Everything @ WDW = Made in China?

The big problem with everything being made overseas and then being charged ten times the cost to produce is that many people are losing their good paying jobs and struggle to make ends meet. We live in an area where most of the major employers have closed down (steel mill, Ford Motor plants, Shell/Amoco/ Clark Oil refineries, Jefferson smurfit )and those people who would have gone on trips & spent money no longer do. Also the quality of much of this merchandise is crap. I tried to buy my husband 2 pairs of Levi's 560's 38x34. well, on every pair we measured the inseams were not 34, some were 33 or 35 or just completely off. Its not exclusive to Disney and it does make you wonder what our children will end up with.

I agree.

Well, I would agree as well, except:
1. Their markets are not as open to our products.
2. There should be more to our country's economy then just cost.
3. China is still growing it's nuclear arsenal and very, very large army...I wonder why and what they'll do with it?

I see China as an opportunity, not a threat.

I don't mind typical Disney items being "made in china"....that's just a fact of life. It's when you are walking around World Showcase, shopping in each countries stores, that you find items there all marked "made in china" (which is fine in the China pavilion, but not the norway one)

Just because a product is made in China does not make that product Chinese. U.S. companies make many products in China.

The items are still Norwegian they are just made in China. All that means is that companies in Norway have turned to China just like those in the US.

I remember the days when "Made in Japan" made people think that the product was junk. Now, all the best cars are made by Japanese companies. I own a Honda.

I found it slightly insulting that not 1 gift I could find in the American Adventure's gift shop was made in the USA. People come a long way to get here and the least you could do is make the American stuff in America and outsource the rest. Would it be that hard to find a place here to make an American flag, or some stickers? The rest of the stuff at other shops doesn't bother me. Feel free to buy cheap stuff to resell, but if you're trying to sell America to people from around the world, don't make it in China.

I think that you should find it exhilarating to know that the U.S. is clever enough to outsource kitsch.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good deal and making money and sure it's a great idea from a profit standpoint to buy cheap crap from overseas. The issue I have is the whole attraction is all about how great america is, and how great it's people are, not that the Chinese make a cheap shirt. Don't get me wrong, the Chinese people are damn good at making cheap shirts, but I think that should be the 1 place on property where American's make the items for sale. Take a slight profit hit (they still will make money) for the sense of pride that comes with knowing that it really is all about America. I'm hardly a patriot, don't get me started about how bad some things are in this country, but I really hate hypocrisy more than most anything else and that store reeks of it.

Actually, I believe the line was "Japan", and not "Taiwan". (And to be more specific, the line was from BTTF III.) :D

I wonder how many products in China have MADE IN USA on bottom?? I feel China is slowly smothering the world economy in cheap labor and products. What have you bought from China that has actually lasted??? Even Chinese food dosen't last long after you eat it!:animwink:

I just worry how long the U.S. can last with all of the jobs going overseas? What do we really make here in the good ol' USA anymore? I feel we need to tighten up our trade policies. But thats just my opinion.

If these items were made in the USA Disney would either have to deal with lower profits on these items, which they would not. Or they would charge even more per item and you would not be willing to pay even more for these items.

FYI the 12.95 Plush costs about 1 dollar to make.

I ended up not buying a single thing while @ WDW except for food, at least I knew it'd been made on site, which I'd much rather spend my money on than something shipped over from china.

Surprise....most products sold in AMERICA are made overseas. I may be wrong, but I think this started before 2005.

I'm pretty sure the DVD's are still made in America...so you don't go home empty handed.

...and if not an opportunity, at very least, a reality that has to be acknowledged.

Don't worry though...the majority of the food sold in the China restaurants is grown either here or in other countries outside of China...so we're even.

Yes, it would. Last July 4th, a publication (sadly, I can't remember who... Newsweek?) did a report trying to find a US flag made in the US. They couldn't find one. The economics says it's not worth it. Would you open a company to make flags hoping people would pay a premium just for "Made in America"? Hint: wouldn't be long before your company went belly-up, or you started outsourcing (aka importing) your flags...

Google, 20 seconds of searching...
http://www.atlasflags.com/
http://www.humphrysflags.com/
http://www.hanoverflags.com/aboutUs.asp

Never trust an article which has an agenda. How hard did they REALLY look? This took me 20 seconds to get a search page up with a ton of flag manufacturers here, and another 10 seconds each to see where they were made. Just beacause they "couldn't" find something doesnt mean they aren't around, it means they didn't want to find it because it is not what the aim of their story is.

Back to the original point, even if your cost on an item doubles (meaning $1 extra) charge $1 extra for it, but put up big banners around the store saying "products PROUDLY made in the USA!" and I think you may even see a sales increase from patriotic Americans who would gladly pay a token ammount extra to know that they bought a real american flag, or a real american shirt. I am always willing to pay a little extra for guaranteed quality, and I'm a cheap SOB, so if I'd do it then a family on vaction who is already spending 10s of thousands of dollars would probably do it too.
