Disney uses air-returns (like for air conditioning) many times in attractions to create virtual "walls". Some are used to keep temperatures separated... in this case, I would guess it could be used to keep the mist/fog effect from dissipating too quickly during a train-sequence.
Yeah, so what exactly is the problem here? It is officially announced by Disney that the ride is already open on all web sites associated with everest, and they have sent letters to all current visitors explicitely stating that the ride is open.
