Does it bother anyone else that Avatar isn't a Disney movie?

Nice post, yeah how in the world the Jungle Book never got an attraction at AK is puzzling. And you are right, Winnie and Snow White were popularized by Disney. Even the animated Robin Hood certainly isn't something that came out of Walt's mind, but it was a Disney movie made by them. I am not sure if Dumbo was Walt's own or not, can't remember, but if it wasn't then there is another example of a story that came to life because of Disney.

Can't say that about Avatar and it bothers me a bit.
They had a show, Journey to the Jungle Book, that ran for about a year. It was replaced with Tarzan Rocks.

Avatar is a billion dollar franchise, Disney is lucky to have it.

Avatar is not a franchise.

The term is so overused now, but even under the "new" definition (i.e. a movie with a sequel) it still does not qualify (as the second film is a half-decade away).

Franchise in the entertainment industry actually traditionally means a filmed product that transcends into other venues; a movie that spawns a TV show and a comic book, for example. Or a film that leads to a mostly unrelated film on the strength of the concept (say, a horror sequel series).

So far, Avatar is just one film. No ancillary products to speak of, only the promise of another film. All that said, Cameron has saddled himself with a terrible name - Avatar is such a general use word these days, not to mention an actual franchise with the same name (that Air Bender thing), which really limits that transcendence.

I think its a big mistake to bring in another new land that is not completely Disney. Seems to me that with the introduction of the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive game Disney has made a strong entry into the Harry Potter world. Not that it is HP at all, but the concept is similar. You're becoming a sorcerer, going through the training and your spells get better and more powerful as time goes on. Obviously the concept is hot right now, especially with boys. Why don't they build on that concept and create a Fantasia type of land? They created the movie, it's based on a sorcerer theme. Have the entrance be the giant hat from Hollywood Studios, thereby fixing that whole issue that people hate it because it ruins the original view down the street. Once you enter on one side of the land there are the villians, and the other has the heroes. Multiple story lines available since each movie tends to have more than one so-called heroic character. With the interactive technology Disney could continually create new story lines that see the characters evolving. So many Disney fans like the villians as much as the heroes. Put all sorts of next gen teachnology in this land so it will never really get old and do direct battle with HP world over there in Universal.

I agree that it is a bad idea. I do like though that Disney is adding to the more mythological side of Animal Kingdom. I wish that they would have come up with a more original idea. But watch Disney will add there magic touch and make everyone eat their words.

imho....my whole family agrees it doesn't belong, and wished Imagineering could make it more disney specific themed...towards a general theme like the original mythology take planned....mix in some fantasia/silly symphonies SOMETHING to remind us of Disney magic....we have not watched movie and my children say they are a bit curious but plan to boycott avatarland altogether. Wishing I could go visit Carsland though this summer!!!:king:

I wish Disney would change their mind about doing Avatarland. A entire land that is themed to it is too much for a non-Disney movie. I think a land themed after Wonderland would be fun. There are just so many Disney posibilities they could go with.

I tried to watch Avatar after hearing about its place in AK. Sadly, I couldn't watch the entire movie because I was too bored with it.

100% here too guys and gals!
A whole land!? Just not enough to keep this Disney nut interested. Even if it is the biggest grossing movie ever.
Unfortuntely I raised my opposition about this in another thread and pretty much got bashed for it. Nice to know there are others here that are 'crazy' like me.

You weren't "bashed" for it, some others simply disagreed with you.

And for Avatar, I'll wait and see what ideas they come up with first for the new area. But as for the movie not being Disney, there's plenty of examples of other movies preceding it that weren't Disney either.

Nope. It sucked.

Unpopular opinion, but mehhh:shrug:

No, as you can see, many agree with you.

But the "OMG BESTEST MOVIE EVAH!" folks just can't be reasoned with, so most of us have given up talking about it. The fact is, the general public has already pretty much forgotten about it (the film) and most of the teenagers who are ga ga over it will be interested in things like girls and college and jobs by the time the next one comes 'round in five years.

It doesn't bother me that they picked Avatar over a Disney franchise, what bothers me is that there are so many great rides they could start building tomorrow that the development has already been done for - some of the TDS attractions, for instance.

But instead, they went for a flashy grab to get a few headlines to try to boost up the stock/shareholders. Just like FLE as a "response" to Potter, it's too little, too late. (As much as I love FLE - and I would have picked that spot out of any in WDW to expand, it's simply nothing to the extent that Potter was.)

Disney clearly only wants what the parks to do what they can for them, and not what they can do for the parks. The last large scale attraction they built was a creative/technical failure (depending on your opinion, the fact is it's "centerpiece" is broken, no matter what your belief in general about it is) and they still cheaped out on parts of that.

Disney simply does not seem interested in being the leader in innovative, immersive experiences. And this comes from someone who cannot wait for TLM or the Mine Train - but neither of them are the next Haunted Mansion or POTC. I honestly think those days are behind us.

Yeah definatly! I kind of feel like people were talking more about the effects then the actual movie anyway.

I've seen some artistic ideas for the Avatar area. But it is really just in the throw stuff on the wall and see if it looks good: brain storming stage. Don't think anything I have seen will be there. I give it a 50/50 shot at coming to fruition. If the second movie is never made, it will not happen. The situation is too closely tied to that.

The biggest problem is the lack of a big Disney project that could fill the need in this park and be something that can attract attention. You're not going to see a Robin Hood or Rescuers based attraction. Just not a big following. Lion King? Maybe. But Disney also wants a partner, a financial partner. But you do need something that is not going to be based on live animals. You need something that can stay open at night. Avatarland offers the possibility of those night time experiences that make other Disney parks so appealing after dark.

I don't have a problem with using Avatar. Just not sure that there is enough an experience to create what is needed, though.
