably just says no to any spending. They like a lot of the same foods, so that works for them. Thanks for following along!

Day 2: Hollywood!

Forgot to include this from the first day. I love the carpet at Boardwalk Inn! I mean, I wouldn't want it in my house, but it's fun for a resort :joyfull:

Ok, so I showered the night before so that we didn't both have to shower the next morning. After that, I was in bed by 10:30. Not bad for Disney! I set my alarm for 7:30, which gave me PLENTY of sleep. I did briefly wake up at about 2:30am when the people in the room next to us were carrying on like they were at a bar or something. I had heard them when I went to bed too, but not as loud. The room was an adjoining room with theirs, so I guess the door lets in more sound. When they woke me up at 2:30, I was FURIOUS. Don't wake me up. Just don't do it. I had to fight my urge to either slip a note under the door (passive aggressive, my typical go-to) or bang on the wall and cuss at them (my you-woke-up irrational self). I decided to push that anger down and try sleeping with the pillow over my head. After about a half hour, I was able to go back to sleep. They were still cackling and carrying on like crazy over there. I just do not understand why people would do that in a hotel where they KNOW people are trying to sleep. Ooooooooooo I was mad. I'm still mad at them.

I got out of bed when my alarm went off, made my coffee and read my book on the balcony until about 7:45. I thought my sister would only take about 15 minutes to get ready. I was WRONG. She took a bath, and I think she fell asleep in there :cautious:. I had to push her along several times to hurry up, and we finally got out the door at 8:40.

We walked to Hollywood Studios, which takes about 20 minutes.

Goooooood morning! Our first FP was for a little later, so we headed straight for Toy Story first. I didn't make a FP for this since I knew sister would be more interested in Rock N Roller Coaster and they're on the same tier.

Those last two show a good comparison of the quality of my phone photos and the ones with my camera. My phone does fine, but I do like that I have more control with my camera :)

If you can't tell, we got to go on the new track!

Cute sign

I beat sister, and I maaaay have been a sore winner about it :joyfull:. She told me I was being mean. haha

After Toy Story, which I think sister enjoyed, we high-tailed it to Tower of Terror. She was pumped about this one!

Ran into some performers on the way, but we didn't stop.

We waited about 20 minutes. She loved it!!! We were in the back row, and you couldn't see us in the picture, but don't worry, we got a good one later.

After the ride, we headed back down Sunset Blvd in search of a snack.

This photopass photographer was great. He was doing something different with each group and was really nice. I do like when they take an extra minute to do something special! I understand that most of the time they just need to do the basics, but it's nice when you get one that makes it memorable.

I mentioned cupcakes and she perked up so we went to Starring Roles. The only one she could have was the Vader one because apparently there are tree nuts (she's allergic) IN the red velvet one and butterfinger one. I thought that was weird. They did say that all the cupcakes are made in the same place and would be contaminated with tree nuts. But she's not severely allergic, so as long as she's not literally eating the tree nut, she's fine. I am still not convinced there's any in the other two cupcakes, but whatever. She got the chocolate one and ended up complaining that it was too rich . Oh well, at least it was her money, not mine. It IS rich, but that's a good thing in my book.

A post-bite picture. She wasn't a fan of me trying to photograph her food.

After this our Rock and Roller Coaster FP was up! We arrived to a pretty long line. It had been down earlier when we rode Tower, so I bet all those FP people were in line too. It moved pretty quickly though. We probably only waited about 15 or 20 minutes.

After the ride, which sister LOVED, we traded with a cast member and with Rocker Stitch.

Up next: lunch

We didn't have any time to do anything before lunch, so I figured we may as well go ahead and check in. I think we were about a half hour early.

50's Prime Time! I was so excited. I'd heard such good things.

We waited less than 5 minutes for them to call us to our table. I got fussed at for not responding the first time they called. Oops! :joyfull:

I love the theming here. I like anything vintage, so I'd decorate my house just like this! Mid-century stuff is amazing, but I usually can't afford any of it. Plus it's harder to mix with other styles, and my house is a total hodge-podge.

So I decided on the chicken based on the recommendation of my friend at work who ate here last spring. Sister went with the meatloaf. I warned her that she better eat her vegetables! I also got us onion rings for an appetizer.

I see these glasses at antique stores all the time! They're so interesting.

She gets this disgusted look on her face when she's eating and it drives me BONKERS. Bless her. Love her to death, but I was so annoyed by that expression. I know...ridiculous. But that's what happens when you spend this much time with someone. Stupid stuff gets under your skin. Every time she'd look up at me I would mimic her sour face back at her :hilarious:

The chicken was so good!!! The mashed potatoes were also quite tasty. I was disappointed that corn was the seasonal "vegetable." Sorry, corn is not a vegetable.

I tried to sneak a picture of sister's food. Those green beans were awful, but she said the meatloaf was good. I was too full for dessert! I wanted a milkshake, but decided to save it for another trip.

The waiter told sister she had to eat one more bite.

:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: She thought it was hilarious. That made up for her disappointment that he didn't get onto her for having her elbows on the table. I shouldn't have told her they would do that....oops.

Overall it was a great lunch! I'd definitely like to come back when my husband is with me. I might have to beg though since the food is stuff we can eat here anytime. Hopefully he'll be up for it though!

So after lunch we made our way back to Hollywood Blvd and talked to a guy pin trading on the street until the Imperial March started.

When that was done, we headed to the Great Movie Ride. I didn't think sister would like it, but we were tired and it is relaxing.

Our guide was ADORABLE! She was so perky and had the hugest smile. I just wanted to put her in my pocket! Sister said she liked the ride ok but that it would have been better with real people. haha! I told her that would be pretty expensive, and I tried to explain how innovative that technology was when Walt Disney developed it. I guess it is kind of weird when you think about it...we just watch basically robots doing the same thing over and over on these rides. But it's awesome!

Up next: More DHS

We headed to our next FP reservation

I'm sitting here trying to remember which scenario we got...I cannot recall for the life of me! Sister thought it was fun, but definitely not a fav or anything. After this she really wanted to do Tower of Terror again. Our FP for that was for a little later, but the wait wasn't bad, so we decided we'd just wait standby. It was about 25 minutes.

Well, we got 2nd row this time. A little better! Still got our faces blocked though. By the time we were done we were within our FP window, so we hopped back in line again. It went by MUCH quicker this time, and guess what?! We got front row!

I can't believe I took my hands off the handles long enough to do this! I'm getting brave, you guys!

The lady next to sister was telling her kid she was going to disown her for making her go on this ride...she kept going on about it. I mean she was joking, but also, they were doing rider swap so clearly should could have just let the dad ride and sat it out. I kind of wanted to ask why she didn't just do that :joyfull:

Aaaanyway. We decided to head back to the resort and swim again! I made us another FP for Tower of Terror later that evening.

On the way out I spotted Donald and without hesitating I got in line! Sister wasn't into characters, but she was fine with this. She had a lot of fun meeting him and even took a selfie with him! It's ok...I'm not jealous. He knows I'm still his #1 fan!

BFFs :inlove::inlove::inlove:

Sister wanted to ride the dreaded Friendship Boat back :arghh:. I had talked her out of it that morning, but she didn't like the idea of walking all the way back on her tired feet so I gave in. Thankfully there was room to stand on the back, so we did that. The people on the seat scooted over enough for sister to have a seat, so that was really nice.

Another phone/camera comparison. WARNING: CAMERA TECH SPEAK COMING UP. I have a 35mm fixed lens on my camera most of the time, so I can't get wide shots. That's why I still use my phone a lot. My plan is to get an 18-135mm zoom for Disney and other travel. I struggle with those variable aperture lenses though, so I don't know how I'll like it. I need an 18-100ish 1.4 :hilarious:

CAMERA SPEAK OVER

We got off at the Swan/Dolphin to walk the rest of the way. It's beautiful over there!

Well we're out....might as well stop by Ample Hills!

Sister got cotton candy flavor :)depressed:) and I got coffee flavor on the bottom and dark chocolate on top. Our cones were crumbling so the lady gave us an extra cone to reinforce it. More calories! haha. It was sooooooo good. I seriously love this place so much.

After our very rich and delicious treat we got some waters at Boardwalk Bakery and headed up to the room.

Sister changed, but I decided not to swim, so I kept my same clothes on. I took my Kindle down so I could read.

Also, I forgot to mention this from day 1. Sister wears contacts, which is a fairly recent change. She's worn glasses for a while, but finally got some contacts which will be good for sports and stuff. She decided not to bring her glasses to Disney so she wouldn't lose them. On day 1 at the pool she was worried they'd fall out. She apparently can't swim without opening her eyes underwater. So bad for you! I sent her back to the room to take them out. I felt like she was old enough to go alone, and she was fine. She has a phone, so she could call if she got lost. So anyway, after all that, when we woke up on Friday I noticed one of her dang contacts was on the bathroom counter. Of course it was all dried out and completely ruined. I was so worried her mom would be mad, but it was all ok. Apparently she'd lost the other one at some point, so she had an extra one for that eye at home anyway. Whew!

Ok, sorry, long winded story out of the way. Just a little anecdote about teenage responsibility or lack thereof! I checked her contacts case every night after that :joyfull:

What type of camera do you have? I love your photos. (I'm not thinking I will magically be taking amazing photos just because I get the same camera as you :)). I'm curious as I don't like mine at all and am saving up for a new one.
