Dumbo's Circusland and the FLE

I was recently browsing The Neverland Files (great site by the way for those of you who haven't gotten around to checking it out) and came across this:

http://www.theneverlandfiles.com/tnf/disneyland/dumboscircusland.php

"Dumbo's Circusland, also sometimes known as simply Circusland, was, as the name implies, a land themed around Dumbo and the circus, but more than this was going to be a home for the more wacky Disney characters that didn't quite fit into the elegant Fantasyland.
Walt Disney loved the circus, and attempts at including a circus in Disneyland go back as far as the first panoramic painting of Disneyland. But pretty much all attempts, even the Mickey Mouse Club Circus, never quite worked. Walt's original Imagineers even designed their own circus miniland that never got built, a picture of which I include in the gallery.
Circusland was an attempt to change all that, developed by Tony Baxter at the same time as Discovery Bay. Sharing five acres of undeveloped land with Discovery Bay, Circusland's entrance would have been where the Fantasyland Theater currently stands, heralded by banners, marquees and flags. Here, guests would find a relocated Dumbo the Flying Elephant, now located high up on a raised platform (an ironic inversion - Tony Baxter made the decision to move the raised up Astro Orbitor to the ground in Tomorrowland), therefore freeing up much needed room in the Fantasyland courtyard.
Guests would find a Pinocchio dark ride (this was before it was added to Fantasyland), including Stromboli's Little Puppet Theater in the queue. Mickey's Mad House would be another thrilling dark ride, based on the classic 1930's black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons and ragtime music. One possible, the Western Balloon Ascent, would be a transportation ride between Circusland and Discovery Bay, allowing guests to travel in hot air balloons between the two new lands. Alternatively, a new path would have connected the two lands, north of the existing Fantasyland.
The major attraction of the land would have been Circus Disney, an animatronics spectacular featuring classic Disney characters performing in their own circus acts. Shere Khan and King Louis would be part of the wild animal menagerie, guests could marvel at "the Amazing Flying Dumbo - Ninth Wonder of the World!", "Horace Horsecollar - the One Man Rubberband!" and "the Reluctant Dragon - Fire Eater!", they could then pass through Clown Alley, and then witness the spectacular finale - the daredevil act "the Flying Goofys"."

Interesting to see that a large circus-themed area had been planned before (this time for Disneyland); I wonder how much of this inspired the current plans for the new Dumbo area.

Perhaps the rumored Great Goofini overlay of the barnstormer has some roots to "the Flying Goofys" ?

I'm pretty underwhelmed by the whole circus idea – to me it's kinda cheap and tacky compared to the grandure of Fantasyland and it's castles.

But I have to say, that article made me really excited for what could be. I was expecting more games, etc. but if they end up putting some more dark rides, a show, and some kind of balloon-drop type ride, I think it could be a lot of fun (kinda like the new Toys Story Land that's cropping up at a couple of the other parks).

Only problem is, WDO doesn't seem to think on that big of a scale anymore. I'm afraid it's more likely to be a game area. M&G tents and a ride (like the junkyard spinners) plopped in the center.

I knew there were plans before. However, we are not getting anything close to whats above. We we will get will be way more underwhelming. Unless things change or they have another phase planned.

Yeah I hardly expect anything of this caliber to come to fruition in the new FLE, I was just more curious as to how much these previous projects influenced the plans for the new area.

They haven't even released any concept art yet, and I'm confident that WDI won't trry to pull off what they did with Dinoland again, so I'll reserve any judgement untl I see the land for myself.

At least this will silence the idiots who claimed "Walt wouldn't have wanted a Circus land." I hate when people pull the "Walt wouldn't have wanted" card.

It is nice to know that Walt's plans are somehow going to become a reality, even if they will materialize in a very different way.

I think a Renaissance-type fair would be more appropriate in Fantasyland than a circus. Maybe base its theming around Sword in the Stone and Robin Hood, or something. I share your worry that the circus area is just going to be a couple of lame carnival rides with a Dumbo overlay. The whole idea has never excited me much. I must say, though, that a circus with King Louis and Shere Khan AAs in it sounds pretty neat. Too bad it'll never come to fruition though...

A eal circus is fun because it involves animals and shows. A circus themed land would be lacking any big top events I would think. Not sure what the draw is except a circus themed land. Dumbo isn't even that great of a character and gets his own land?!?! WHile the Fab 5 get evicted and basially have no presence in the form of a ride or attraction in all of Disney save for Philharmagic and Mickey being in Fantasmic.

This may be an indication they are going with the Renaissance/Medieval Faire backstory which I think would work well with the rest of the FLE for the most part. Well except for the steam train problem. It will be very interesting to see how they work out all these details.

But wait...isn't a Renaissance Fair type of theme supposed to be what is going on in the current Fantasyland? I have read countless criticisms of that...the tent and awning type of theming that they have over each attraction etc....for that to ever really be popular either, I think.

I am no fan of Circusland and agree that it seems to just be a way of finding a way to make Dumbo fit. Since we have not seen any drawings though, I am trying to stay open minded.

One way that you could incorporate Dumbo, and a whole slew of characters for that matter, would be to find a way to theme the area to the Mickey Mouse Club. Dumbo was in the opening sequence along with so many others. It could be a separate land to keep the "7 themed lands" premise of the MK and would also give a place for the Fab 5 to hang while allowing more promise than what I think a circus will allow.

Except that Walt apparently decided not to build it. :animwink:

Love it.

Yeah, the "spinning in his grave" comment irks me every time. There's no way of knowing what a famously spontaneous, ever-evolving creative genius that died over four decades years ago would do in the 21st century. The best anyone can do is guess.
