I got tired of walking around the gift shops, and noticing that nearly everything was made in china. Anybody know if it's been like this for a long time? Wonder if it would have been cool with Walt...
I ended up not buying a single thing while @ WDW except for food, at least I knew it'd been made on site, which I'd much rather spend my money on than something shipped over from china.

Yes, but most tourists already spending a fortune on going to Disney World would be more angry at how souvenirs cost even more.

Yeah. I believe that 70% of all things sold at Walmart are from China.
And the rest are made in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and Hong Kong. Its something you just have to get used to.

Actually, for quite a while Hong Kong was independent for China, and I believe it was technically part of the British Empire. Only recently has it been annexed into China.

Most Disney food is not made on site.

I had a friend from Japan some years back and she told me a funny story. She visited Disneyland and was very excited to buy some souveniers. When she got home, she realized they said "Made in Japan" on them and was a little dissapointed, then she got a chuckle out of it!

My folks had recently brought over a small yellow Disney photo album (with the older style WDW logo) that I am guessing goes back to the early 90s and I was surprised to see that it was made in China.

Its nothing new, not in nor outisde Disney.

I am well aware of Hong Kongs political situation. It doesn't change the fact that many items say made in Hong Kong instead of made in China.

During the last holiday season, I bought the "Happy New Year 2006" Mickey Ears hat at World of Disney store in Downtown Disney. It was made by a company called Jacobson Hat, and it was "Made in the USA".

Well, that depends on what food he is reffering to.
True. They obviously make fish and various fruits and vegetables in The Land. However, that's a very small portion of the food served at WDW. Most other food comes from a variety of sources depending upon prices and availability. Most shrimp (for example) come from outside the U.S. due to its cheap price.

Fruit and vegetables are seasonal in nature therefore, South American sources are used during North American winter. Food is a global market.

Exactly. Most food at WDW has to come from somewhere. And that somewhere is not always located in the USA. Although I think the OP was more reffering to the food being cooked/prepared on site (most of it anyway) rather than actually grown, raised, or produced on site.

I hear you, but it is impossible to escape even in your home town.
Because nothing but national chain stores exist, BedBath&Beyond, WalMart, Target, everything comes from China.

Selling ourselves short and thinking we're getting rich...ah now that's the new American way.

Yes Peter, I too know what he meant. It's just that I, as a citizen of the U.S.A., have grown rather tired of China bashing. China is the biggest new economy in the world and all major companies have a prominent role there, including Disney. That's a good thing! The more trade we have with China, the better.

I remember the days when "Made in Japan" made people think that the product was junk. Now, all the best cars are made by Japanese companies. I own a Honda.
