Does online check-in hurt chances of upgrade?

I know upgrades are a long shot anyways, but my plan was to check into the WL on Saturday night and see if there were any Club Level rooms available, maybe use some puppy dog eyes, etc. If we do on-line check in, is our room assigned right on the spot?

I think it does hurt to ask. I've been told that CM don't like folks asking for a free upgrade. And they see right through the puppy dog eyes thing.

I've never actually asked for an upgrade at check in, but in answer to your question, I do not think that checking in online hurts your chances of an upgrade... We did online check in for the AKL in December. We were booked in a standard room and were upgraded to a Savannah view when we checked in.

By policy if you ask for an upgrade and it is available you will be charged for it.

I have used online check in ever since it was introduced and the frequency of free upgrades seems to be rather consistent with what I experienced prior to online check in.

We were booked for a standard room at CBR in September 2009 & did online check-in. When we showed up at the online check-in line, we found out that we had been upgraded to a Preferred Room.

Doesn't matter much anyways. Their online system is down again. It was down this weekend when I tried to check in as well.

Maybe someday when Disney gets to be a big company, they'll be able to afford a real IT department to deal with their embarrassing website.

I dont know how it would affect the chances of a upgrade, but I like the Partaree Place building at POR and always request it. I would say about 95% of the time I get it but if I dont I always aks "is there any chance we could be in the......" you get the picture. The one time I did the online checkin we were in Alligator Bayou and when I asked I was told that the room keys and all your check in materials are preprinted earlier that day and they were not allowed to make changes to anything. So I no longer do it.....

Sounds to me like this was the CM's way of saying "I don't want to mess with changing it." There are posts all over the Disboards resorts forum about CM's allowing people to change locations even though they used online check-in.

I believe they can change the room number associated with the room keys without reprinting them - I believe they just need to swipe them at their terminal.

I'm sure a CM here could confirm.

Used online check-in for our Jan. 12 arrival. Upon check-in, our materials and keys were all waiting in the package for us, but DH asked if there were any king bed rooms available. They gave us a complimentary upgrade to a preferred room and did everything on the computer right there...swiped the key cards again and we were off.

I use online checkin every time and have been upgraded 4 out of 5 times before even arriving.

By the way, you chances of being automatically upgraded are significantly higher if you are a single traveller or if you have two adults traveling together with no children... And most importantly if you are a Frequent Visitor at one particular resort over and over again.

Ironically, I usually prefer Not getting upgraded. I always stay at French Quarter. When they upgrade you one ends up at one of the two most remote buildings on the third floor despite a water view.

We'll see. There's just 2 adults going this time, and it will be our 5th time staying at the Wilderness Lodge.

FTR - Still can't do online check-in. This is today's message:
