Don and Deb do Disney

This trip gave us a much needed lift. Three months ago, we never imagined it could materialize. And as usual; I'm not going to bore you all with minute details; only highlights.
Wednesday, December 14: Our flight left at 10:50 and it was non-stop on SouthWest. Going through the airport was eery because it was empty (as opposed to pre-Katrina). It was our first time flying since 9/11 and security was definitely different this time. As we flew out of the New Orleans area; the area just amazed us. From the airport, through the Metairie area, there were many blue tarps, but green grass, and trees. From the Orleans parish line, all the way through Mississippi, the area was dead. Brown. Lifeless.
We arrived in Orlando an hour and 40 minutes later and were greeted by our Quicksilver driver, who was from.....Rodrigo and Tatiana...........Brasil! He took us to a 7-11 to get Coke and beer, but I got the impression maybe he didn't want to stop............?
We check in Port Orleans Riverside, and our room was in Alligator Bayou. Don seemed to like the resort and he liked the room. Only thing both of us didn't like was the fact we were in building 25, and it was a hike to the lobby. We unpacked and put up our lights in the windows. We were the only ones who did this and ours were purple, green, and gold. We decided to take a nap; we have been going virtually non-stop since Katrina hit. A 1 hour nap turned into three hours! I guess we needed it....... I got up, showered, made my face and hair up, and we headed to Wilderness Lodge to eat at Whispering Canyon. Don enjoyed the meal (I'd been there before). We then walked Downtown Disney and headed back to the room.........I forgot, Don pinched his sciatic nerve as we got out at the airport :(
Day 2 later..........I need to get the boys up for school.

Day 2

We slept in late; woke up at 7am. Got to Magic Kingdom around 9:30am to see a beautiful Main Street all decked out for Christmas! (as usual too). As soon as we walked in Town Square; the characters were still out and who do I spot? Wendy and Peter Pan! I've been nearly 30 times, since 1976, and I had never seen them. So, of course we stood in line to take a pic. As soon as my sister can download them for me; I'll post it. We decided this time to leisurely stroll Magic Kingdom, since we didn't have the boys who wanted ride this and that. We walked in all of the shops we wanted, rode what we wanted. Wait times were no more than 5 minutes. We headed back to our room to put on long pants and get a jacket for the MVMCP. We got there around 7 and as always, seeing Magic Kingdom at nite, decorated for Christmas, is the ultimate for me. This was our first time to do a special event, and I appreciated the limited crowds. Wishes started 5 minutes early and as soon as it finished......RAIN, and more heavy RAIN. We headed out and missed the parade, if one was held. Got to our room about 10:30pm.

Friday, Day 3

Slept in again........ate a very nice breakfast at Boatrights, then headed to MGM, did RocknRoller Coaster, Great Movie Ride, WWTB a Milliionaire, and started to watch the new stunt show, but Don's back was killing him, and mine was bothering me too. So we left and headed to a nice quiet seating area. Don kept bugging me to go to EPCOT and I was getting aggravated with him; knowing he couldn't walk 200 yards without stopping and stretching. We killed time and waited to see the Osborne lights. They were nice; but I still liked them on the Residential street. We then headed to check out the decor at the Monorail resorts and the game plan was to either eat at the Poly or Grand Floridian. As we headed on the monorail; we stopped at the TTC. People entered, and Don said "There's Johnna". I'm like, 'no, she would have told me if she were coming'. The monorail stops at the Poly, and by this time, I realize it is indeed her. We follow her out of the monorail and stop by them and wait for her to look up. The look on her face was priceless! Come to find out; she and Don had conspired to surprise me at EPCOT on Friday, but I wound up surprising her :). I hadn't seen her in eight years. This a very good friend of mine; we met on our honeymoons one marriage, and 15 years ago, on the Sovereign of the Seas. We talk once a month but never get to visit since she lives in California. Johnna is the one who posted a message for me right after Katrina hit. We visited for a while, went to eat at Kona, and went back to meet her on the beach to watch the fireworks. We wound up chatting in their room until late....but Don's surprise of this was better than any diamond he could have given me. What were the chances of she being in the same car on the monorail as us?

Day 4 ---Saturday

We headed to Epcot specifically to ride Soarin' and we had 12:50 lunch ressies at Le Cellier. Soarin' had a 50 minute wait posted, but it was less than that. We walked around for a while, spent alot of time in Mousegears, then got to a really nice lunch with a very nice waitress named Carla. Even the guy who seated us had a wonderful personality. After lunch we headed to Downtown Disney to meet up with Johnna; but as we were heading there, she called and said it was so crowded, that they were heading to POR to meet up with us. So I hurried and went to World of Disney and their Christmas shop and what do I find? 30% off selected Christmas merchandise! World of Disney gives an extra 10% off with the annual pass so WOO-HOO. I got the Santa Mickey cookie jar, the Mickey garland, and a set of lights, just to name a few. Since the weather was drizzly; I guess everyone went there? EPCOT's crowds were very minimal.
We then raced to POR and met up with my girlfriend, who wanted to show her mom and sis the room. POR is her favorite resort and the others had never seen it. They headed out, and Don and I headed back to EPCOT to catch Illuminations. Well, he was in pain, refused a wheelchair, and was messed up from all the pain pills. I left him on a bench outside the shop at the base of World Showcase, grabbed a Mocha Latte, and walked around World Showcase myself. When I got back, he was nodding off, and asked if we could leave. I was cussing under my breath while walking back to the bus................ . He could have stayed at the room and I would have been fine and even gone to check out the deco at the EPCOT resorts without him. And I could have spent more time with Johnna.

We must have passed right by each other. We started at the jungle cruise and worked our way around clockwise. We saw the rain predictions though, so we headed out around 3:00 and went to see King Kong.

Glad you were able to get away by yourselves for a great trip. Meeting up with one of your best friends?! :sohappy: What more could you ask for?

Sorry about the sciatica and bad back though, but at least you were together.

So, Debbie, how did you enjoy the beer? I'm sorry to hear about Don's back pain and I hope that it is something that can be resolved without additional meds.

I'm glad to hear you got such a great surprise by seeing your best friend! Don is a very thoughtful husband IMO. :xmas:

Amazing how his back and the shooting pain down his legs kept him from enjoying the parks like he wanted; yet it didn't hamper any of his OTHER honeymoon plans :lookaroun

he has already had a disc removed......and he's fine now that he is home. I'm going to make him train for the next time.......Maybe he needs to walk a couple miles a day?

As far as the beer.........we left 18 in the fridge at POR. I'm not one to pop a cold one before I retire for the evening and we didn't go hang out at the hot tub, where I would have enjoyed a few.

I didn't get to finish this as I needed to go fold clothes:

Highlights:
Getting met at baggage, going directly to my resort, and being picked up promptly and brought back to the airport. Worth every penny!
Our bellhop upon departure-Shawn-very nice guy and great personality
Cast members: 90% of the cast members we encountered were fun, friendly, and seemed to enjoy every guest they encounter. The other 10% weren't rude, just focused on their job; and that's OK too. Even the bag inspectors at the park entrances were cool with me. Heck, it makes me feel good just to have someone make eye contact and smile at me!

The highlight for me was getting to see my girlfriend, and seeing her at WDW made it all the more special!

Low Points:
many screaming toddlers on the busses at nite. Come 5 or 6, they are just pushed to the max, and can't go anymore. It reminded Don and I that we are too old to have another one.

We started the same way and did POC first! then the Mountains, HM, and Small World. I did look for you and your honey and son, and yes, I would have to have been very sure it was you before I made a fool of myself and approached the wrong person! I don't think I had anything distinctive on that you would remember me, had you passed me---only my hair. I left it down, and it's very thick, sort of long, and curly. Alot of people want to touch it for some reason?
Now, I'm really wanting to get something with WDWMagic on it for the next time I go. Every corner I turned, made me wonder if there was another member standing next to me and we just didn't know it. Maybe a pin that blinks at nite (like the ones you get from the beer merchandisers)? And is very colorful, and eye catching during the day?

I've still got to go through and post our photos from Thursday on my trip report in the PML. Maybe you'll be in the background of one of our shots.
