Epcot - Japan Pearl

Anyone do this when they go to Epcot?

Such a good show for each and every guest that buys an oyster. Fun to watch and see what kind of pearl they get.

We did one back in 2009, and got a basic white 7mm.

On our last visit back in June, my wife asked me to pick the oyster. So I carefully looked around seeing one that had what looked like a duck silhouette on it, I said "that one!".

Lucky for her, it was an 8mm Silver pearl! Beautiful, and we did have it set for a modest price since it was a nicer find.

We even got to watch another person lucky enough to get TWINS in one oyster! two 6mm silver pearls.

Its a good time.

I don't think I've ever done this! How exactly does it work?

It's in one of the gift shops. There is a horseshoe shaped tank of water with oysters in it. You pay $10 (i think it was) for a number, get in line. When they call your number, you pick your oyster.

They pick it up, do a "dog and pony show" with drums, and tons of enthusiasm while they open your oyster right in front of you.

More enthusiasm once its opened, lots of smiles, and congratulations. And of course, they would like you to 'buy-up' into a setting, but you can just take your pearl and leave with no setting if you wish.

I'm not sure there is any limit, I've seen many folks buy two numbers, for two separate oysters once its there turn.

Found this video, good example of how it goes :)

Thanks! Next time I go to Epcot, I'll make sure to check it out. Japan is one of my favorite World Showcase stores, after all!

I love doing this when we visit Japan! The first time, I found a white pearl and this summer, I found a silver one! It's a great memory and keepsake! You can simply take the pearl with you, have it set in many different jewelry choices of various price ranges, or put in in a small bottle with sand.

I have watched, never actually bought though. Very fun to watch and those ladies are always so happy. I think they can put a smile on anyone's face.

I did this in January and got a 6.75 mm silvery grey pearl. Picking the pearl cost $17, and I also added a setting to make it into a necklace, which cost about $30. I didn't buy a chain there because they were all $100+...still actually need to get a chain now that I think about it. It was fun!

ETA: Originally I wanted to purchase a cage necklace like this one for the pearl, but when I saw it in person in the giftshop I was scared off by how big it was. I may change my mind at some point and grab it though.

My daughter loves doing this. She has a number of nice pearls from there. Some just in the bottle, others are in a setting.

Sometime the act that they put on is a little bit over the top, but it is all in good fun.

I did it in June for my wife and daughter and they loved it. Was really fun and can get crowded. They both got 7mm and 7.5 mm pearls, very nice and fun.

We did it last year (June 2013). My DD did the 1st one. She got a 7.5mm grey or silver pearl which she setup on a necklace. They did such a great presentation my DS wanted to try it too. He got a 7.5mm white pearl. He just kept the pearl in the little glass container. It was an enjoyable activity but make sure you leave some time to do it.

I love doing this. So much fun and a souvenir that I can actually use! I bought the carriage on ebay in advance as I knew I was getting a pearl. Had it with me to put the pearl in right away. I get tons of compliments on it.

I think it is cool how they do it with the whole presentation and drums. Always a must do for my sister. She got "twin pearls" once which is two little pearls in one oyster. Very cool experience!

My daughter did this last summer for her 6th birthday and loved it. She keeps asking if she can do it again. We may have to make a tradition out of it.

I finally decided to do it on my last trip (Sept 13') just for fun! I only bought the pearl I did not have it set because I am hoping to get a matching pearl the next time and maybe make a pair of earrings for my mother who happens to love them!
