'Dubailand' aims to be Middle East Orlando

I understand that many people have religious/cultural reasons for not visiting certain countries. I can respect this, and I think that most of us are mature enough to understand that Dubai, or any Arab nation, is not for everyone. There are many countries that I wouldn't want to visit because of my religion, race, nationality, or political views.

There have been posters who have given quite valid reasons both for and against visiting. I think people are objecting to the opinion that NO ONE from the west would enjoy a visit. We all have different comfort levels; if I thought I was hated and would be in physical danger, I wouldn't want to be there. If it were just a matter of having to accomodate to different cultural mores, such as dressing more modestly, not being allowed in certain buildings, etc I would have to think about it. So, there are places that I would definitely avoid; many are in the Middle East, but not all of them.

But it's also discouraging to see people dismiss an area without actually having any knowledge of it.

thats the sad part - alot of it is ignorance of other cultures and societies.

What alot of people fail to realise there are ALOT of rich european/british/american/insert race here... expat's alike that reside over there, and more so every year. If anything big such as a kidnapping was to happen to a national - it would be in the media within 24 hours, like anywhere else in the world.

Not meaning to go all deep there, but unfortunatly like most things - this is the case...

Ill stop now, just brain farting - and its 1:30 am, drivel talking should be kept for the pub...

First off Dubai is not a nation. It is a city in the UAE where half of all residents are expats. Very cosmo.

Crime rates; globally speaking, is among the lowest in the world (America, the highest)

Dubai is significantly classier then central florida.

Of middle east areas, Dubai is extremely progressive in their attitudes towards women (by the way, America's 'progressive' attitudes leaves them with the highest per capita rape and assault numbers on women globally speaking).

Oh, and shopping. The biggest mall in the world is being completed, next to quite a few other impressive malls.

And yes, the heat.

1 am, their time, it 'feels like' 107 degrees.

Ouch. There are pros and cons for every place. To have a gut feeling of 'no way' is pretty ignant.

I'm a bit confused by the picture that goes with the article, whats with the bike on the coaster track?

I'm pretty sure the bike is part of a stunt show in the foreground.

Though they are pretty close to each other, apparently...
