On our last trip DD was 11 and really didn't complain about meeting the characters. We did Chef Mickeys and Crystal Palace and DD got autographs and posed for pics with all the characters. I'm not sure if she was willing to do this because her cousins (ages 9 & 8) and her little brother (age 6 ) were all doing it. We also had a little talk before the trip, I explained to her that when she was little we waited in tons of lines for her to meet the characters and did the character meals so, even if she wasn't into it she needed to remember that her brother deserved the same chance to meet the characters. She never objected and even posed for pics with her brother and the Power Rangers.
Our 12 year old does not like meeting characters at all, but our 16 year old loves to meet them especially Tinker-Bell. For the 12 year old we try to get family photos with the characters he loves. But the best photo we have of him is when he was laughing his head off a the rest of us with taking a photo with a character, the CM turned around and took the most beautiful photo of him by himself.
I think some kids hit the teen years and pull back a little thinking they're too old for little kid stuff like character meets but you know your child best. Maybe a trade off like don't do more than one character meet on a given day and ask her in exchange to pick something she really wants to do like pick where you book dinner or another ride/show. My soon to be 13 year old granddaughter still does them happily but we often travel with my sister's family and my 9 year old niece (who thinks she's 15) occasionally goes through the "that's for babies" phase. We don't force anything so we compromise with not booking a bunch of something that the tween doesn't want to do but we don't completely skip them either. When my niece doesn't want to do a character meet she stands in line with us and if she doesn't want to be in the pics/see the character we just let her watch. Usually by the time we're there she just does it anyway but not always. We've found the more we pushed her the more she dug her heels in. My own kids now 27 (daughter) and 32 (son) always had me juggling because of the age difference and one being a boy and one a girl. We did a lot of character meals when my son was about 10-13 to accommodate my youngest. It worked for us.
My 13 year old rolls her eyes at me, but we still do character meet and greets!! I was there alone a couple of months ago and did a ton of them by myself!!
Hello. 15 year old here. On my choir Disney Trip last April (which is full of high school kids from Freshman to Seniors since the choir class is mixed) we were all excited to see the characters! I remember we saw Mary Poppins, and they were talking and joking about it all day. Even mos tof the Senior boys who were trying to look cool got excited. All of us girls got excited. Maybe it's just cause we're all nerds or something, but no one seemed to really hate it. Children will of course, go through thst phase where they're tooo old to do anything. Eventually they'll grow out of it, most likely. Trust me, when I was around 10 I thought I was too old and too cool to do that. But now as a teen surrounded by a bunch of other teens, we seemed to appeciate it more. It just makes us feel part of the magic, and since a lot of them were senoirs, it was that one time they could let their guard down and act like a little kid before moving on to adulthood soon. Although I have a phobia of fur characters (don't know why) ny excuse is never because I'm too old. (Plus, I have my baby sister who takes after me and absolutely loves Disney and loves to meet the characters to cover me lol)
My daughter will not take pictures with characters. She says there just people wearing costumes, why would I take a picture with a stranger?? Can't fool this kid. Loves WDW, hates the characters.
Our girls are 16 & 13, in November, they got every character they could get to for photos & autographs. I thought my days of chasing Princesses were over. I was wrong...
