That's freaky - I literally just stumbled upon that video not less than 20 minutes ago searching for SONY NEX-7 reviews.

:confused: It is pretty funny. Love the chick taking pictures of the flower.

see for me this really hits home... I work for money, weddings and portraits and all that jazz and you'll come across a million people with a million different definitions of what "pro" is. Some people say you need a studio with the latest strobes, some people say you need to earn 100% of your income from work, etc etc etc... the bottom line, 99% of the commission work I do lies between Friday night and Sunday morning... so why quit a day job with benefits and everything, although tomorrow is my last day due a "restructuring" ie a layoff.

point is, people don't know many "pro's" so the amount of questions I get from neighbors, friends, families, acquaintances is unreal and almost 99% of the questions focus on "will this ____X_____ make me a better photographer" ... a lens or a new body. People fail to realize that you're ultimately the one who composes and creates an image, your eye.

@ddbowdoin - you'll enjoy this rant too...

But this one is more about a guy being ed that other people are eroding his ability to charge for his services.
. That's essentially why I champion film so much, not only do I enjoy the process an the results it's a tool that helps you stand out from the rest. Every Tom, Dick and Harry can meet with a client and show a digital portfolio... But how about a light table with transparencies? Whether it be medium format or large format... And then you bust out a salt print and people really drop their jaws. I agree with him... There's a ton of amateur under cutters crowding the market

That's all well and good, but I'd be willing to bet most normal clients (non-photographers) can't tell the difference between a shot taken with a medium format camera or a $100 p&s. I'm not saying you're wrong, I think having a love for your craft is great, I just honestly think most people don't care and just want photos of their wedding where people's heads aren't cut off.

normally I'd agree with you and maybe it's because I'm up north in Boston (I guess more affluent and "cultured" people) but I have seen and heard from others that while it's still a niche market it's growing... there is a portion of society that is tired of the "made in china" model and a.) likes to support small business, b.) is attracted to the uniqueness of it. I'm obviously talking about affluent clients... not your average joe walking down the street

Great article. Can be applied to any business. Thanks for sharing

I'm not sure what is worse... people expecting free or lowballing you like crazy.

I have an extended family member who has like 8 kids ranging from an infant to 10, Irish twins year in and year out (catholic family). In the fall I am working pretty much every weekend with the folliage here in New England for school pictures and Christmas cards and such. So she emails me and she's like "wow, I love the work lately from the park and I know you're running a special, what is it?" I went through everything... X dollars gets you a session, usually lasts about an hour and a half, and for a special we're running 6 free prints (8x10's)". At this point a lot of my pricing structures are custom based on projects because of family sizes, intended use, print expectations etc and she comes back and told me the most she could spare was 20 dollars.... Now, I am in the position that I would have been less offended if she had just asked me to do the work for free. 20 dollars won't even cover the gas for me to get there and back, do people think?

there have been people who REFUSE to believe this story... but alas, it is very true.

I have had loads of people ask me to shoot work for free, or for exposure... and honestly, the times where it is valid or appropriate makes up like 1% of the time.

My favorite ... "we don't money in our budget for this project, but if you do this work we will be able to use you in the future when we have larger budgets"
