Downtown Disney Water Show?

It doesn't make any sense for TDO to put WoC- a massive show costing a lot of money- into a public place for basically anyone to see for free. Even on the off-chance it may bring more people to DtD to shop, the ends just don't justify the means.

I would believe a Bellagio type smaller show would come here. or perhaps even a Pixie Hollow type light/water show. Just nothing to big/radical for free.

True. But what would be the purpose for adding a show to the lake area? Just to increase crowds?

Yea, just something to see. Nothing big- but it would cause more people to come to DtD and in turn shop and the cost wouldn't be that expensive I'd imagine.

Now, I think if they did that then that's a terrific reason to put in fountains. Also, good views for Saratoga Spring stayers. :sohappy:

No way. The amount of water traffic - and tourists - would preculude any expensive infrastructure being placed underwater.

Ooh, I didn't think about that. Along with all of the other excellent points here about the very high cost of WoC (rumored just over 100 Million for DCA) and the need to charge for it, my suggestion seems very silly in hindsight.

In the brilliant and timeless words of Emily Latella..... nevermind. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3FnpaWQJO0

No way its world of color, way to much equipment. Plus the water is deep at DTD. It would have to be something that they could barge in every night, in order to keep the channel free for boats coming in and out. Guess they could put it over by the balloon but that doesn't seem logical. Truthfully, DTD is way to crowded now, can you imagine even more people than they already have now every night. It would be a nightmare.

Wait, I though it was a ghost town. Can anyone clarify?

I agree with the barge concept. And that seems to be the new design for these things even if the water isn't deep due to the logistics of maintenance. Would it have to just have a single barge though or could there be several show elements with various viewing angles including from Saratoga Springs?

If they did somthing similar to the DL hotel fountain show posted earlier, except on a larger scale and on barges, I don't think it would be too expensive. And I agree that it would definately keep people around DTD to shop in the evening.

PI and West Side is a ghost town. As for Marketplace, it's completely packed. Mostly because that's the only place with things to really do, now. Walking through the entire place and watching the transition of crowds is definitely a sight to see.

I know our family can't be bothered to walk through the PI "deadzone" just to reach the handful of other whatnot shops on the west side (even when PI was open... there was still very little through there during the day and it felt creepy walking through there).

And if they started charging just to get in to DTD, we'd stop going altogether. Who in their right mind charges an entrance fee to a mall?? Even if there is entertainment (case in point, Church Street Station).

So, I asked my wife if there was a Bellagio-style show closer to the West side, if that would be enough for us to go over there... She says if it was just the water fountain show, probably not. However, if it was the Pirate show like at Treasure Island in Las Vegas, now that would be something she'd want to see.

In my opinion, some sort of free street or water show with a Cirque tie-in would make much more sense... But that's just me talking.

I am thinking along these exact lines. It couldn't be something that takes business from AMC, Disneyquest or especially Cirque. Something that compliments or even promotes the entertainment offerings at DTD rather than providing an alternative to them.

The Save Pleasure Island blog reports that the boats from the resorts north of the lake would go to the Marketplace only while the boats that cycle through DTD itself would be eliminated. But it's just a rumor.

Just to add one point that I haven't seen mentioned here yet:
From an engineering standpoint, only a low-key water show (meaning low-key water/fountain equipment) would be feasible in this location. That is, something along the lines of the fountains used in Illuminations or whatnot. A fountain show such as World of Color or The Fountains of Bellagio would require a controlled/man-made lagoon for the sake of the precision equipment. A natural lagoon, such as that bordering DTD, would quickly wreak havoc on precision water nozzles and pump equipment. The amount of sediment, especially sand, in the water would quickly and completely deteriorate such equipment and render poor show quality quickly.
Like I said, any such show would require a controlled environment where the water quality can be controlled and maintained.

Now, the barge idea: that may be possible (all equipment could be serviced/maintained off-stage in a proper maintenance shop), plus it would be a lot lower-tech than a sophisticated omnidirectional nozzle show system.

Nevertheless, I think it would be a great venue to have some sort of a water show. I bet it would really increase traffic in the area and give a lot more draw for people to linger around PI, eat, drink, etc.

This makes sense especially after hours. It really isn't far from the Marketplace to the West side. By eliminating the water taxi people would be encouraged to stroll around the area.

Interesting and I think the last paragraph is the key to a successful show. Illuminations uses fountains in water similar to the lake at DTD. So I'm thinking lower tech devices might work. Also, I would think "waterscreen" technology could work and animation/music projections could be the centerpiece of any shows. This allows for seasonal shows and even features (short commercials) that showcase the areas entertainment options.

As I stated in earlier post. The Fantasy Waters show that Disneyland Hotel used to have on barges would be the perfect fit IMHO. Nice simple show that could moved out for showing then moved out of way in daytime for traffic etc.

Nice simple show.

Ah, that was such a cheesy, fabulous show! It started in the 1970's and was put out of its misery a few years ago. Thanks for the link to the YouTube version!

But it wasn't on barges. It was in a little custom built amphitheater in the corner of the Disneyland Hotel grounds, behind the sandy pool area. It wasn't much to look at during the day, and it was very 1970's looking.

If they do something at DTD in WDW, I'm sure they will incorporate at least some of the new World of Color technology. It can't just be dancing waters set to music circa 1975.

Sorry about that. I actually meant having the Fantasy waters show like at Disneyland hotel but put on barges instead of what they had as shown in youtube video and your picture TP2000.

I'm bad. Need to check what I'm writing next time.

Have the changing Promo videos like on todays billboards during day and then the Fantasy waters show at night. Would bring people there and isn't that the idea!

Yes, add traditional street food vendors and entertainment and it's a perfect combination. I was thinking the barge near HoB/Cirque could have a "Sky Dance" type feature that plays shortly before the Cirque showtimes to act as an enticement for people to see the show. Actual Cirque people could put on the promotion. Or music videos could be shown on a waterscreen right before a musical act takes the stage at the HoB to drive ticket sales there.

I dont think that it will really matter what they put there. I think they closed pleasure island prematurly and they know it. but they are trying to figure out anything that will bring in some money at all since they have lost alot of money by closing the clubs.
