Epcot cancelled illuminations tonight

Wow- for the first time in my visiting, they had to cancel illuminations which had been delayed 25 minutes. They said there was a problem with the sound system. That surprised me. No worries though because just being here is perfect!!

I was there that night as well, it was our last night and we were hoping to finish our trip with a bang but it didn't happen. We still had a great night and vacation.

We'd have to know the details to know what the lost union track would affect. We have a show on Discovery here in Canada called Pyros that gives behind the scene views of firework shows. In some shows the audio tracks carry firing cues. They have had shows stopped because the audio track was not sending the cues correctly to the various firing panel boxes. Equipment sometime fails and the Pyros won't run a show if even small things compromise safety even slightly. It may have been something like that rather than just not getting audio to the speakers. Only the details would let us know for sure.

That show does give a decent look at how a small pyro company operates and fires shows. However, don't mention that show and the word safety unless you're going to say that safety is completely disregarded. I don't know if it's a Canadian thing or TV thing but certain things on that show are completely unsafe and irresponsible for a company to do.

Wasn't the show cancelled at least once in the last 5-6 years due to a tropical storm or a hurricane? I seem to recall there being no show due to the incredibly high winds. (?) I remember in 2010 when I was there, there was a huge lightning storm that moved into the area, it looked like the bolts were literally coming down in WS. The (pouring) rain hit just at the intro narration and most people ran for cover. The show started as usual, but I remember that the wind was pretty intensified by that point and (not the yellow comets) but the red sparks that fall during the seond part of 'Chaos', after the inferno barge re-ignites, were falling into WS plaza. After 'Chaos' there was no pyro for the rest of the show except for what they release from the globe at the end, but the music still played and the globe still showed the video.

Talked to my friends who worked in that dept and nobody knows for sure what happened to the audio, but a lot of guesses and nobody knows why the backup audio didn't play also or at least they aren't telling me. Probably some power problems because they did some shunt trip testing, but tonight is the rescheduled parkwide power outage so if someone is in the park tomorrow there maybe some other unforeseen problems.
