"Encanto" Coming Fall 2021

Since we're making lists -

Current - WDAS/Pixar movies I love:

Zootopia. Absolutely superb. The kind of film WDAS should make more of. Talking animals is - or WAS - Disney's specialty. It should make more films with animals as leads. Disney's animals beat the heck out of any other studio's, especially the fugly critters in Ice Age and the new "Bad Guys" flick (that looks frankly terrible).

Big Hero Six - A Marvel creation adapted by Disney in the grand old style - characters altered for the better, stronger storyline, emotional punch. I bought it and still watch it every now and then.

Wreck-It-Ralph - Lots of fun. Although Sarah Silverman's voice was annoying.

Treasure Plant - an absolutely beautiful 2D movie. I loved that Disney turned Long John Silver into a cyborg, and the relationship between him and Jim Hawkins was poignant and moving. The feline captain and Dr. Doppler had the benefit of great voice actors. Cool character designs overall. It's a shame the movie failed. I'd love to see the crew in a new adventure, but that won't happen. (Yeah, this movie is old, but I couldn't resist tossing in here).

Movies I like:

Moana. There was something missing in the storyline that kept this from being an "I love" film. Can't put my finger on it. But it's a lovely film with good songs.

Movies I dislike:

Brave - what a singularly unlikable film, with an equally unlikable heroine who looks like a Cabbage Patch Doll. Add to that a stupid bare butt shot, and a storyline ripped from Brother Bear. Feh.

And yeah, Brother Bear. Great animation, but a shaky story that didn't make a lot of sense.

Toy Story 4 - did not like the ending. At all. And I HATED Forky.

Movies I didn't bother with:

Luca, Coco, Encanto, Seeing Red. The trailers did nothing for me. The lead in Encanto also has this supposed-to-be-endearing nervous, smirky grin that gets on my nerves whenever I see it. Ugh.

EDITED TO ADD: I can't believe I left Inside Out of my Love list. What a great film! Clever, imaginative, and I cried TWICE while watching it. (You guys who have also seen it know what parts broke my heart, and yours as well, I bet...)

The Idina Menzel "Let It Go" was absolutely pushed on traditional radio.

Bruno was entirely an accident. The featured song from Encanto was supposed to be "Dos Oruguitas."
If you say so, but I never heard it and I'm in one of the top 4 radio markets in the US. I only ever heard the Demi version, and that was for all of a couple weeks. Even the article I provided from 2014 showed that traditional radio pretty much ignored Frozen.

As for Bruno being an accident, I won't say that is the right word. I would say that Disney anticipated the public's interest incorrectly when they pushed Dos Oruguitas as their award contender instead of Bruno. What they did was take a gamble and only submitted one song from Encanto, that being Dos Oruguitas, instead of several which they should have done.

Okay no, not this. You have homework.

Go watch Coco, it’s a beautiful touching film.

Some time ago, I did see a clip of the big "twist" in Coco. Wow. Dark. But what can you expect from a movie about Dead People Skeleton Land? (Chapek, don't you dare get any ideas).

I dislike the whole Day of the Dead motif, so no Coco for me.

I agree. Zootopia's the only talking animal animated film from Disney we've had since 2011. Movies starring human after human with non-talking animals acting like dogs gets tiring. Variety is a good thing.

For what it's worth, I think the commentary track by Rutt and Tuke on the DVD is even better than the movie itself.

I personally liked Luca myself. The others, I have not seen.

Current-gen WDAS movies, ranked (by me):

Movies I love:
Moana
Tangled

Movies I like:
Encanto
Wreck-It Ralph
Raya

Movies I do not like:
Zootopia
Ralph 2

Movies I hate:
Frozen 2
Frozen
Big Hero 6
I will give you Frozen 2 (horrible writing, weak ending, wasn't really necessary) but why the hate on Frozen or Big Hero 6? Just curious...I'd put Wreck it Ralph 2 in the bottom, personally.

How interesting! I wonder how they will work that into the show considering the song isn't nominated? Does this mean two songs from Encanto will be performed, as I assume they'll also have Sebastián Yatra there singing Dos Oruguitas?
Probably that.

They're just cashing in on the craze to draw eyeballs to the show. Everyone knows (in hindsight) that that should've been the nominated song.
