My family in Jersey just told me there was a small earthquake not too long ago. Anybody up there in the northeast feel it?

WASHINGTON — Thousands of people evacuated buildings across Washington, D.C., and New York City on Tuesday after a moderate earthquake in Virginia that was also felt as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C.

..Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were among the areas evacuated.

Centered 87 miles from the nation's capital, the quake was a magnitude 5.9, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

At the U.S. Capitol, light fixtures swung and the building shook for about 15 seconds while the tremor hit, NBC News reported.

In New York City, NBC reported debris fell from the attorney general's office, causing a brief panic as people ran from the area.

Government buildings in the city, including City Hall, were evacuated. The 26-story federal courthouse in lower Manhattan began swaying and hundreds of people were seen leaving the building.

A mild tremor was even felt by NBC reporters with President Barack Obama during his vacation on Martha's Vineyard, an island off Massachusetts.

The earthquake’s epicenter was between Charlottesville and Richmond, Va., the USGS reported. It was 3.7 miles deep.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.

I'm in Manasquan, NJ and didn't feel it. I was in the car though driving when it apparently happened so I probably mistook it for a bump in the road. My car has the big sport tires so every slight bump feels like a major impact.

My in laws live in Toms River and they didn't feel it either; but they're a little older, so they might have mistook it for gas or something! :p

This Virginia seismic zone gets about 4-6 minor tremors per year. Quakes rating above a magnitude 3 happen about every 3-4 years.

I personally did not (Pittsburgh, PA) but my office is in the basement.

BUT the surrounding businesses in the area that are on the main st. did! Crazy!

DEFINITELY felt it in Camden NJ just across from Philadelphia - building shook for a good 30 seconds or so. We had to evacuate once it stopped and stayed outside for about 20 minutes.

Looks like it was upgraded to a 5.9.

I am also in MD and I felt it on the 6th floor at work. We were told to evacuate and were not outside for long. We worked for a little bit and were told to go home.

Not old, just vintage.
I definitely felt it here in Freehold NJ. My house was bouncing, chandelier in dining room was swinging, pictures were swaying, and a few things on shelves fell over. I didn't know what was going on at first and by the time I figured it out I realized I didn't know what to do. I just sat on the couch in disbelief and waited for it to stop.

this is nothing like anyone has experienced in 3 generations. it was quite a ride here in VA.

The best analogy someone gave was it like a washing machine was off balance but a heck of a lot bigger.

They have to blast to do escavations around here due to the rock, and it's quite common. It started like that, but built up so that the whole house was shaking and went on for quite a bit.. probably about a minute solid.

We're about 50m from the epicenter.

Quite true. However, if you were judging the severity of the quake via Facebook, twitter and news reports you would think it was Fukushima 2.0.

you laugh.. but the quake was less then 20m from North Anna nuke power plant.. which was recently ranked 7th most vulnerable to earthquake damage by the NRCC and is approx 50m from Calvert Cliffs.. another nuke plant. North Anna was designed to survive a 5.9-6.1 quake.. and a 5.9 almost on their doorstep is exactly what they got.

North Anna lost power, but it's backup power systems operated as intended.

This is also an area with virtually no quake building standards.. so any sizable quake stands to have the potential for serious damage.

Actually I am pretty sure they do have seismic requirements in the VA building code. No idea how long they have been there or how well they are enforced but I am fairly certain they are there.

Just standard building codes... nothing residential or commercial is built specifically to be quake resistant.

Pretty significant quake to be felt from SC to NY to MI. Here it wasn't much worse then normal rumblings from escavation detonations... but you also have a very terrorist skitish area here... so when this stuff happens, all the fed goes into emergency mode... evacuate buildings.. etc. That's where most of the messy stuff is.. in downtown DC.. due to all the people flooding.

national cathedral has taking some damage to it's central tower.
