Disney Parks Blog has a new post up about World of Color, and also a subtle mention of the changed name for DCA.

It's no longer "Disney's California Adventure", it's now "Disney California Adventure". They've dropped the apostrophe and letter 's', and there is a new logo as well. http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2010/05/first-look-new-‘world-of-color’-tv-spot/

Things are changing at DCA. But I wonder what this means for Disney's Animal Kingdom?

Maybe it's just me, but Disney California Adventure is the one of the dumbest changes I can think of. The " 's " sounds much, much better.

I agree, I mean " 's " makes alot more sense, and I think the new logo is not their best work...

I like the new design.

Dunno why there's no "'s". It sounds like I can't speak english when I say Disney California Adventure. Although, no one calls it Disney California Adventure or Disney's Animal Kingdom, so I don't see it as a huge issue.

Exactly. Without the 's it sounds like bad English. Just drop the Disney completely if you don't want a 's in there.

The Disney California Adventure Park? What is this, a partnership between California and Disney, like Disney-MGM Studios? I don't get it... :veryconfu

The logo has a fun look to it, but the name sounds like mangled Engrish.

Course, we're all fond of Cinderella/Sleeping Beauty Castle (to the point that people insist making them possessive would sound wrong), so maybe the new name will sound normal after a while.

It's kind of like "Epcot Center" and "MGM"... I'll probably just always call it "Disney's California Adventure", as will most people. I can just see it now.. 10 years from now, fans will be complaining on this site about the "stupid" guests who refer to it as "Disney's" instead of the proper "Disney" and saying things like, "Why don't they research their vacation destination more thoroughly?"

It's confusing, but look at it this way.

It's not Disney the company's park, it's Walt Disney and his California adventure, the Disney California Adventure. With the new opening area and other addiions i see them making the change.

Still confusing and silly now. I still think they should name it "Walt Disney's California Adventure."

I guess if you think about it, it might be an attempt at consistency. You have Disneyland right across the way. No one would ever call it Disney's Land. Likewise in Florida, it's Walt Disney World...no possessive. Those are so established they sound exactly right. Disney's World would just sound awkward.

It still sounds strange at DCA, though. It will be interesting to see if Animal Kingdom has a similar change.

Love the new logo. Fits in with the new classic/early Disney feel they're going for (the letter style is reminiscent of the old Disney cartoons). I don't mind the name change.. everyone I know calls it California Adventure. I don't think anybody ever refers to it by its full name anyway.. people either call it DCA or California Adventure.

The Logo has grown on me, and I agree with sponono that it has that early Walt Disney cartoon feel to it. But the name ehh still not feeling it, plus I thought I heard somewhere it was going to be changed to Walt Disney's Califorinia Adventure because the park kind of revolves around him...

It's not Disney the company's park, it's Walt Disney and his California adventure, the Disney California Adventure.

This just strengthens the argument that the name should remain the same. If it's "his", then the term should be possessive.

I still think they should name it "Walt Disney's California Adventure."

I disagree. That implies Walt personally had something to do with the park.

If they really want to give DCA its own identity, they need to make seperate nametags for each park. For the whole time DCA has been open, cast members working there and inside Disneyland park have used the same nametag. If guests were to see two separate nametags, with each park's distinct logo, it would establish that the parks are indeed separate entities.

New logo is kinda cool. I like the old school Disney cartoon font. The old logo was a little bit classier, but still too closely connected in the minds of most to what will always be considered the dark days of the park's history.

The name change sure is a head scratcher though! Perhaps they want people to call the park by only California Adventure much like no one calls Epcot as Disney's Epcot. With the "Disney" no longer easily flowing into the name of the park, most guests will probably view it as a mark of ownership and not necessarily park of the pronounced name.

I probably just put way more thought into that than needed though... :)

Not really.

I can only imagine the weeks of PowerPoint shows and executive lunches and perhaps even an off-site retreat that Disney executives took to make this simple decision.

from Dateline Disneyland, a look back at the early Mickey Mouse cartoons reveals the inspiration for DCA's new logo

cartoontitles.jpg

With the park taking on early 20th century themes, the new logo makes sense for the park's new direction. The new logo borrows from early Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck cartoon title cards, which fits with the time period and the new infusion of Disney characters at California Adventure.

DLR President George Kalogridis explains the name change..

Disney or Disney's?

A big topic on people's minds was the park name change from Disney's California Adventure to Disney California Adventure, which Disneyland President George Kalogridis eloquently explained to D23. "I don't know that it's a lot of science. In the transformation process, we believe it's better to talk about California as more of a state of mind. So California Adventure is an ongoing adventure, and it's presented by Disney. That's why it's not possessive in terms of 'this is our interpretation of California.' It's more [than that]. We are presenting a story about the adventure of life in California, which is ever-evolving, as is Disneyland. Which is why Disneyland is called Disneyland, not Disney's Land."

So assuming that's a real explanation and not execu-speak, this might be limited to DCA and not leak over to DAK, DHS, WDW's water parks, etc.

He makes the "It's Disneyland, not Disney's Land" argument a few of us have pointed out. That suggests this might just be a DLR thing, intended to bring a little more consistency to that resort.

I still think it sounds a little awkward, but it's not awful.
