Trip Report Don't Touch My Mustache and Other Japanese Phrases

Konnichiwa! It's been just over a month since my husband and I returned from our wonderful 10 day trip to Japan. This was definitely the trip of a lifetime for both of us that took us on a journey to Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, and of course, the Tokyo Disney Resort. It was an adventure full of ups and more ups. I hope that each one of you enjoys this journey with me because I plan on detailing it all for you. I hope this trip will inspire all of you to broaden your Disney horizons and head over to the Land of the Rising Sun.

First though, if you are interested in how I did my planning (and yes, I did all of it on my own), check out my pre-trip report that is located here: http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/konnichiwa-yall-were-going-to-japan.884605/

The cast of characters for this trip was pretty simple. It was me (Rachel) and my husband (Jordan). I've gotten the question of what made me want to go to Japan quite a lot since we've gotten back. The truth is that my husband wanted to go. I always thought Japan would be neat to visit...eventually. There were a lot of other places on my bucket list to visit first, but last summer my husband convinced me to head over to Japan. He loves the culture and video games. So, while he chose the location, I made all the plans. By making the plans I became more and more excited about what waited for us across the Pacific. Plus, I kind of got to choose what we were going to do, which just so happened to be visit Tokyo Disney for two days.

Now I am very much a 'can't see the forest for the trees' type of person, and my husband doesn't even know a forest has trees half of the time. It works very well for us when we recognize each other's strengths and weaknesses. This trip turned out to be an excellent balance for us. When we left for Japan I had 8 typed pages of things to do in each city (that did not include my list of attractions at Tokyo Disney Resort), including train stops, addresses, cost, and descriptions of each site. While I am so glad that I had this list it actually caused me some anxiety. 'What if we don't do everything on the list? Which is the most important to me? To him? Why is nothing at the same train stop? Why does this book list this site in Central Tokyo but this book has it in Western Tokyo? Which ones are we going to on what days?' As much of a planner as I try to be, I just couldn't bring myself to piecing it all together on a map and detailing day by day what we were going to do. We were leaving with at least ideas of places to go, so I thought that surely that was good enough for now.

Monday, May 26

The night before we left I barely slept at all. I was so nervous and excited at the same time, which really just resulted in feeling restless, uneasiness, and just wanting to get on with it. I would almost liken it to the night before I got married, but I slept like a baby that night. My alarm went off at the horrible time of 4:30 AM. It really is a time that shouldn't exist, but fortunately adrenaline and excitement quickly kicked in for both of us. We were out the door by 5:30 AM for a 7:00 AM departure from Chattanooga. We only had an hour to get through security and our bags checked in Chattanooga, but I wasn't expecting any issues. In the scanner sometime suspicious showed up on my rear. I wanted to tell the TSA agent that it was just a wedgie, but she patted me down anyways. We flew from Chattanooga to Atlanta. We had a straight shot from Atlanta to Narita airport in Tokyo. However, once we arrived in Atlanta we had a five hour layover. We could have driven to Atlanta and back and half way there again during our layover time, but it was $50 more to fly out of Chattanooga and my parents were able to pick up my car. So off to the international terminal we sat and ate and lounged and paced and sat and ate until it was time to leave.

Our plane to Narita was definitely the largest plane either of us had ever been on, which is to be expected. However, I couldn't believe how crowded it was. When I chose our seats I googled the plane layout to see which seats were the best. The plane had a 3-4-3 layout of the seats, except in the back. As the plane narrowed in the back the seats changed to a 2-4-2 layout. I chose the first row of 2-4-2 seats. I'm so glad that I did! That meant that it was only Jordan and I together. Plus, we had about 2.5 feet between us and the window. It was just empty space. I was able to eventually put our stuff there instead of under the seats in front of us. Plus, it became my standing space when my legs couldn't take sitting anymore. I was just tall enough to fit right under the overhead compartment standing there. The only down side is that I didn't have a window to put my pillow against to sleep.

Here's us at takeoff. Sayonara, America!

TDR-1.jpg

Here's our extra space:

TDR-2.jpg

The takeoff was a bit of a bumpy ride. There was a lot of movement in the back of the plane, and it felt like it took awhile until the plane finally stopped fishtailing. Not long after we took off drink service started. Complimentary drinks, including alcohol, were offered for the flight. I asked for a glass of wine in hopes of getting to nap away that 4:30 wake up time. They were not stingy with the box wine on the plane. It didn't help though, so I went for the free entertainment. There was an impressive movie selection that would have definitely kept me occupied for the entire flight there and back. I opted for Monument's Men. It was okay. For such a wonderfully funny cast the humor felt forced and the timing was awful. Plus, it really shouldn't have been a comedy. The story is incredibly though.

Midway through the movie our first meal was served. I opted for beef stroganoff that was served with a salad, shrimp cocktail, a roll, and a brownie. I think the other option was chicken stir fry. The stroganoff wasn't took bad. It was heavy on the pepper but that didn't bother me. The brownie and roll however were not good.

TDR-3.jpg

Jordan asked for some sake with his meal. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but I was surprised by the size of the bottle.

TDR-4.jpg

I really didn't get much sleep on the 13 hour flight. I spent the rest of it by playing mahjong tiles, trying to sleep, listening to music, and watching Star Trek Into Darkness for the 2nd time (I just really liked it, and I think Jordan looks like Bones). About 5 hours after the first meal our snack was served, which was a small turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, and milano cookies. About an hour before we landed we were given breakfast. I had eggs, which were just not good. I didn't even make any notes on the breakfast. I drank orange juice. That's about all I remember.

Finally, we spotted land.

Awesome, awesome, awesome trip report! I love that the spectators remain respectful during the parade too. That is one of the reasons we have only seen Wishes 1X in all of our trips to WDW. I simply cannot abide the madness and poor manners of the crowd.

Well, hey there! I've had bar-b-que over on your side of the state several times. It was delicious. Unfortunately, the only time I've ever been to Beale Street was at night, and apparently I was too young to even walk down it.

After being there I would really love to go to Okinawa. I hope you can make it there too one day, especially with your grandmother. DisneySea was beyond incredible! I can't wait to get to that part of the trip. Thanks for following along![/QUOTE]

We do have some pretty good BBQ :hungry: However, you didn't miss much with Beale Street.. It's alright I guess lol. And yes I believe after 10pm if you are under 21 you are not allowed! Downtown is just not much fun at night. Honestly it scares me hahaha! I do like going to the Orpheum for shows and all the sporting events! (Grizzlies and Tigers and Redbirds, oh my!) and plus there are tons of great restaurants, but I avoid it at night if I can. Also Memphis in May is fun but it's always full of drunk people and that's just not my thing. Been to Music Fest and BBQ fest and I'm done with it all.

If you ever get a chance to come back, check out restaurants in Midtown, and also our zoo is fab!!

We've been talking about going to Chatt in October sometime, such a beautiful
Place! East TN is so much nicer than the west :)

And funny, being from Memphis, I've never set a foot inside Graceland... Driven past it, but it's not exactly in the greatest part of town..

This is just great!!!

Oh, thank you!

Love love love the report Rachel. I've been so excited waiting for this one. Two quick things from what you've discussed so far...that sushi looks so flipping yummy. Except the octopus. My husband would like it, but I'm not that adventurous with my sushi. And I almost started crying when I saw the waterfall features in front of Tomorrowland. I loved when WDW had those. One of my favorite pictures is of me and my dad standing in front of them at WDW. Can't wait for the rest of your report. What an exciting adventure.

Thank you so much! The sushi was amazing and that first night was honestly probably the worst that we had (still wonderful though). Trust me though, I ate the octopus in agreement that Jordan would eat a piece that looked equally as weird. I really wish that I had noticed how retro Tomorrowland was there. I would have been sure to take many more pictures of it for everyone!

Yeah, we were just talking about the prospect of food if we went over to Japan. I don't eat seafood, fish, etc. What would I do?!?! The food all looks fascinating but also a bit scary. Slightly on the not-appetizing side, really. I wonder what regulations there are for bringing prepackaged food like protein/granola bars and meal replacement shake mixes. Worst case, it'd be a great opportunity to drop some lbs. never a bad thing for me. LOL!

IASW is so colorful! I wanna see that! And Roger Rabbit! I loved that at DL! Is it pretty similar at TDL?

The parDe looked really cool!

I always wondered what was inside those disembodied alien head things. Great description!

Holy carp!!!! Dreamlights looks mind-numbing incredible!!!!

Okay, so the food. Now I am an adventurous eater, and I love fish. However, take my word for it: for every sushi place we found we passed 10 other restaurants on the way to the sushi. There were a lot of places with beef and chicken dishes. Also, ramen there is amazing! We never had anything that was unappetizing throughout our trip. And trust me on this: Jordan is such a picky eater! It amazes me that he loves sushi because he just won't try new things. We actually had a hamburger one day in Tokyo, and it was delicious! So, don't let the seafood freak you out. There are a lot of other options for food there. 9 out of 10 restaurants either had picture menus or food displays in the window. That was nice because it was never a surprise when we went in some place what kind of food it was going to be. Plus, nearly every convenience store sells pastries and whatnot that are very familiar here in the states. They also had salads there too. Not very exciting, but it's familiar!

IASW was beautiful! I want those murals on my wall. And yes, Roger Rabbit is exactly the same as it was in DL!

When you go, even though they look weird you have to try the disembodied alien heads. They did look freaky, but I could have eaten them all day.

Dreamlights was beautiful! I was so glad that we stayed for it.

oh my goodness the colors on those floats are amazing! I can't even imagine what they must look like in real life :) loving the TR

They were so vibrant and so very beautiful! I didn't get any other good photos of the genie, but that float was so neat.

TDO.... take some notes. ;)

Umm, yes! The people were so orderly there (a huge part of their culture), but I was super impressed with the CMs who told people to move if they got in someone's way who was already waiting for the parade. They also made sure that the people who were seated stay seated unless they were leaving.

Awesome, awesome, awesome trip report! I love that the spectators remain respectful during the parade too. That is one of the reasons we have only seen Wishes 1X in all of our trips to WDW. I simply cannot abide the madness and poor manners of the crowd.

Thank you very much! I can't comment how the crowds were during the castle show or during the fireworks, but the parades were a very enjoyable experience because of how everyone else acted during it. Even when we got there in the mornings before the parks opened everyone was orderly.

Dream Lights must be amazing to see in person. Your pictures are fantastic,Rachel!

Thank you very much! They were so beautiful and worth a trip to go and see.

I didn't think that I missed too much with Beale Street. I completely understand why downtown Memphis would be scary at night. Lol! I've wanted to go to Memphis in May a few times. We have Riverbend in Chattanooga in June, but Memphis in May seems to have much better acts there. I don't blame you about Graceland. That wouldn't be my thing. The zoo however is what I would love to see.

Chattanooga is pretty in October. Being in the valley the foliage around is very nice. The TN Aquarium is really nice too. Coolidge Park and the Northshore area are nice places to go to as well.

Thanks so much! No regrets on staying up for the parade. I do wish we had been able to stay up longer after that though. I loved Boo on Sully's back too. That was definitely one of my favorite parts!

So I really should have finished our night at Disneyland yesterday, but I was way too tired. So, please enjoy the following two photos of our first full day in Japan.

After Dream Lights we couldn't keep our eyes open any longer. We decided to go ahead and head out before the castle show and fireworks. That was definitely a regret of the trip. I'm sure we would have been able to see Once Upon a Time that night too. Jet lag hit us hard that night. As we were walking to the entrance I was able to get a picture of the castle at night. Crowds were already gathering around the castle for the show, but we had no difficulties navigating the crowds.

TDR-260.jpg

The Tokyo Disneyland Hotel was all lit up as we walked out.

TDR-262.jpg

There was a shuttle waiting for us at our bus stop when we got there. The shuttle was moderately crowded on the way back to the resort. A few people were standing, but it was nothing compared to the buses at WDW after a long day. Jordan and I both fell asleep on the bus. Fortunately, we didn't miss our stop as the bus went to our resort and its partner resort.

We got back to our room and crashed! I had to kick Jordan to get him out of bed to go and brush his teeth. We slept long and hard that night though. We were probably in bed by 10:00 with our alarms set for 7:00 the next morning. I wore a pedometer the entire time we were in Japan. I logged 9.1 miles for the day. The good news was that by the end of the day our legs were no longer swollen from a 13 hour flight!

Day 3, Thursday, May 29

We woke up 30 minutes before our alarm this morning. Ugh, 13 hour time difference was throwing off my ability to sleep like a champ. We were slooooooow moving this morning. However, jet lag was not an issue today nor for the rest of our trip. That was so nice! I couldn't believe that we adjusted so quickly, but we did.

We went downstairs and decided to opt for something else for breakfast because while the yogurt was good it was not filling enough to keep us going. Jordan went to the fridge section and picked up something that he saw the day before. I decided to try one too. We had no idea what we were getting. This was definitely going to be a surprise breakfast for us. The previous morning I had picked up green tea to drink. I love green tea and drink it every morning, but with one huge exception it is sweetened. Yeah, you can't find that in Japan. So, I stayed away from the green tea from then on, except when we didn't have a choice. Today was just good old fashioned water (the hotel didn't have orange water!). We paid for our breakfast and headed back out to our breakfast spot.

So, here was our breakfast:

TDR-263.jpg

The only thing I can tell you about what that wrapper says is the price. It was $1.

29. So, as you can see this is rice wrapped in seaweed. It was basically a sushi roll but in the shape of a triangle. On the inside mine had cooked salmon. Jordan picked up one with blue writing, and his had tuna mixed with mayo on the inside. He doesn't like mayo, so we switched. I liked them both. In fact this was our breakfast pretty much the rest of the trip. Other places would have basically what looked like hand rolls (sushi rolls that are not cut up) or sushi rounds. The rounds did not have any filling. They were basically rice with shredded seaweed mixed in or veggies (think taking fried rice and putting it in the shape of a circle). Some of the rolls and triangles were filled with eggs, veggies, chicken, or varieties of fish. We've discussed trying to figure out how to make those here and having those for breakfast. Considering I go back to work in 2 weeks I should probably start on that.

Instead of arriving to the gate an hour early this morning we got there about 15 minutes before park opening. The crowds were huge. Again, everything was orderly. People patiently waited in line, but the line was already backed up behind the ticket booths and security tables. We asked a CM walking around for a map in English. She didn't have any but told us we could get one inside the park. Interestingly once the park opened there were no kiosks with multi-lingual maps available. Another CM took us to Guest Relations to get a map. There was a line out the door, but CMs were positioned by the door to find out what people needed. When we just asked for a map the CM took us out of line, in through a side door, and went and got us a map. I was super pleased with that so we didn't have to wait in a long line just to ask for a map in English.

My attack plan for this morning was simple: get fps for Tower of Terror and then head straight for Journey to the Center of the Earth to get in the standby line. First though I just had to take a photo of this view:

TDR-264.jpg

We made it, and it was beautiful!

We took a left for the American Waterfront knowing that we were walking in the right direction we had the map folded up for the time being. It was packed. Jordan wanted me to get a picture of the crowds.

TDR-265.jpg

The path splits in the American Waterfront. A CM was standing at the split. I walked up to her and said, "Tower of Terror?" Then, I took one arm and pointed it straight ahead and took the other one and pointed it to the left. She pointed me in the right direction and off I went to grab a fastpass.

TDR-266.jpg

TDR-267.jpg

TDR-268.jpg

I grabbed these fps at 9:20. The return time was already at 11:50. This ride remained crowded all day long. So, when all of you go, your plan of attack is to either go straight here to get in standby or go straight here to grab a fastpass.

With our ToT fps in hand we rushed over to Mysterious Island (the volcano!) to catch Journey to the Center of the Earth. This was the ride that I was anticipating the most for our trip. The queue was really cool with lots of books and artifacts that you would likely find in the home of someone who wanted to take a journey to the center of the earth.

TDR-269.jpg

TDR-270.jpg

TDR-271.jpg

TDR-272.jpg

At one point during the line you are placed in an elevator that fits about 10. It takes you down probably a flight or two but the sound effects and wind blowing in the elevator makes it seem like you are traveling deep down into the ground.

TDR-273.jpg

TDR-274.jpg

After the elevator ride you are directed into another line to go into the loading area. It would be similar to the line at ToT after you exit the library in length.

TDR-275.jpg

TDR-276.jpg

The ride vehicle is two across and three deep. According to Tokyo DisneySea's website the ride reaches 75 km/h (roughly 46 mph).

My review of the ride. If the only thing that you want to know about the ride is that it was excellent then continue on to the next post. If you want to know what the ride was like keep reading below.

This ride was excellent! This was by far my favorite ride at Tokyo DisneySea. It was just a lot of fun. I had no idea what to expect going into the ride other than it was a thrill ride. You are harnessed in pretty well, which is a good indicator that something is coming. The ride itself was incredibly smooth. It takes you through various scenes of a brand new underground world. You will see underground crystals, giant mushrooms, water, and new creatures. At one point a storm, yes a storm, starts brewing underneath the earth's surface. A huge bolt of lightening shakes the vehicle and you speed off to find your vehicle stopped in front of a gigantic AA. The AA was a giant monster bug beast terrifying thing. That's at least what it looked like to me. It was really something to see. After the monster growls and moves at the sight of you being there clearly invading its territory, lucky for you the volcano erupts. Your vehicle goes speeding off up hill and sharply around turns until you explode out of the top of the volcano and down a hill towards the base. After a few more turns your vehicle slows to a stop and you find yourself bag at the loading area. We were seated in the very front on our first trip to the center of the earth, and it was great fun. This was really Disney theming at its best. The AAs were stunning. The colors were beautiful, and you really felt like you were being transported to a different place.

After Journey we explored the area a bit. I loved the theming here. It was very steampunkesque.

TDR-277.jpg

I'm not sure why there was a dock down to the sub. There was no way for us to get to it from what I could tell.

TDR-278.jpg

TDR-279.jpg

The ramp is actually the queue for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I'll get to that later.

TDR-280.jpg

TDR-281.jpg

Instead of heading back to the entrance and working our way through the park we walked on to Mermaid Lagoon.

TDR-282.jpg

TDR-283.jpg

TDR-284.jpg

This was Triton's Kingdom. We came back and explored this later. This area of the park was never very crowded.

We stopped in Port Discovery as some of the attractions there were on my to-do list.

TDR-288.jpg

Alright, so see the wall in the background with the water coming through on the right? Yeah, Tokyo Bay is on the other side of that wall. That was cool.

Our first stop in Port Discovery was Storm Rider. This was featured as a nanoblock in TDL.

TDR-289.jpg

TDR-290.jpg

We waited outside for around 10 minutes until we were shuffled in to the giant preshow area. This is a simulator that holds a lot of people. The premise is that the Japanese have discovered a new technology that allows pilots to fly into storms, shoot a device into the eye of the storm, and cause the storm to break apart and disappear. Lucky for us a storm was approaching, and we were lucky enough to be able to fly with the pilots to test out the new device. A CM was stood on a stage in the middle of the room and explained the technology with a prototype of the device. Fortunately there were screens around that had her script in English.

TDR-291.jpg

This simulator was a lot of fun. The theater held over 100 people. I was very impressed with the simulator considering that the theater was so large and held so many people. The ride starts out as you are soaring over the city. Big surprise things go wrong as we approach the storm. Our plane gets hit by lightening, the other plane gets hit by lightening. We all spiral out of control. The storm diffuser breaks loose from its holding after its been set to go off and ends up crashing through the ceiling of our plane. It came right through the top of the theater and caused water to splash down on us. The theater erupted in screams. It was so much fun to be on the ride with so many people. Jordan and I were laughing at everyone's reactions.

This area was not very crowded either so we headed over to Aquatopia. Aquatopia has a track system very similar to the one in Pooh's Hunny Hunt. It is a trackless system where the ride vehicles spin and intertwine seamlessly around one another. Your vehicle is placed in about 1.5 feet of water with fountains, spouting water, whirlpools, and rock formations. The ride vehicle holds between 2-3 with about 15 ride vehicles out on the course at all times. It is continuous motion, so the line moves fairly quickly. With the trackless ride system where your vehicle goes feels completely random. Each vehicle goes to different parts of the track, and you will not experience the entire ride in one sitting.

TDR-292.jpg

We saw a lot of crazy outfits while we were at Tokyo Disney. These were mild (for adults) in comparison to some others.

TDR-293.jpg

We both enjoyed Aquatopia, but Jordan loved it! I think he was so fascinated with the technology.

Afterwards we picked up some popcorn as a snack. We all know that Disney has popcorn, but TDL and TDS has flavored popcorn. The parks have different flavors with some overlapping ones. The carts do not have the same flavor at each stand. You can buy a refillable bucket for around $20 with refills for $5 or a small box for $3. We opted for just one box. We tried the strawberry popcorn. It was really yummy. It tasted like Captain Crunchberries.

TDR-294.jpg

The other flavors that we saw around were: sea salt, caramel, black pepper, milk tea, curry, some sort of lime cream soda flavor, and soy sauce. Those are the ones that I remember at least. If Jordan had known then how much he came to love milk tea, I'm sure we would have tried that one too. Strawberry was all we braved for this trip though.

We also saw Goofy out and about in some crazy costume. As you can see he was just walking around waiting for the crowds to come to him. The girls on the left of the photo approached him and then quickly ran away, regrouped, and seemed to be devising a plan of attack.

Once we had discovered Port Discovery we walked over to Lost River Delta.

TDR-297.jpg

Check out the name of the plane!

TDR-298.jpg

TDR-299.jpg

Mine and Jordan's favorite thing to do at WDW is explore World Showcase in Epcot. While we were planning our trip he asked if the Tokyo Disney Resort had a World Showcase. I told him that it didn't but all of the lands throughout DisneySea were the closest that they had. The theming throughout the park was immaculate! Each area of the park really immersed you into a new land.

One thing that I especially loved is that you could get a good, unobstructed photo of Indiana Jones Temple of the Crystal Skull.

TDR-300.jpg

TDR-301.jpg

We checked out the wait time for Indiana Jones, and it was listed at over an hour. At that point in the morning it was 11:10, and our fp return time for ToT started in 5 minutes. We walked over to the fp distribution for Indiana Jones, and the return time for fps being distributed was 11:50-12:50. Hmm, wait in line for an hour or come back in 40 minutes with a brand new fp in hand. We opted to walk around for 5 minutes until our ToT fp time started and then get our Indie fps.

Sadly, Raging Spirits was down for refurbishment. This is the only ride at the TDR that does a 360 loop.

TDR-302.jpg

TDR-303.jpg

We decided to continue the loop around TDS to make our way back to ToT. We ended up in Arabian Coast and decided to go and find Chandu!

TDR-304.jpg

We didn't ride Jasmine's Magic Carpets, but check out the peacock fountain up top. The tails were water. It was a really nice feature.
