Electronic devices on rides :(

Using a phone as a camera and playing/ watching videos during a ride/show are complete different. My issue is with the latter.

People mover vs Pirates of the Caribbean - - phone/ tablet internet surfing will effect differently in each ride.
I'm talking about the dedicated dark indoor rides and shows. Cell phones/tablets even in their darkest setting cast a huge amount of light.

I don't care about the electronics/internet really - its the light created by them that effects my trip.

Surfing the internet while on a ride/ show is a kin to walking around an art gallery and only staring at your cell/tablet for the duration of your visit - - - WHAT WAS THE POINT ??

I'm ok with people using their phone to record videos and take pictures (no flash) on attractions, but if they're playing games or checking facebook or online shopping, that's when I get very aggravated. IMO, tablets shouldn't be allowed on attractions.

True and honest question here. Outside of a dark ride where the light from the display can be a clear distraction to others, I'm unclear how someone else using a phone is causing me a distraction. For example, is someone catching up on emails or social media while cruising around on the PeopleMover a distraction? What I'm trying to separate is how much of this is an actual distraction to you (like light in a dark ride) vs someone who just wants to project their desire to personally disconnect from electronics on their trip onto others. Everyone has different standards of what's okay when it comes to electronics that works for them.

Since a large portion of folks visiting the parks are using their smartphones as their camera, it's impossible and unrealistic to expect them to not be in use it for that purpose, even on an attraction.

iPads however as cameras should be banned at all costs, both for the light they produce and the shear surface area they block for others.
Yes it's a distraction on PeopleMover! There are areas of TOTAL darkness and the cell phone glow during that time is exceedingly annoying, yet I see it all the time. This is a perfect example of how people are oblivious to how annoying they are being to others.

Maybe these people are checking the My Disney Experience App to make sure their dinner reservations are in, or see where the nearest bathroom is, because all that water on Splash Mountain.... It's a little silly to condemn people using their phones in the park when Disney actively encourages it.

I'm at Disney pretty much every other day and I personally haven't seen this.
I don't see how you could not see it every trip I see just about everyone running around like their phone is surgically attached to their hand. Every ride every show every inch of the place, and besides ruining ride experiences I have noticed a growing number of people that are holding up lines because the entire group is playing the heads up game on someones phone.

Sometimes I use my phone in long queues to pass the time but I would be too paranoid to even pull out my phone on ANY ride. Not explaining to my mom or a CM that my phone is now on the ground somewhere between Madame Leota and the graveyard.
Yes me too, and I want to know their battery secrets, I fully charge my phone and two power banks every night and that barely gets me back to the hotel at night, and Im not constantly on my phone, I might check it every now and then but I don't play games or anything like that.

They encourage taking pictures, even with flash at Festival of the Lion King, but that doesn't mean you break out the flash on Pirates.

Time and place for everything. It's not silly to condemn people being rude and annoying.

You personally haven't seen people using electronic devices while in a dark ride? :cautious:

Which "Disney" do you go to? Because I'd like to visit this secret "Disney" where nobody ruins the dark rides with iPxx's, video recorders, cell phones and smart phones, lighting up the ride with a myriad of small, brightly lit screens.

@NickMaio I get your feelings for sure. I often find myself in your shoes..what the heck is going on here?

When cell phones became more of a thing was when DH and I started going together. We had iPhones and what we'd do was leave them in our room safe all day, maybe checking them once or twice a day during a park break or at night. The original-ish iPhone/app technology wasn't nearly as advanced as it is now nor were people as connected to their personal technology so it was like, why did we need them? We had a digital camera to take photos with. And what are we even checking it for? Texts and calls I guess.

We continued leaving our phones in our room until a trip or two ago where we broke down and said "what if something happens, we have to have them" and now we keep them in ziplock bags in our backback, barely taking them out, only for photos really which we don't really do a ton of anymore.

I don't want to have to carry them. I guess I don't "have to", I choose to. But when we have older, sick family, older parents back home, it's hard to think about not being able to be gotten in touch with. And let's get real, many of us are just so connected to our phones for a variety of reasons. It feels weird for e to not have it. It feels like serious FOMO when you don't have your phone sometimes.

Technology use on rides still boggles my mind. Like...you're on a ride in Walt Disney World. Unless it is a dire emergency (which likely it's not) can't you just enjoy what you're doing and attend to your technology when you exit? And a game on a ride...I can't...

On the walkways is one thing -- in a dark ride is something completely different.

Disney has pretty much made it necessary to have your phone with you. Make Fastpass+ reservations, mobile order your food, etc. Now that is completely different than using it on a ride and disrupting others. Use it while in line or in the parks, but not on the attraction.

I agree that guest using their cell phones inside of dark rides ruin the experience. There have been so many times when my family has been in Madam Leota's room as the doom buggies circle and face the center and some asshat takes a photo with their flash on, momentarily 'blinding' us. I wish there were consequences for this.

Disney states, 'no flash photography' for a reason. It might be better to add another statement to their announcement that mentions that your photos will turn out better without the flash when inside a dark ride.

I am no Luddite, and I admit I have been one of those people glued to a phone during a vacation with the in-laws. I didn't plan the trip and I was dealing with work stuff that could not be put off. That said, if my kids were playing games on their phones while at Disney it would be the last family trip to Disney. I am not spending 5 grand so they can play candy crush.

I was in the theater last week and a kid was playing her nintendo during the whole movie which was really distracting for me so I also sympathize with those who find the screens distracting.
