Trip Report Everything is So Contemporary (Fall Anniversary Trip)

EDITED 07.07.17 - Photobucket has updated their policies so my photos aren't displaying. I'll try to switch them all over to Flickr eventually!

Pre-trip report here

Who: Me and my husband
When: Sept 28-Oct 2
Why: Our third anniversary (Oct 6, we celebrated early)
Where: Bay Lake Towers, rented points

Hey y'all! We've been home less than 24 hours, but I want to get a roll on this report before I forget everything. I have the world's worst memory, so I'm doing this partially to be able to look back at it for myself and recall my experiences. But I'm also doing this for all the other Disney fans like me who love reading trip reports :D

Day 1: Road trip!

We got up early Sunday to head out. I think my goal was to leave the house between 7 and 8, and we got out around 7:40. Not bad! Sadly, we had to drop our best buddy off at his new home for the week. He loves it there because he has a little pup friend, but we miss him so much.

We finally tore ourselves away from him at about 8:30, and off we went! We had about a 12 hour drive, and it seemed like we stopped about every 2 hours for either food, bathroom or gas. We never stop for more than about 5 minutes, so it doesn't add much, but it helps us not go crazy.

The scenery between our home in West Tennessee and the Georgia line is lovely, so that kept me entertained. Unfortunately, beyond that, it gets quite boring. I spent a lot of time reading a political satire, Boomsday by Christopher Buckley, which I finished on the trip. It was good!

It ain't a road trip without a little fast food! Gas station coffee (Pilot, especially) and fast food are two reasons I love road trips. And beef jerky. And sour gummy worms. And those 79 cent huge sodas!

DisneyFall2015Camera_015_zpsksoef4c8.jpg

I was sooooo looking forward to the orange juice at the welcome center! It was closed by the time we got there, and I was bummed. It's fine though because I don't even like orange juice. I'm just a sheep who doesn't want to miss out :p

I don't know if you can tell from that picture, but I realized about halfway down that I was having an allergic reaction. My face was getting swollen and bumpy and burned a little. I've had a few issues with beauty products, so I wasn't entirely surprised. I had just bought the Aveeno CC cream to use under my powder, and I guess something in it is an allergen for me. Not the best way to start a vacation, but I figured as long as I didn't use it again, I'd be alright. Glad my husband loves me no matter how bumpy my face is! ha :inlove:

The drive was smooth (unlike my face). We got a SunPass, so we cruised through the tolls with no cares. I think it ended up deducting about $4 on the drive down, and then $3 on the way back. We got in around 10 (we lost an hour going from Central to Eastern) and checked in at a Fairfield Inn and Suites for the night. It was close to WDW and a really nice place! The decor was great, it was quiet, and the staff was friendly.

We didn't waste much time getting to sleep because we had an early day!

Up next: Brews, Breakfast and MUCH more

@Tuvalu , those are great pictures!!! The kitchen one, in particular, I really enjoy. Mary's artwork of children had this endearing quality to it. Her scenes of children from all countries, all happy and getting along with one another, provide this idyllic escape from the harsher realities of life. There's just something about her style that is so enjoyable, and peaceful, at the same time. Thanks for sharing those with us.

Very nice vacation pictures you shared. :)

Just wanted to mention that I am also a Mary Blair fan! What a pleasant surprise to see her photo on the wall. I'm always awestruck when I see her 90-foot high, "Mosaic" tile masterpiece in the Grand Concourse Lobby, at the Contemporary. As you probably know, she completed that mural in 1971, in time for the opening of the hotel at WDW. I also enjoy her influence on Small World and various other Disney (and Disneyland--I've only seen in pictures) attractions.
I love love love that mural. I could walk around and look at the details all day. I wish I could remember the one in Tomorrowland back in the day, well the one that was still there when I was born. I want to look back at pictures from my childhood to see if I can find it. It's funny, I don't like IASW very much, but just because of the song. I love the visuals, especially the facade at Disneyland. So classic.

I just read your report all the way through and loved it! Your photos are great (although I blame those food shots for my 'second breakfast' this AM), your commentary is hilarious (I am still rolling over the 'punching that boat in its triangle nose' comment), and you even had some truly Disney moments to top it all off! It sounds like you both had an amazing, and so very contemporary, anniversary trip! ;)

Aww thank you so much for following along and for your compliments! I need to get my last post done this weekend before I forget everything. ha! I think writing stuff down (or typing in this case) helps me retain memories. Also, I still feel traumatized by that boat ride. I will never be able to ride a friendship boat again!

Day 5 (continued): Hanging at the Hangar

We were originally going to head back to Epcot this day to chip away at our goal of eating at each kiosk, but I decided I really wanted to check out Disney Springs, or at least a little of it. My main goal was getting some art while I was there. I secretly hoped I would find a retro Disney art section and get a Mary Blair print, but that's never going to happen it seems.

We stopped in a couple of stores and I was really having to clench my fists to not grab everything! I could have spend hundreds. I am the opposite of a hoarder though, so every time I wanted to get something I just reminded myself we don't have anywhere to put things. One thing we do have is walls. Lots of walls! :D So I found some art! I debated between the Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion prints from Dave Perillo. He was going to be signing the next day, but it's such a process to get over there, we didn't go back

I ended up choosing Haunted Mansion (who are we kidding, there was no contest). I'd love to have the other two someday, but for now I'm trying to decide on a frame and location for the one I got. I ended up getting another pack of attraction posters on our last day, so I've got a TON of Disney stuff to get on the walls now! I may take some of the posters to my office. Everyone there knows of my Disney obsession :D

I wanted one of all of these dishes. When I finally get my kitchen renovated, I may add some shelves on one wall for things like this in the future. They're just so adorable!

We were so hot and so tired walking around. It wasn't crowded at all, especially to be so close to lunch time. We rounded the corner to see the beautiful Boathouse restaurant, which is on my to-eat list for the future. Then we kept going and saw that Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar was open and mighty inviting if I do say so myself.

DisneyFall2015Camera_585_zps1rzsnmfm.jpg

It took a few minutes to understand what was going on with the menu, but once I got it, I was impressed. The first part is like a captain's log where Jock Lindsey tells his favorite drinks from his adventures. They have all the stuff actually listed at the back too. I love the theming so much! We sat outside by the water, so next time I want to sit inside to get that full experience.

DisneyFall2015Camera_590_zpslz708cto.jpg

The husband surprised me and ordered a Hovito Mojito (Barson Quebranta Pisco, fresh Lime Juice, Mint, and Simple Syrup topped with Soda Water). I was sticking with my normal drink order: a beer. They had a grapefruit hefe on the menu, and I ordered that. I was PUMPED about it. Alas, our server came over and told me they were out, and she recommended the Paulaner since I'm a wheat beer fan. I usually prefer draft beer anyway, so it was fine.

DisneyFall2015Camera_591_zpsjpkiizrm.jpg

This is probably a weird thing to say, but isn't that a gorgeous beer?! Such a pretty color. It was a perfect refreshment on such a hot day by the water.

DisneyFall2015Camera_592_zpsnzxd0lta.jpg

We ordered the Lao Che's Revenge, which is "Spicy Asian Sticky Wings direct from Club Obi Wan." They were delicious! I always enjoy a honey bbq sauce on my wings, so this was right up my alley. My husband acted like he wasn't hungry before they came out, but he ate just as much as I did. Mmmmm I want to go back for these right now.

DisneyFall2015Camera_600_zps6fhas8ys.jpg

We loved watching the boats on the water. This was one of those afternoons where we truly felt like we were on vacation. We just go-go-go on Disney trips, so I cherish these quiet moments.

Ok, this entry was pretty short, but I probably need to do the Halloween party as one post, so that will be next!

Up Next: Boo to You and You and You
You are so right about the gorgeous looking beer and I don't even like beer.

Enjoying your TR. My sister and I have an ADR at California Grill during our trip in February. It looks so beautiful and the food looks amazing. I can't wait. How wonderful of that couple to give their extra dining credits to you! Great TR!

One Last Glance

You may recall day two when we attempted go see the MK opening show and just ended up getting soaked and miserable. Well, we still hadn't seen it, so my plan for this last morning was to stroll over to see the opening and then stroll back and hit the road. Our drive is about 12 hours, and we really wanted to get home in time to pick up our dog, Chipper.

My husband didn't care about it, so he let me go on and he stayed in the room to pack and load the car.

DisneyFall2015Phone_221_zpsl9g6qabm.jpg

It was so wonderful! I had to move as soon as it started because the guy in front of me put his kid on his shoulders. Really, dude? This show is up on a hill, your kid can see it just fine from the ground! Besides that annoyance, I loved it. What a perfect way to start a day. I wished I was one of the many who were actually going to be spending the day there.

I lingered in front of the station and then decided I had to go in just for a few minutes.

DisneyFall2015Phone_227_zpsksebgjb3.jpg

I hopped on the Carousel for one last ride at MK. I actually did walk through to Tomorrowland just to see Space Mountain, and I almost got on, but my husband had already texted me to see how it was going. I knew that was code for "hurry up." I took my time heading back down Main St., and even stopped at the station again to look down Main St. for a few more minutes. As I was heading out, I was seriously having to fight back tears. I'm sure if anyone saw my face, they thought someone died. It's just so hard to say goodbye when you know it'll be a while before you're back! Luckily "a while" is shorter this time than usual. I'll be back with my friends in January.

So with that, I walked back to Bay Lake, loaded the last of our things into the truck and off we went. Bye, World! We made good time, especially after mid afternoon. We were so ready to be home, I think we drove the last 5 hours without stopping. We got to our pet-sitter's house and picked up our baby. He went NUTS, which of course made us feel super loved.

Final thoughts:
  • Bay Lake Tower: This resort was perfectly nice, but it scores a 0 on theming. Doesn't feel like you're at Disney at all until you look out toward the castle. I think they relied on proximity to MK too much and just didn't theme it. It just feels like any other condo you might stay in. A couple of bummers were that the pool was insanely loud from our room, so afternoon naps were pretty hard. There were also some weird pipe noises going on above the bed, and it was all through the day and night. So strange! So, the resort was ok, but I don't know if I'll stay there again unless I REALLY want to walk to MK.
  • I mentioned at the beginning of this report that I was trying to open myself up to interacting with other people and sharing the experience with more than just my husband. I don't normally interact with strangers, so this was out of my comfort zone, but I think it really went well. I had some great conversations with people during the trip, both guests and cast members. It also somehow kept me more cheerful, instead of me constantly being annoyed with everyone around me. I think I also had my crowd expectations in check this time. I knew it would be busy!
I thought I had more thoughts...but I don't :D. If I think of more later, I might add on!

In the meantime, thanks to all of you who followed along and commented. I enjoyed putting this together, and I'm already looking forward to documenting my January trip with girlfriends!

I can imagine just how you felt walking down Main Street one last time on your trip...our trip this past November I was in tears, I mean really balling, as I looked back at the castle from the train station. Knowing I wouldn't be back for a long time (since my daughters are older and can't miss school now), was hard to say goodbye. But I was also smiling too because I did have the chance to be in such a magical place with my family and we made such wonderful memories.
Thank you for sharing your memories with us and I look foward to your trip report in January!

Just caught up on your report and I really enjoyed it! Its always been a dream of mine to stay at the Contemporary but I appreciate your commentary on the lack of theming....it makes me really think about some other places I enjoy staying and how half the reason I like them it for the theme!
I really like the new Muppets show too but I know there are a lot of haters. Last weeks karaoke episode was so funny! I hope they keep the 3D show around ...it could use an update though!

I was in Bay Lake Tower, so it's a bit different! You should definitely still try out the Contemporary someday. I think being in the actual resort (as opposed to the DVC addition) would be different, and probably better. I still want to stay in the main Contemporary building....you know, if I win the lottery or something. :hilarious: I would love to see the Muppets show stick around too. I wouldn't mind it changing, or even being switched out for a completely different Muppet attraction. As long as it has the Kermit flail :)

Thanks for reading!

Great TR! I'm actually a huge fan of BLT - not only due to proximity to MK, but I love the decor because it's so contemporary. :D And I also love the lobby smell, reminds me of a spa!

When will you be there in January? (If you mentioned it earlier in your TR, apologies for forgetting.) I just booked a solo trip for Jan 24-31, staying at Saratoga - woohoo!! :joyfull:

Thanks for reading! I can definitely see the decor appealing to some. I would love it for my house, I just like the more elaborate themes when I stay at Disney. French Quarter is still my absolute favorite :)

We're going to be there the 14-17, so it'll be a short trip! I'm already considering another trip down in mid Oct next year though. haha! I'm addicted!

Loved your report. I am always the one bawling my eyes out as we leave MK so I know exactly how you feel. I was extra sad on our last visit because at the time I had no idea when we'd be heading back to Disney. Looking forward to reading about your January trip!
