You have GOT to be kidding me??
I'm sorry, but I'm really quite surprised by what I'm reading on this thread about the South Park episode. It was a great (and hilarious) episode, no question about it. But to draw the conclusion that it was making references (or was some sort of homage) to Dreamfinder and Journey into Imagination is a MAJOR stretch. I guess this supports the theory that sometimes people truly do see what they want to see. The references to anything Disney in this episode were few and far between, and were vague at best. The Imaginationland segment of the show was FILLED with cartoon and fantasy characters, only a small handful of which could even be loosely attributed to Disney. From what I saw, the only parts that could even remotely be considered Disney references were as follows:
- A character looking remarkably like Jack Skellington appears for about 4 seconds in a group shot....and has absolutely no lines (This, by the way, is far and away the strongest reference to Disney in the entire episode).
- There is a Cinderella character who looks nothing like the Disney version of Cinderella, unless you consider the generic, and essentially feature-less blue dress to be a Disney reference...but that's a huge stretch. Keep in mind, of course, that Cinderella is not inherently a Disney character, and that many other cartoon studios have made versions of this story.
- There is a character who looks like he is maybe supposed to be Uncle Remus, and a rabbit character standing next to him at one point. Again, it's a vague reference at best, and might not even be intended to be a reference to Disney. As with Cinderella, Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit were originally non-Disney characters.
- The Mad Hatter appears in a group shot. Like the others, the Mad Hatter is not exclusively a Disney character.
Now let's consider just a small sampling among the multitude of non-Disney characters that appeared in the episode:
- Ronald McDonald
- The Lorax (Hey, wouldn't that be an Islands of Adventure reference?)
- Count Chocula
- Mario from Super Mario Brothers
- Humpty Dumpty
- The Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz
- A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
- A talking hammer
- A talking rocket
- H.R. Puffenstuff
- A Care Bear
- A Who (from Whoville....Again, could very well be a reference to IOA)
- The dragon from Dragonheart (complete with Sean Connery voice)
- A character from "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak
- A cartoon Ewok
- An Egyptian hieroglyph character (possibly a reference to the "Mummy")
- The Last Unicorn
- Pikachu
- A ghost
- Several characters from Greek Mythology
- A Transformer
- Raggedy Ann and Andy
- Mr Clean
- Charlie Brown
- Santa Claus
- A Smurf
- The Ant (from Ant and the Aardvaark)
- Sponge Bob Square Pants
Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but I think that it's just wishful thinking to believe this episode was intended as some sort of tribute or parody to Disney. For those of you remarking that no one on the South Park fan sites seem to "get it", open your eyes and realize there's nothing there to "get".
