Driving to the World From the Northeast

It's time to start putting together a plan of attack for WDW 2014! The big game changer this year is making the decision to drive instead of fly. With the aid of my Prius there is MUCH money to be saved by undertaking such an endeavor. I, however have minimal experience with long road trips. I know my girlfriend and I can hack it by driving in shifts but is it as doable as I am telling myself? Most of what I read seems to suggest it is not all that bad.

Are any of you experienced with the same or similar drive? Any suggestions, secrets or horror stories? Bare in mind we plan to do it in one shot, no overnight stop.

Educate me! :)

Driving makes the Christmas trip affordable for us. Just south of Philadelphia. We leave at 330-4 am so that we are below the DC beltway before rush hour. We change out drivers at gas station so about 350 miles each. Takes us til about 8pm with a lunch and dinner stop. We check in, hit the rack and are good to go next morning. Kids are older so put me in back with my wifi hotspot and they gorge on Disney animation the whole way down. Have fun. It's not as bad as people tell you. Think about. Personally it's less stress than the airport around the holidays.

Thank you all for your experiences! I guess I should mention we're leaving from Rhode Island. Estimated time is 18 hours. We're staying for 8 days and I am a seasoned WDW vacationer. So one day mostly sacrificed is not a big deal. Also, our WDW routine involves heading back to the hotel every day around 2 for a 2 to 3 hour nap. We don't subject ourselves to full exhausting days at the parks. I could never imagine doing WDW that way! Upon arrival we're planning to check in, eat and if luck is on our side get our room a bit early so we can crash. Followed potentially by Illuminations and a drink and then back to the hotel for bed.

All in all I am not too concerned with being too tired to enjoy the vacation! :)

I am driving from Southern CT in December 2 drivers - I am taking the overnight. Hubby is a sleeper. It says 20 hours for us so how is it 18 for you??

Also - anyone have a great route to share, let meknow.

We always drive! Saves us a ton even when we don't go straight through. This last trip we stayed at the super 8 in Brunswick Ga I think it was about $50 for the night prebooked AAA discount. We've done straight through and did Kennedy on the way down and this trip we did Kennedy and then straight home. If you're only going to Disney I'd try and stop. Stopping in Ga. on the way down gave us almost a full day at DTD on the way in! Happy driving!

The trip can be made shorter if you drive faster... lol... And also if you don't hit traffic.

Interesting! What route are you looking at? I'm in RI too and just pulled up maps on my phone, and it says about 17.5 hours from my house to Pop Century. That's going right down 95 the whole way.

My roommate and I have our semi-annual trip planned for next year. We always fly, but my boyfriend has been hinting that he wants to tag along... only he doesn't fly. If he wants to come, then we'll end up driving. It shouldn't be too bad with three drivers. My sister also lives in NC, so I'm thinking we would stop near her for the night, get dinner with them, then drive the 9 or so hours to WDW the next morning.
Since my sister lives in NC, my boyfriend and I have made that drive a few times now. The first time, we thought we would be cool and tell the GPS to avoid tolls. Biggest mistake possible. We got lost in the bowels of New Jersey and then DC, it was scary, the GPS lost signal... we lost a couple of hours. I'll gladly pay the tolls on the Jersey turnpike now.

3 drivers is the perfect way to do it. One can sleep while one drives and the third stays awake to keep the driver alert. We've driven it several times that way. It should only take about 18 hours, but we generally figure 20 due to traffic delays in the Northeast.

I have driven 26 times from either Mass or NH. 15 times as a kid from Mass and 11 times from NH as an adult (as the sole driver). Where is your starting point? Let me know what info you want and I am sure I can answer most questions.

This may sound old fashioned but I print out directions for long trips even if I know the roads and I always bring a map, just in case. When heading to Disney there is no such thing as being over prepared! LOL:D

When I was 23 I drove from Long Island and did it straight through. I left at 6am and got there around 10-10:30pm. I only stopped for gas/bathroom. I was alone and it was the days before GPS and smartphone also. I was meeting a friend once I got there, but it was fine at the time. I'm 38 now and would never do it lol!!

That's not old-fashioned, it's smart haha! I freaked out in some abandoned store parking lot in New Jersey when we lost signal. It wasn't a good day. :grumpy:

I drove straight thru once. Like about everyone said, when we got there we just crashed for the first day. And the whole time we were down there all I thought about was the drive back. I fly now.

We drive from RI to Maryland once a month to see our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter in Maryland. We have given up on the 95 through NY and the New Jersey Turnpike. Connecticut is always horrible but there is really no way to avoid it. We go over the Tappan-Zee and take 287 to 78 though PA. You could continue on to 81-S then pick up 77 S and that will put you back onto 95 in SC. This way we avoid NY, the GW Bridge, Baltimore, The Beltway in DC. If you are a AAA member, you can get a trip-tick...just tell them that you want to avoid those major traffic areas. If you chooses to go 95 listen to 880 AM for traffic news though CT, NY and NJ. Also....I would download "Waze" onto my smartphone. It is a great little "navigation ap" that gives you traffic, police spottings, accidents, congestion etc. If you use "Waze", be sure to keep the phone charging as it really eats your battery. Also, If you go 95, get a Fast Pass to avoid delays at tolls.
And...as everyone else said.....try to stop at least for one night, for your safety and for the safety of the other drivers on the road. Have a great time!

I have driven down to WDW from Syracuse NY and back on two different occasions. The first time I drove down and stopped in Savannah Georgia. I believe we left at 6am and arrived at like 9pm in GA. The exit had plenty of nice hotels, however they were all booked when we arrived and we ended up in a Red Roof Inn. I was scared. Would not stay there again but had no choice. Woke up early the next morning and drive maybe 4 hours and arrived at our resort. Wasn't burnt out really. Drive back we made it to NC.. Mount something. because of a heavy rain storm that was delaying our travel. Woke up next day and drove the rest of the way. Was burnt from the trip and driving.

The second time we made reservations at a nicer hotel in Savannah. Made it there around the same time, woke up next morning and made it to the resort around the same time. The drive down always seems the easiest because your excited and going somewhere nice. This time I decided to drive all the way back. BIG MISTAKE. We both took shifts on and off on the way back and I can tell you that at 1am, 2am we were both very zombie like but were so close to home it didn't make sense to stop for a room. So we toughed it out. Made it home at like 3 or 4am.. Crashed and slept till like 8pm that night. Our sleep was off for days. We were zombies and just miserable. I vowed after that I was done driving to WDW and the few extra hundred dollars it takes to fly is well worth not having to risk all the things that can go wrong driving, the time spent driving, the cost of driving. You have to calculate all costs into driving. The gas, the hotel, then the food, the things that could go wrong mechanically or saftey/accident, and lastly and probably most importantly the time involved with driving. if the difference is $100-$200 per person for flights you save. Trust me it isn't worth it. You would need to save $500 or more to make it worth it after you have calculated all the costs.

otherwise you are buying your airfare and nothing else. you wont need meals since your there in 4 hours or less usually, you wont need gas, you wont need a hotel in between, the risk of you getting into an accident or something mechanical going wrong is slim to none and the responsibility is on someone else to make arrangements if something does go wrong.

I'm sure with some friends you guys will do fine and it will be fun but I think eventually you will see the savings isn't really much.

BTW I got a speeding ticket in Virginia once. So that washed any and all savings and then some vs. flying that year. Was not fun..

Def recommend getting a trip tik through AAA. they show you known construction for your planned route. Def use WAZE on your smart phone. Its live reporting from other drivers reporting traffic, accidents ect.. so you can look ahead for any issues. and have a good GPS. one you are familiar with incase of traffic that you can reroute around it and save time.

Good luck and safe travels. :)

I've done the drive twice, figuring maybe the first was worse than I was making it out to be, so I gave it another shot.

DON'T DO IT! I don't care how much the airfare is, it's worth it. (Done the drive from NJ) It's long, miserable, and sooooo boring.

Virginia just goes on forever, you're gonna feel like you'll never get there. I'm telling you, it's just not worth it.

Depending on when you hit Northern Virginia it can take hours just to drive the 60 miles or so from DC to Fredericksburg.

We usually fly since we can get non-stops from BWI, Dulles or National and have usually gotten decent fares. But lately it's getting harder to find good air fares and if that trend continues I could see us driving more.
