Do they drain the water from Splash and POTC at night?

I noticed that the main water source is a large tank behing Splash for these two attractions. Do they empty the water from the rides each night and fill the tank back up? or does the water just sit in place with the movement and drops turned off?

Can you imagine how long that would take to drain an entire attraction then fill it up again? An average pool takes 8 or more hours to fill. Would be cool but it doesn't happen unfortuneately.

It happens more often than you'd think. When I worked at splash I can't tell you how many times there wouldn't be water in the part outside of the mountain after closing. The pumps they have, I'm sure can fill that thing in a very short period of time. Think about catastrophe canyon, and how fast and often all that water comes. I've seen the rapid ride at our local six flags fill. It takes like 5 minutes if I remember correctly. I was certified to run that ride back in 1999. In comparison, most people fill a swimming pool with a normal garden hose or something, not elaborate water pumps.

Pirates probably is not drained very often, but I wouldn't really know for sure. I just worked in splash merchandise.

Actually in case of an emergency the entire Splash Mountain can be drained in just over 2 minutes. Once They open the gates and turn on the pumps it happens rather quickly. The water poors into a huge tank backstage, they show this tank in the WDW special on the Travel Channel.

It would take way to long to re-fill the rides with all that water if they drained it every night. When we got our pool it took us 3 days to fill that all the way... of course disney would have better means to fill the rides with than a regular garden hose.... :hammer:

Does anyone know how deep the waterways are at POTC and Splash?
Thanks

Dan

Again, not sure about POTC.

But Splash varies depending on the section of the ride. Some parts are fairly shallow, like a couple of feet. Other sections are pretty deep, more like 8 feet (I think). It's funny to see it drained and the logs resting on the concrete, much lower than they normally would be. Yes, they do drain it fairly often. They have the capabilities to drain and refill pretty quickly because of the water pump system they have installed. Not saying it is every night, but fairly often. (It may be every night I don't know. Some nights it was drained when I'd get off work, others it wouldn't be)

With POTC, you can see the floor through the water during the entire ride, so it's gotta be something like 2 or 2.5 ft. deep, but that's just a guess. I'm sure someone else can give a more accurate response.

When they shut down the pumps at Splash Mt, which they do every night as part of the normal shutdown. Most of the water drains back to the reservoir because of normal gravity flow. Not all of the flume drains though, the lower portions still have water in them, it would take quite a while to completely empty the flume.

It must be really weird to see Splash Mountain empty, and the AAs stopped, or in that "night mode"... I think I would be really scared to go inside... :lookaroun

now that she mentioned it, I know that we've talked about Dinosaur AA's going into night mode but what about AA's at POTC and Splash?

Ummmmm....nope.

The water in Splash does indeed vary, but not that much. The average depth of the trough is 18 inches for most of the ride. The deeper parts are at load and the base of the big lift (lift 3). At load it stays around 30 inches, and goes as deep as 48 inches at the base of the big lift.

Pirates has an average depth of 2 feet, maybe a bit more at the drop and lift.

Thanks for the correction. That's what I thought I'd heard when I worked there, but I must have remembered incorrectly. Sorry for giving bad information.

I know I am late with this but I would not think so. I also know that WDW has the money to spend but my gosh (to me) what a waste of money dont give me wrong I know that it has to be changed every once inawhile at least but every night.

Well we're not talking really about "changing" the water but just refilling. There's an enormous water tank behing Splash Mountain that is used to contain the water for PoTC and Splash. I was just wondering if the pumps were turned off and the water pumped back into the resivior at night for various reasons.

The reservoir behind Splash is for Splash only. POTC has a separate water system.
Most of the water is drained for maintenance inspections of the flume and lifts.
Then in the early morning they restart the ride and cycle all the logs to do inspections on them also.
