Doing laundry

It's inevitable that I will need to do 1-2 loads of laundry while we are in Disney. I think I read that it's $2 a load at Pop Century?? Does that mean $2 to wash and then $2 to dry? Are the washers and dryers big enough to cram 2 loads into one?

Also, does the laundry room ever close? I'd prefer to do it at night when everyone is sleeping (like 11ish).

hello we stay at the carribbean beach and it is $2 to wash and $2 to dry plus soap etc. for a family of 3 i needed 2 washers for a weeks worth of laundry and had 2 dryers that had to go through the drier at least twice before drying. a bit of advice though save the quarters you get throuout the week for change to do laundry.

I've never been to Pop Century, but I have done some laundry at WDW. Rather than buying detergent, etc. in the laundry room, I bring some from home. Just the other day, I saw small boxes of detergent at Target near the travel size items. I think it was enough for four loads. It was about the price of the detergent you buy in the laundry room for one load.

Yeh, and the last time we were there we went to do laundry the detergent dispensers did not even work so we had to go to the other side of the resort to another laundry to get the detergent. :fork: I was so angry since it was about 11:00 PM and we wanted to bed for an early rise.

This year I will bring some with us.

If you can bear to be an early riser on vacation, the laundry rooms are less crowded at 6 AM than at 1 AM. Some people have good luck doing laundry during swim time in the afternoon.

Yes, take detergent from home. I took Purex tablets.

Dont' know about Pop laundry, but at WL the washers were front loaders, and they only took half a tablet.

The dryers were slow slow slow. I ended up taking damp clothes to the room and hung them from every place I could imagine--chair backs, slightly open drawers, the bunk bed rails, etc. Most of it was dry by morning. Even if you don't want undies hanging on the backs of the chairs, you might consider hanging shirts in the room to dry.

I had a roll of quarters ready to take for laundry, but left them at home when I realized how heavy they were. Definitely hoard the quarters you get in change at the parks.

Wow I never thought that they'd be crowded, especially at 1 a.m.!! I didn't think many people did laundry on vacation. I'll be sure to bring a roll of quarters and some detergent with me. I wonder if I'd be better off saving all my laundry for when we get to the Holiday Inn on day 5 of our trip.

What a pain in the neck.

I pack for five, and I have to unpack for our family of five. Don gets to do any laundry at WDW!:D He doesn't mind though; he packs a cooler with a six pack and drinks for the boys, and does his thing. I always bring liquid detergent with us in case our little one would get 'car sick', or for me to pre-treat something. And we stop for a few rolls of quarters. It sounds like alot to pay, but not having to go home and take another day off to do clothes is worth it.
The one at the Polynesian was crowded (so he said), but the one I went to at the Contemporary Garden Wing was empty. The ones that were at the Villas at the Disney Institute were free!

We've done laundry at 7:00 AM at the Poly and have not had to worry about it being crowded. (I say we but I mean my cousin Laura did when we took the kids 2 years ago. She said it wasn't crowded.)

Maybe it's different with me driving down and all, but we will be down for a week when weather can be iffy (late November) and we plan on packing enough stuff so that we don't have to do laundry. I don't want to waist time doing that when I could be asleep or at the parks. In the Summer, with shors and t-shirts, I can't see the need to do laundry. Pack a couple of extra items and be done with it. If I run a shirt or something short - time for a souvenir.

Just my 2 cents.

I know that you may not want to do this but how about going to a laundromat off site? The dryers are usually good and it's cheeper too! Plus in the evening during the week, it may not be so crowded so you can do 3 or 4 loads at a time.

Of course this works best when driving or renting a car but it may be an option!

Also, US Air lowered their bag weight restriction to 45 pounds (it used to be 70)!!!

I guess the 4'10" 300 pound TSA lady can't lift much more than that!! I don't know about you but that crack staff of defenders of our airports scares the heck out of me!!

TSA - Thousands Standing Around (a former TSA employee told me that one!!)

Just got back from Pop Century and the washer and dryer are out by the main pool (I am sure there are others at the other pools). It's $2 for the washer and $2 for the dryer, $1 for soap. My husband and I do small loads every few days and pack less! It's 30 minutes for each cycle. So sit by the pool and have a nice relaxing drink while waiting for the clothes to finish. I liked the laundry room at Pop Century much better than the one at the Contemporary which was in the wings and kinda of confusing to find. Hey if you need someone to do the laundry for you so you don't waste anything time, I would be more than willing to tag along!!

Another factor re laundry is the daily rain.

The day it was so crowded at WL it had rained really hard for about 5 hours (the CMs at the turnstiles didn't bother stamping hands). Everyone was soaked and perhaps people who hadn't planned on doing laundry did it so that they didn't have to pack wet clothes.

Everyone says "stay on site, it's better, yada, yada, yada." They pay all that money to do so, and what to they do, laundry. Someone said that he/she didn't want to take an extra day at home to do laundry when they got back. I wouldn't want to do laundry during my vacation at a resort I paid good money to stay at. I agree with JBSLJames, I'd rather be in a park or sleeping.

I don't want to come off sounding mean here...but think at what you are saying.

Why don't you check into UPSing (or USPSing) your clothes down to the resort ? If you are flying, it's cheaper than paying extra money for an overweight suitcase. If you are driving, you don't overload the car.

I don't know if you have teenagers but believe me if you are there for one week or 3 days you NEED to do laundry. I actually find it a nice break from all the action and it gives me an excuse to sit by the pool alone!! We have gone to the world at least 15 times now and we didn't do the laundry the first couple of trips and quickly ran out of clothes!! It's a personal preference. I certainly wouldn't waste the time sleeping! Who sleeps in Disney??

Just got back from Pop! We did laundry twice! There are 3 different laundry centers at Pop (one by each pool). Bring your own detergent (like Tide tablets, Downey sheets, etc). and plenty of quarters $2 to wash (top loaders only one front loader available) and $2 to dry. they did have 8 washers and 12 dryers. I did laundry one day w/my mom early in the day while the kids were on a swimming break and it was completely empty. I did it one night arrived after 10pm and it took me 2 1/2 hours to get it done! But we had to do laundry 11 days with 6 kids & 6 adults...well, all airlines have limits on how much they let you take! ;)

I'd just like to say "Thanks a Lot" to the ding-dong who put muddy shoes in the dryer at the Swan of all places. Nothing like doing laundry and doing it all over again. At 3 AM.

Well, you could always make friends with someone at Old Key West (and I imagine WL and Saratoga timeshares) as they have laundries in the rooms...not sure if detergent is included.

And while you're waiting on the laundry, you can relax in the hot tub

Yes, they do provide detergent for your first load only.

Yeh, just sit in the whirlpool tub as the laundry is being done and either watching a DVD of my favorite Disney Movie or looking out over DTD. All in the Whirlpool. Laundry will be so tough this year. I hope I can handle it. :p
