Dogs like Disney too!

As many of us know....dogs do truly become a part of your family! So...when planning for a disney trip I was really discouraged to see that very little was offered for our furry friends.

I would like to take my dog with us to Disney...but at the same time, leaving him in a cage all night and for the majority of the day...is not really appealing to me. I know FW does offer "pet loops" but we weren't planning on camping/RVing.
PetsMart runs the PETS HOTEL...but if your not going to rent a car thats not really an option...since you won't get to see them that often!

So...my plan...or I should say quesiton...
"How come disney hasn't made a pet friendly RESORT?"
(I know I shouldn't even be talking about Disney building another resort...but I just thought I'd throw the idea out there)

Heres what I'm thinking....

- A country/farmish setting...very rustic and natural
- A mix between the moderates and villas
- themed dog beds in every room for dog
- neatly fenced-in areas for outside play off leash
- possible lake for doggie swimming
- lots of walking trails
- PLENTY of plastic bags for the "clean-up"
- Large barn (to go with theme) for kennel use, grooming, and "day-camp"...similar to what PetsHotel offers
- Pet and kid-friendly accomidations
- Evening activities, like "the Barkin'-BBQ" (cute eh?)

Obviously this can't be a 1,000+ room resort...but maybe a nice small resort that famlies with pets could enjoy and a resort the dogs would enjoy too...you wouldn't have to nessecarly stay at the resort to use the kennel and day camp either...and the resort mascot would of course be Pluto! Also people w/o pets could stay too...there could be a section designated as a pet free zone.
*My only issue so far has been the best way to design the rooms to prevent the least amount of damage to furniture and carpet from the dogs*

Rules would of course be in place...
- Dogs must remain on leash, unless in "designated areas"
- Owners must scoop up after thier dogs to enure a clean propperty
- No dogs in pool area/eating facilities
- All vacinations must be present to ensure safety of guests and other dogs

It seems like a smart move to me...especially these days when people are dropping money left and right to please there new companions. Why should going on vacation be any different!

Thanks for reading! Go ahead and post your ideas as well! I just wanted to finally get my idea down!

We love our dog and cat. We have someone come in and check the cat, make sure he has food and water. The dog goes to a kennel. She gets attention and they take her out to play and "whatnot". The cat is happy when everyone is gone. He gets to lay on the floor where there isn't a big dog jumping in his guts or trying to play with him and my daughter isn't trying to "save " him from her. BUT, I would not take them with us. It would just be too much to have to go and walk her. When we get to Disney, our minds go blank. I think owners and pets need a vacation from each other as well.

We hire a pet sitter that comes to the house 2x's a day, feed the dog, the cats, the fish, waters my tomatoe plants, gets the mail and makes sure all is ok in the house.
I have used this kid for a couple of years now and it is less expensive and stressful than placing Chewie (a Peke adopted at the Humane society) in a kennel for much much more per day than a pet sitter.
That is what we do, too. I have two Maltese babies. One is over 12 years old and has VERY bad arthritis and can not be left in a kennel. He can not walk or even stand in those cages. We usually get someone ( a responsible college student, usually) to come stay at our house. We get a student from our church that we know is a good, responsible person. That is the only way we get to go to WDW or New Orleans (our 3rd favorite vacation place...only 3 hours away). When we go to Gatlinburg (our 2nd favorite vacation place) we take them with us. We have those neat pet purses that they can stick there head out of. They LOVE those bags and get very excited when they see us take them out of the closet. That is what has worked out best for us and our pets.

Now, all that said, I would definitely LOVE to see a pet-friendly resort at WDW. I night would go more often if we could take them with us.

We've got 2 dogs, an Australian Shepherd that is very shy & is afraid of strangers, and a Pit Bull X Lab that LOVES everyone & thinks she's the center of the universe, and doesn't understand when she's not being paid attention to... so I don't think either of my dogs would do well. My Aussie is happier NOT coming, and the other one... well, let's just say everyone else in the world is happier that she's not coming!
    Cute post!

You mean dogs AREN'T the center of the universe???????? Better keep that quiet. If my dogs, Max and Annabelle here that, they may stage a protest/war or something of that nature! They thing they are the most important beings on this earth.

I agree with others that a dog hotel just wouldn't work, as much as I like the idea. People just wouldn't follow the rules, and one person can ruin something for everyone.
Next year will be the first year my dog goes to Disney with me. He won't be staying in a kennel, I know he'd be able to handle staying there, but as he's my service dog, he's coming with me to the hotel/parks. Personally I can't wait, and I think this is going to be the best trip to Disney for me, since my little one will be there to help me out, which should make it very enjoyable.
I also however like the idea of petsitters when people have to either kennel their dog or leave it home. I used to dogsit, and it so fun!!! I was supposed to go over twice a day to walk the dog, feed it, give it water and play, and I usually ended up there three or four times, golden retreivers are so cute :D

Not sure when you are going, but, I have seen some service dogs that look absolutely miserable with the heat and hot pavement at the parks. I have also seen them "relieve" themselves and the owner and dog just walk off. I am sure you are aware of these issues, but, do hope that you take a water bowl with you and something for those tender paw pads. I have no doubt you will clean up after the dog, should the need arise. Not sure if you have checked out Deb's site, but, here is the link, just in case. :) http://allearsnet.com/pl/service.htm

Hard Rock Hotel Luvs Doggies!

From what it says on the website, it seems that all Universal Orlando Resorts are pet friendly. None of Disney's Resorts are pet friendly. It would make sense for Disney to add a pet friendly resort since Universal Orlando has them.

We stayed at Hard Rock Hotel for part of our honeymoon and were amazed at all they do for pets! You could order room service off a pet menu, there were pet supplies in the mini bar, and if I remember correctly there were even spa services for pets. There were large outdoor areas where owners were walking and playing with dogs- it was really nice to see!

If you want to bring your dog to Disney, but don't want to leave them in the kennels you should try Bass Pet Hotel. They are the best in the city & priced well!

Some one did show me that site, and it was quite helpful. I plan to go from late June to early July.
I am a bit worried about him with the heat, I'm quite used to it, I used to live in Florida (and can't wait until I'm old enough to move back), and was always outside in the summertime. He's never been to Florida, and so has never gotten a taste of the humidity and heat down there (I love it :D ). I have a dog back pack (similar to the baby carriers that people have that the baby is in front of them like a reverse backpack), so if I think it's too hard for him to walk all day on the pavement, I can put him in that for a little while. He only weighs about seven pounds, but even so, I need him walking most of the day both to help me out and because I have a bad back and can't carry him for too long.
This trip will be my first time going anywhere by myself. I can't wait :)

i came up with an idea similar to this awhile back. i hate the idea of leaving my babies in a kennel for days or leaving them at home with their aunt amber staying here the entire time looking after them. i had wished there was a disney hotel.. done in "dogs if disney" theme.. during the day they could go to the doggy day spa and get groomed.. have doggie day care activities like retrieving, swimming in their own doggy pool, or snoozing or doing whatever they like (lol i dont mean like dogs gone wild or anything! I mean what activities your dog likes doing. if you suggested retrieving to my saint he'll look at you like youre from mars, turn around, give you the cold rump for even suggesting it, and go back to sleep). seperate them into small groups with a CM or 2 per group and let them rotate for activities & all...when you're done for the day go pick up your baby and get to spend the nights together w/ them in the room. i dont think it'd appeal to non-dog owners because it'd pretty much be geared specifically towards dog owners. pergo the floors.. keep plenty of mess bags all over the grounds & in the rooms... i even thought a nice "back yard" of sorts per room would be nice. all ground floor rooms w/ a small patio for pre-bedtime potty breaks w/o having to get dressed and haul your stove up & sore body down to the grounds for a walk. picking up the mess of course and putting it in the room's diaper genie maybe? LOL all dogs would have to have their shots & all of the good stuff. i honestly don't think there would be much of a problem. the people who would want to come to this resort would be the kind of responsible dog owners who really keep their dog's health in top condition and their shots up to date & their heartworm meds/flea tick drops given on time... they wouldn't bring a dog thats aggressive towards other dogs because they're responsible pet owners..i would love this idea. i would love to be able to take my hagrid with us. he wouldn't want to do more but sleep all day long. lol gotta love lazy saint bernards!!!

I love the idea... and I really love the idea of having the kennels in the resorts. That would be so much easier! We took our kitten with us when we went in March. She wasn't crazy about the kennel, let me tell you! She was about 6 months old and the staff loved her! They would take her out and let her play in the kitty room and she would run around and play with balls on the floor. BUT, it is where she started meowing. She was never a vocal cat but she meow for a while when she left there. (my heart was broken the first time I came into the kennel to visit her and she started to meow!!) ... we brought a lease and took her out twice a day for about an hour each time. She loved that part!!!

We had wet food that we brought with us for her and we found after the 7th day that one of the staff members was not feeding her! They were just giving her dry food!! (she was always sick so we pampered her with wet food, she is over that now) ... so we were upset about that ... (we just came in and fed her ourselves rather then make a fuss)

The hotel would be awesome, but I would never take my dog there just in case. God forbid he would bite someone (he never would, he is a peach... but he is a german shepard and people get scared of him and it excites him so he starts jumping and trying to play) ... I would never ever ever want to be sued by a resort guest who got niped or knocked over by my dog.. and I am sure the suits at Disney would say the EXACT same thing. Everything is a liability and it is not worth the risk for me. Wonderful idea though!!!

I have a 5 pound chihuahua who doesn't bite and loves people that I want to bring with us to disney. The problem is she is spoiled, doesn't like to be left alone. She was my dad's dog but he brought her over to us and never got her back after he got married to Cruella De Ville. He said he would take her for a week in august when we go to disney. I'm not going to let that happen because Cruella has a hyper 7 year old son who will hurt her. I'd rather stay home and miss the trip to disney than let him take her. The kennel idea won't work because she sleeps in the bed with me and cannot go to sleep unless she's by my side. i don't know what to do. There is nobody else who can watch her while we are gone except him and he is NOT watching her for a week.

Boo's Mom--your post illustrates exactly why pet ownership is a responsibility.

You have made choices in your ownership of this animal (letting it sleep with you, never leaving it alone, etc) that affect every part of your life.

If a kennel or having your Dad dog-sit are unacceptable to you, then you are correct in staying home with the dog. Skipping a trip to WDW is a sacrifice you must make for your pet.

My Coda is only nine months and four days, and in seven days it'll be the third time I've left him in a kennel.

Nevertheless, it never gets any easier and I cry every time.

HOWEVER... I would NOT drag my dog all the way from Calgary, Canada to Florida. I consider myself a better owner then that, and would be driving myself crazy worrying about him. I would never be able to put my dog in one of those tiny crates and have him all alone in the plane... the thought of it makes me shudder.

So the hotel is a good idea, but only for those of you who have a short drive to Disney (or live in Florida) and really think you'll die without your animals.

Trust me, I know pets require a lot of responsibility. I've cared for over 200 pets at one time. (birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, dog, fish) The Kennel choice is not unacceptable to me, just that she would not take staying in overnight too well. She also wouldn't like it if we kept her in the kennel for a week and us go see her then leave her there. She stayed overnight at the vets when she got spayed and when she got home, after the woozyness from the surgery went away, she didn't leave our side for 3 days.
Now having my dad take her is another story. He doesn't care about anything right now and he would let that 7 year old hurt her. She already has two bad knees. The choices I have are bringing her with me or letting my dad take her. I'm willing to make the sacrifice. If it came down to selling everything I had to keep my pets I would do that. When it comes to my pets or any animal for that matter, their well-being comes first. I've made many sacrifices for my animals, they come first before anything.
Animal abuse is one thing I will not tolerate and I will personally kill anybody if they abused my animals no matter what the consequences are. Noel would get abused over at my dad's house. There is a hyper brat who has no control and nobody to correct him when he is wrong and he will hurt her because he is way too rough, "Cruella De Ville" who, and I wouldn't put it past her, would smack her if Noel barked too much or if she had an accident. My dad wouldn't pay much attention to her, plus she doesn't like those people, that is why she is with me. Noel is used to being babyed (sp?) as is Boo. If you can't spoil them why have them.

I love the responsibility of having pets more than anything in the world.
If I won the lottery, I'd have pets galore. I'd open up my own kennel and help ease the crowding of the shelters her in Virginia. I love dogs and birds and rabbits and guinea pigs, (basically anything but snakes). I'd rather have animals then kids. I'm definately an animal person. If I couldn't have kids that wouldn't bother me and if I never get married that wouldn't bother me. I love my animals. I guess you could call me an animal nut

I've found a hotel that accepts small pets. Its a mile from Downtown Disney and has bus transportation to the parks (only problem is its not the official Disney busses but those luxury busses which normally have a lot of restrictions on them..or at least they did when my aunt and grandmother went years ago) http://reservations.pet-friendly-ho...l?ses=70a64bd7f41b09157921c040088281ba55726ps

not that expensive either. its $500 cheaper than our current choice for hotel on disney property but the only problem as mentioned before is the bus transportation (not that good from what I've heard)

Sounds like we're two peas in a pod. I feel the same way. I'm thankful we've got a close friend who enjoys coming over and staying the entire time we're gone. She is still living at home to finish school so any opportunity she can get away from the house for a mini-vacation, she's all for it. She likes our babies on top of that. I trust her with them. It's nice because they don't have to leave home or get out of their normal routine. We leave Aunt Amber the schedule (lol even though she's over so much she already knows it) and she's friendly with Kirk's mom, so she's got contact info handy. Leave the fridge stocked w/ stuff we know Amber likes and fresh batteries in the remote and she's good to go. She'll leave to go to work or wherever she needs to go but it's like a vacation for her. We're *really* lucky. LOL ALTHOUGH That doesn't change the fact I'm going to miss them incredibly. I just wish I could take my Hagrid to cuddle up with it at night. I'm gonna miss that sweet face when we go for a week!

If the bus trans. bothers you, rent a car, with the savings over your current choice, a car could be a good choice.

That theory is probably why you don't want to leave your pet with that child.
The mother's thought on children is probably identical to your thoughts on pets.

I don't want to leave Noel with that kid because he has no guidence no control, nobody to watch over him. His mother is too busy, well lets say she is only out for herself. She has 5 kids by three different fathers, 40 years old and on her 4th marriage. She doesn't care about her kids. This boy is 7 years old, doesn't go to school and bonds with complete strangers as soon as he meets them. He is neglected and obnoxious (although it isn't his fault). He has nobody to correct him when he is wrong. I don't trust any of my animals around any of those people. My dad doesn't care about anything anymore, he's not the same person and he would negelect Noel that whole week and I'm not having that. My dad wants to get Noel back but if I have to take him to court to keep her then so be it. He hasn't done anything with her in 4 months now and my grandmother has payed all of Noel's vet bills since we got her 2 years ago. I'm only looking out for Noel's best interest and it would be better for her to stay with us. Trust me, if you knew the whole situation regarding Noel and my dad and his new family, you wouldn't want her staying there either
