Epcot, and It's Cluttered Walkways

The first time I ever went to epcot was in 1995, when I was about ten years old. I don't remember a whole lot, it's pretty fuzy. Since then I've been to epcot many, many times. I've even worked there. I never put any thought into future worlds walkways, until I saw a video on Martins website called "Future World 1990 Walkaround." Mainly right at 1:55, the footage from the monorail going around future world. I suggest any epcot fans watch it. While watching it, I couldn't help but notice how open, and bare they walkways are!! (not to mention there's only a handful of people in the park.) Man, compared to then, it seems really crowded now with carts, stands, DVC, merchandise, food etc. I don't mind the way it is today, but it looks like Epcot probably had a completely different feel to it back then, even just walking around future world. How does everyone else feel? Especially the veterans that have been way back then. I know it's silly, but does anyone think it'll ever get cleaned up, and go back to it's former "self"

I know what you mean. Innoventions had a nice clean look until 2000, now it looks like a rainbow threw up. Future world used to be clean and simple but now it is all scattered.

I agree, DVC Booths, Play Fountains, Umbrellas, and to some extent, the John Hench Purple Food Carts clutter up the place. If they were to do away with a FEW of them, it would really make all the difference in he World.

It did. Back when EPCOT Center opened, "Future" World meant open, relaxed, and clean (as in "uncluttered"). It was Disney's National Mall surrounded by museums. Now the "future" means pinwheels, whirlygigs, cartoon fish, etc. It's a short-sighted capitulation to 4 year olds.

Interestingly, they both got War Memorials - one classy, one a cash grab.

I don't remember any war memorials in Epcot.

I certainly wouldn't think that you would be tasteless enough to compare anything in Epcot to the sacrifice that millions of Americans made in World War II and their long overdue memorial in Washington.

Well, then you'd think incorrectly, because that's exactly what I'm doing. The Leave a Legacy tombstones look like an ugly, out of place version of the Vietnam War Memorial. I will leave it to others to decide whether this comparison is "tasteless" or not; it doesn't make it any less accurate.

For the record, I think the WWII Memorial is an excellent addition to Washington DC, both because it was overdue and because it fits in perfectly with the surrounding aesthetics.

It is nice to see that disrespect and hyperbole won't stand in the way of a good Epcot comparision.

When you start to compare theme parks to places that commemorate fallen soliders you have either no perspective on history or an inflated importance of what Epcot is.

There are somethings that just simply shouldn't be compared because they have no fathomable relationship to each other besides visual athetics.

And for the record you didn't link the Vietnam Memorial in your first post you linked the WWII memorial, so you weren't envoking athetics, you were envoking purpose.

Nope, I'm fairly certain I was envoking both aesthetics and purpose in my original comparison. I know this because I am one of the foremost authorities on my own opinion.

I linked to the WWII Memorial, as opposed to the Vietnam Memorial, because it is the most recent addition to the National Mall, was built around the same time as Leave a Legacy (within 5 years of each other) and because it caused controversy (both appearance and location) when it was built.

Thank you for reinforcing my statement.

The only thing you have envoked here is your ability to link Wikipedia.

I hate to break it to you, but the thread is about Epcot's visual aesthetics ... specifically, the changes that make it's walkways appear cluttered. It's right in the title: Epcot, and It's Cluttered Walkways.

Just because it is in the title doesn't make the comparision any less disrespectful.

As someone who has stood at both the WWII memorial and the Epcot entrance I can assure you, your comparision is tasteless. One envokes emotions of gratefulness and sorrow. The other is an obstacle to getting a Fastpass.

And the statement that they share significant aesthetic elements is an accurate one.

Maybe it would be better to suggest they share certain design elements, and not aesthetic ones? That way the philosophical meanings for each won't be compared to one another. Just a suggestion....

UGGGGGH DVC BOOTHS! If I see another one POP UP Im going to kick it over! and they always put it next to a bench so you have to hear them yammer on about how great DVC is when you just want to rest a minute...oh! and of course! Do I know the best kept Disney secret?? I once told a DVC CM that I thought the best kept Disney secret was ANY bench NOT next to a DVC booth....I actually felt bad about that, i went back a half hour later to apologize. :( Its wasn't her fault, she has a job to do. *sigh*

The DVC kiosk between the (African) Refreshment Outpost and Germany has been removed. That seemed out of place anyways.
