Electronic devices on rides :(

Your right about the OP didn't just refer to rides and I'm not going to be a hypocrite I tended to agree with him but, again my opinion. And I know about opinions , they are like armpits we all gottem and they all stink LOL!

I guess the best way to explain it is this, most of us limit screen time, which is definitely important. But for example, we spend a lot of time at an amusement park.. often times we're in long lines. Playing Heads Up is enjoyable, and we've become temporary BFFs with people waiting in those long lines with us who wanted to join in on the game. It's a lot of fun. When he was younger Tic Tac Toe was our go-to, and we still play it now.

I see so many kids at amusement parks, and WDW, whining and complaining about waiting in line. Parents keep telling them "we're almost there" "stop complaining" etc etc.. maybe if those parents played an interactive game with their kids it might get them to stop complaining, better yet- they all might have a lot of fun and make a good memory.
I'm not talking about handing them an iPad to play Minecraft.. but there are many interactive apps that are perfect for those times. What's the difference if those games are using an electronic or using paper? I don't think an electronic is inherently bad when used in an interactive way during specific situations.
My opinion anyway.

Totally agree! Slightly unrelated, but there's a charades app that's great for queues. You hold the phone against your forehead with the screen facing out and your friend(s) have to get you to guess the word on the screen. Even the trivia game in the queue for Soarin' (which is always an excruciatingly long wait on standby) is a phone app, and often gets those in line to talk about the questions with each other.

But I'm also totally fine w/ kids (and adults) texting/emailing/taking pictures/playing games as they walk through the park, during dinner, or wherever else, which I'm aware is kind of polarizing.

I'm not assuming that people don't know, but just in case here's a photo of the Heads Up game, we have the children's version as well..
So while it's technically using an electronic, it's really the same as holding a card.

Yes! That's exactly what Heads Up is! We do have the charades app too. We almost always have other people in line joining us.

..but the original post didn't just refer to rides.
You are correct - - - - - - I made a comment about children watching videos while walking around the park, in lines, in rides or in their strollers.
I stated that I would never understand this logic - and I branched off into another idea about controlling electronics and perhaps with social disconnectedness.
If you are having a fun time with a group of people taking selfies, posting to friends, playing heads up - is not quite the same as a family of 4 with their heads burred in their cell phones, not saying a word to each other while they eat dinner or wait in a line.
Certain, not all, use of electronics inherently bring a level of social disconnectedness -
To me personally, this directly clashes with my reasons for a family vacation. Communication, unity, togetherness and interest in each other.

That's not an option for everyone unfortunately.

1. Phone is a camera for many people.
2. Work could call.
3. Much easier to grab a FP on an app rather than going to a kiosk.
4. Schedule on MDE.

I don't think it's generational, just that people use their phone for different things.

I know it's not an option for everyone, but was just saying how I do it, per oP's request/statement. I'm even considering a smart phone at this time, so will probably do a l80 and be like everyone else.:)

I agree. I just see so many people say "why do you need a phone in the parks!" Etc in many threads.. not just this one..just wanted to point out that phones can actually do some pretty cool things, while interacting together.. maybe some of the people with whining kids in line for Soarin' or Dinosaur etc could download some family apps to entertain all of them. :)

Such a blessing and a curse. Would we be better off if Blackberrys would have never been invented? I think there's so many Yes and No answers to that question, with each one being correct.lol

Yeah, see–dimming and silencing phones during shows and rides for common courtesy, I definitely agree with! This? Not so much. But I think it's an argument you're always going to see leveraged against the latest generation in any period. In the 90s it was Nintendo Gameboys, tamagotchi and other handhold electronics. In the 60s, television was a vast wasteland. Etc. If a family is completely absorbed in their phone for 10+ minutes, they're probably taking a mental break, not getting along very well with each other at that moment, or something else is at play here. Either way, I doubt that's been a constant for their entire vacation–catching a glimpse of a family as they walk by doesn't tell you much about the other 100+ hours of their vacation. But I've found that 9/10 times, when you walk past a family of four with their heads buried in their cell phones, two minutes later most of them will have moved on to something else. Like I said, it's a blip on the radar of an enormous vacation, and takes about as much time as a bathroom break if not less.

How bright is your phone? I always have mine on low power mode whenever I'm out and about.. I can't see how a quick photo can impact the ride experience for other people in a different car.

Any illumination in a dark room is going to be bright. These rides are called "dark rides" for a reason, no?

Rides like the HM are dark the whole way through. The ambiance of the ride is to be dark. So when ANYTHING is lit up, be it in another car or whatever, it's a distraction. Distractions take your attention away from what is to be looked at.

If you're unable to see the impact, then you're part of the problem.

I'm okay with them in most of the park. I actually go on electronic devices myself when waiting for food at a restraunant (And I would do that for most of the line queues too if they worked while in them).

On the actual rides though? no. If you're just gonna go on your phone the entire time on the rode, why even go on the ride in the frist place?
