Do not post on the internet when you will be away from home.

I don't entirely disagree, but...

It's also reasonable to have a monitored alarm system and someone you trust to check on your house regularly. I have both and neighbourhood watch is keeping an eye out as well.

Good insurance doesn't hurt either!

I freely post that I am not going to be home on the forums and on Facebook. My brother house sits for me and if someone wants to break into my home then they're welcome to give it a shot because we both carry a handgun and I can gaurantee you, we will give it a shot. ;) But I see your point. Don't advertise if you have no one staying there or an alarm system.

I agree with your statements. But how many people really do go the extra mile and do these? I also have a neighborhood watch, but that only works if your neighbors are looking out for you. Ask yourself this question, How often when you are home do look outside at the neighbors houses? Everyones answer will differ. Then ask yourself do my neighbors look at my house that much?

Be careful with that, because if you or your house sitter does have to shoot someone, a twisted lawyer could use what you just posted against you or them. Think in terms of "See he posted that he gladly tells when he is away, so his house sitter can shoot someone." I understand and am on your side, but not everyone in society that could be on a jury is.

I just thought of something. Hopefully it never happens but, your insurance company refuses to pay to replace your stolen items, since they saw you posted when you were not home on the internet for all to see. Don't say it can never happen.

LOL Sorry, but here in Indiana, if you break into a home the person who owns the home or who is responsible for the home can shoot and kill you. Flat out, no if ands or buts about it. I mean, don't shoot them in the back because that shows an intent to flee when the shot is fired. And I hope a lawyer does look at this if this situation does happen. Good luck trying to convince the district attorney to even press charges let alone have 12 perfectly rational people buy that it was an attempt by me to have some random stranger break into my home so I or my brother could shoot them. LOL :ROFLOL:

I tell you what, I'll make it much simpler.... I won't tell my homeowners insurance what my real name vs my WDWmagic name is. ;) I seriously doubt that my insurance agent is going to scour the internet and come across WDWMagic and say "You know what? I bet you the policy holder has an account here. Let me start guessing which one belongs to him. Eeny Meeny Miney Mo...."

This is why I plan on being homeless and living under an overpass. Fewer worries.

Good call. I was thinking van down by the river, but no way - you're right. Someone could still break into my van. Plus, if I accidentally entered a van occupied by another person, seems like I could be in for some trouble.

I think that posting online while you're away is a double edged sword.

Yes- it shows people you aren't home, thus making your house or apartment a bit more susceptible to theft and/or break-ins.

But it also allows you to check in with the people at home and let them know that you're alive and having an incredible time.

My BF and I did have a laptop with us, but we only used it to entertain ourselves on the plane and at the airport. We didn't even use it because whenever we were at the hotel we were pretty much sleeping or eating.

The key is simply to be careful about what, and where you post. And always remember to have an alarm, or else someone you trust to keep an eye on your place.

My family had a big discussion about this over the 4th of July... My cousins had just come back from WDW, and my cousin was yelling at my mom for posting on his Facebook feed "We know you're at Disney! Post some pics!" He was mad, because he didn't want anyone to know they weren't home. I see his point, but I'm notorious about posting stuff like "So excited to be going to _____" on my feed, so I can't exactly say not to do it. I guess I should be more careful about posting stuff like that; we all like to think we can trust the people we have on Facebook/Twitter/whatever but the sad fact is that sometimes we can't.

It can never happen. No insurance policy in the country has written exclusions for losses caused because you disclosed you were not at home.
