Ever use Facetime or Skype video while riding a ride.

My wife and I are leaving a couple days for a much needed WDW get away and we're leaving the kids with their grandparents. My kids aren't sad, as they love being with my folks and have a great time, but my son did ask if we could video chat while on Splash Mountain. Shouldn't be a problem, but just wondering if anyone has done it before. My wife has an iphone 4 and I have a verizon LTE phone with a mobile hotspot so we should be all set. Personally I think it should be pretty cool for him to be able to see us and the ride as we're going down it. Anyone else ever do something like this?

I am sure you can do it. It should not be difficult. I will do it in September if VZW could get a phone that was worth having by then.

Aw sounds like maybe he would rather be with you on Splash Mountain than at the folks.

Just make sure you have a case/holder that you can get a good grip on.

Also, unless your phone is jailbroken, you cannot use FaceTime over 3G yet (its coming with iOS 5, but its up to carriers on whether to support it or not). Skype should work, though, provided you have a good signal.

He said he has a mobile hot spot on his phone, so he will connect on wifi from the iPhone. I'm sure it will work but the quality as your going down the mountain will suffer.

Is there wifi in the park ? :p

Yes. Is it unsecured or usable by guests? No.

Ah you're right, I misread that he has two phones in the equation. I doubt Verizon has built LTE out over WDW property yet, so he'd still be looking at trying to do it over 3G... I'm sure it will be stuttery.

Yep, my phone is 4G LTE which when I was at WDW in May was giving me download speeds of 26MB/s and 8-10MB/s upload which is faster than the comcast cable internet I have at home. If I only had 3G I wouldn't bother, but Verizon's service at Disney is pretty darn good, and LTE seems to penetrate building deeper than their 3G CDMA. Should be an interesting experience at any rate. My wife will connect her phone to mine via wifi hotspot and we should be all set. Another idea I had was to let my 3 y/o daughter facetime with a princess which I don't think would be a problem if we got in line and waited for the meet and greet.

Who wouldn't?!!?
Don't feel bad for him though, we live in Michigan and he still get to go to WDW 3-4x per year. We'll be back for Halloween and Christmas, so he won't have long to wait.

Would be if I was having a full blown conversation, but using it primarily as a streaming video camera I don't really see a problem.
My mistake. Just try not to let the LCD screen distract other guests. Not a dig, just something I get aware of when videotaping.
