Do most people end up adding on?

nope. We have added on 3 times. When we 1st purchased we were unsure of it so we bought in low ( think it was 160points), we were able to pay it off quickly, then the following yr we bought more, then the following yr we bought more points again, so the points we have has allowed us to stay at WDW for 10 days in a 2bdrm villa and then we have even had a few points left over to go to Vero Beach & Hilton Head, SC.

Not at all, we bought in in '99 at 220 BWV, and as our children grew older and school issues came up we added on 30 points then 25 all at BWV, we then added 25 thru resale at WL, but sold them when BLT was offered and purchased 100 there, with our 3 kids now 18, 11 and 11 (twins) 375 is very flexible for us, and its also divisible three ways. Not sure if we will add on again, we may have reached our max, but then who knows?

Dizzney,

I made a comment that interest me, we purchased in at SSR (320points) we would love to move to BLT but buying more points is not in the budget right now. I was wondering how easy it is to sale your current points to move to another resort? woudl DVC buy it back from you or going to through a timeshare agent better?

We started out with 280 at Hilton Head. I would like to add 100 at Beach club just to get 11 month window there, but no cash.

Sell it through a timeshare agent, we used DCBY resale and it sold fast, we also lucked out since we sold before the market tanked, we posted it the day that DVC announced BLT. We were on a wait list already with our DVC agent for the resort.

Your problem may be the cost as unfortunately now, point values remain down, have you tried booking in at the seven months? If you're not looking for MK view, you probably could get ressies.

We stayed there in the beginning of January for 4 nights in a one bedroon MK view and loved it, next time I would get lake view and use the lounge for the MK view, we like to change and see different views

You know it really isnt a mistake to have bought minimum and then have several add-on's - IF you ever needed to sell a portion you can sell an add-on, you can never break up a contract and sell part and keep part. I have one contract for 220 points, if I had to sell it i would have to sell that in one piece, but I alos have one for 25, one for 30 and my BLT for 100, gives me flexibility if i ever (god forbid) was in a situation that I had to sell some. And on the resale sites the small add-ons sell much faster and at a better price than the large contracts.

Just a comment..........Love my DVC!

Bought 200 at BLT last year and then within 3 or 4 months bought 50 more at AKL. Don't regret any of it since DH and I are taking 4 trips this year!

I agree, very good point. We bought OKW at 220 and have been satisfied with that, no add-ons necessary, but can't say we haven't been tempted when new resorts open up!

The wife and I joined 3 months ago with the minimum 160 points at BLT and we are already considering adding on.

We want more points for cruises and non-DVC hotels (Disneylands Tokyo and Paris) so it doesn't really matter where we buy at, right? Vero Beach is reselling for around $50/point right now which is pretty tempting.

Just make sure you add on witht eh same use year since its a pain if the use years arent the same. I did one addon thru resale taht was different and it was difficult to juggle.

Add-ons can be addicting and I keep wodnering if I will keep my promise to my DH that our BLT add-on will be our last (I did promise with corssed fingers)

Just an FYI, using points for Cruises is not a good idea. It is much, much MUCH cheaper just to book a cruise with cash.

If it is a once in a while type thing, thats a differnet story. But to purchase points with the intent of using them for crusing on a regular basis does not make financial sense.

Just for a quick example, a 4 night cruise on points in the 2010 Value season (Sept) in a category 10, (deluxe inside stateroom) is 84 points per person for the first two people. Add two kids ages 6-12 for 56 points each.

You can check out the point charts here
http://dvcnews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=147&Itemid=121

So that comes out to 280 points. Let's say you are paying $5 a point fees each year (thats a pretty fair average - Vero Beach is quite a bit more per point, thats why it's selling for $50 per point), that comes out to $1,400 dollars in dues for those points. Then you need to add in that $95 fee for booking a cruise on points, so that brings you up to an almost $1,500 direct yearly cost for the cruise.

That same cruise with the same stateroom and people is now available for $1967.88 cash. Chances are it was a LOT cheaper 4 or 5 months ago.

So the cruise is costing you $500 more if you pay cash. But, you had to pay out roughly $14,000 to get those points in the first place (at your $50 Vero Beach). Disregarding interest and the time value of money, you would have to go on roughly 28 cruises to break even. And, since there is a time value of money, and your DVC contract does not last that long, you will never break even.

Not to mention that the number of points needed for a cruise is not fixed, like the total number of points at a resort are. They could bump the cruise points requirements up over time. The have for the most part gone down from 2009 to 2010, but that may be to bring them more in line with the cruise pricing. When cruising goes back up, I am pretty sure the points will as well.

Just to clarify a wee bit, the point values for NON-DVC resorts aren't fixed, either. As rack rates increase at places like EuroDisney, Tokyo Disney, Hong Kong Disney - not to mention the non-DVC resorts at Disneyland and even using points at WDW in moderate rooms or the Poly or GF (can't use them at all in Value resorts...yet), so too can the point values increase.

I can understand wanting to use points in a while for something out of the ordinary, but if you routinely use your points for anything besides staying at a DVC resort, you will not be getting good value for your dollar. Even using points for at an RCI resort, while more "fixed" than the others I described, you can often go online and find rooms at those resorts at affordable prices, and then you'd be better off banking your DVC points for a bigger trip down the road or renting them out for a year.

We're in the process of adding on at BCV - 100 points. We're almost ready to go through ROFR - so we're keeping our fingers crossed. We just bought our first contract/membership less than a year ago. It is addicting!
