Downtown Disney update

Well, Raven. I hope you are right. I hope something is announced soon. And I hope the plan is one of the large and jaw dropping ones.

But I doubt it.

DTD plans are being finalized. Hopefully soon they will announce something and the new DTD will SPRING to life! :)

Raven I think the big question is, which plan are they moving forward with? Is it the large scale plan people have been drooling over? Or is it the much more likely smaller version of just trying to fix what was there without any real expansion?

Downtown Disney could be fantastic depending on what they move forward with.

Agreed. But not equal to a theme park experience. Perhaps close but not quite the same. Except for those really into shopping like a certain spirit who haunts this place. Heh.

I don't spend thousands to goto FL just to shop - and if they still sell the same crap they've been pushing lately, or bring in merchants or entertainment I can find within a 60mile radius of home... none of that is interesting to me. I goto WDW to see theme parks, unique entertainment, and relaxing activities.

No matter what is announced there will always be people on here that don't like it. Some people expect every WDW project to be earth shattering and will never be satisfied. But it's not a simple rehab here. It's a whole new concept utilizing additional space and redeveloping parking and traffic patterns as well.

There are certain scenarios where Downtown Disney would once again be more than shopping and dining.

Yeah, it won't be close to a theme park. Closest it would have been is the wonderful New Orleans plans from way back when.

People always state theynever go to DTD it is a waste of time. The crowds that were there this past Saturday night were incredible. I in 6 years living here have never seen it jammed up like mainstreet. Not just the PI area but the whole entire site.
I think what also gets lost is that is is a fun place for us "locals" to go and hang out without incurring costs of one of the parks. I enjoy just going to DTD to grab a bite at Raglan Road, Portobello, Fulton Crab House etc... Rember this is the place where these theme restaurants exist in Central FL.

I have to agree with this even though I'm not a local. We've been making our Disney-only trips in the fall, but also go to Orlando in the spring to visit family. To get my Disney-fix during the spring trips, we make a stop at DTD for some shopping, food, and overall merriment. :D

I hope it is not New Orleans... Disney already has Port Orleans and Riverside plus Universal does Madi Gras. Would like them to revisit part of the Hyperion Wharf concept. A nice Lakeside park type of feel for part of DTD would be great.

;) I agree! Several people consider it just be a glorified open air mall. I disagree and I'm sure several of us will argue it does have that Disney feel! The Disney music, the smell of Ghiardelli like that of the Main Street Bakery, the twinkle lights in the trees etc.. If it is just a mall wish my local one was more like it.

Spring like a water spring? Hhhmmm...

Well, a relaxed shopping environment sounds....nice. Not exciting, but nice. I wonder if there will be people who would have preferred the Hyperion Wharf concept once all is revealed...

We must have some great open air malls locally. Because I can name two or three with a Ghiardelli and twinkling lights. And we're not even in a major city.

Great point. SOmething I've been noticing the last 5-6 years now. You see loads of people at DD, but most of them have few, if any, purchases. ... The last time I bought something there was either when they offered the B-Day promo and I got a gift card as an APer or when I used a friend's 50% off holiday discount.
I dont know if DTD has the same option as the parks, but maybe they just have purchases sent right to their hotel room (if they are on property)

Not sure where you live but I have a handfull of Open Air malls from Tampa to the Orlando area. They are nice but I would not consider them entertaining or have an ombiance that DTD does.

Yes
Are PI fans ever happy? That's not really a fair question.
oh come now, some of us are reasonable. I love the Splittsville idea, but I don't love a bunch of empty buildings. All I really want is a comedy venue and a dance club back, be it 8 trax or MDP, I don't care, but something with a consistent format. No more ADH perpetual wedding formats please. Beyond that, I don't really care, that's all I want.

And yet, despite the little details we get, I've never gotten a direct answer to my question of if there will be any dance clubs. Heck I'd be ok if they had a restaurant by day, dance club by night combo if it played MDP or 8-trax music.
