Driving in the US question!

Ok, here we go: I need to go the other way! Question: Am I allowed to do a U turn or do I have to cross the road and reach the street on the left?

It also depends upon where you live. In Florida, it's exactly as others have stated. (which can be interesting when combined with the right turn on red unless prohibited; imagine someone doing a u-turn with their green light, and someone making a right turn on red from the left)

In Washington DC, people make u-turns just about anywhere! It may not be legal, but it happens all the time.

Here in Canada, a vehicle with a green light has right-of-way over a vehicle with a red light. So if you're turning right on red you have to ensure the intersection is clear of on-coming traffic from both directions before proceeding. The vehicle doing a U-Turn on green has priority, so long as they've confirmed there is no on-coming traffic coming toward them.

My ex-wife had an accident while making a U-Turn and the officer responding explained this in great detail to the other driver while writing him up for driving with undue attention... :D Since the other driver was charged, my insurance waived the deductible so the repairs were free [and the body shop fixed stuff that wasn't from the accident while they were at it :D].

Of course the car with the green has right of way. Having right of way, and getting right of way, are two different things.

I was already driving when the right turn on red law was passed (in response to last century's gasoline shortage) and the main complaint by opponents was that it would lead to increased accidents because of people treating it as a stop sign (turn when a space opens) rather than a red light (turn when there is no visible oncoming traffic) It's become (at least around here) turn if you think you can make it before being hit.

So those with the right of way have learned to drive defensively, at least in Florida.

Same thing at lighted intersections. If you follow the letter of the law, and slow down preparing to stop on yellow, you're likely to be rear-ended. If you proceed as soon as the light turns green, without pausing a second to make sure no one is running through the red (because they didn't slow down on yellow, or even sped up instead of slowing down, so can't stop for the red), you're likely to be T-boned.

Thanks!!
These intersections at 4 lane roads make me so nervous!!! :hammer:
Not to mention the traffic lights, which are almost...AFTER the intersection. Isn't it kind of crazy?

If I recall from a movie somewhere, "Red means stop, Green means go, Yellow means...go very fast" Hate when I remember the line but not the movie.

I realize that you are probably going to be driving in florida since this is a Walt Disney World board..however. If you are driving in any other states you should make sure you acquaint yourself with the laws of those states, because each state has its own set of laws. For instance i am from Michigan and in Michigan "flippin a u" right there would be a no-no. We actually have designated lanes for doing u-turns...its actually called a "Michigan Left".

U turns at intersections controlled by traffic lights are not permitted in some states, even without a sign banning them. Laws can vary widely on U-turns from state to state.

Actually, if I remember correctly, there are quite a few traffic lights in Lake Buena Vista with a sign that says, "U-Turn Yield to Right Turn." Of course, it is Florida, so everyone just seems to do whatever they feel like while driving. The horrible driving habits are one of the reasons that I was glad to move back to New Jersey a few weeks ago. (Not that NJ is the best place for driving, either, but it is steps ahead of FL!)

Do we have signs in DC??? :ROFLOL:

Only those that haven't been stolen for the scrap metal.

DC is one of my least favorite places to drive, right after Manhattan. I really don't know how you do it! All of the streets seem to be one way in the same direction, and the roads are choked with crazy cab drivers and drunken congressmen.

I believe that's because at those intersections, the people exiting from the Downtown Disney parking lots have a green right-turn arrow when the LBV Blvd left-turn lanes have a green arrow. So without the sign, you'd have two people (one making a U-turn on LBV, the other turning right while exiting DD) both with a green arrow assuming they have the right-of-way. The sign thus gives the person exiting DD the right-of-way.

I wish they'd put one of those signs up down the street from me. We have a similar situation where a left-turn lane occasionally has people making U-turns into people taking a right on a green arrow.

Downtown Disney also has those "sometimes No Turn On Red" signs... They're lighted signs that turn on when the crosswalk signals are turned to "Walk" to keep people from pulling out and hitting pedestrians (even though the pedestrians have the right-of-way anyway)

When driving in the US, I'm more afraid of the other drivers than I am of breaking a law ;)

Well if you driver where tourists are your going to get a mess of driving habits because most people are confused. It has nothing to do with Florida.
