Do anything, eat anything kids-control day at WDW

Planning another trip to WDW, and I leave in a few weeks. I really need a vacation. Five days at Shades of Green with side trips to Universal and SeaWorld. It's been a year since I took my last vacation and I flew across country to Disneyland and took in the sights in Anaheim and at Knott's Berry Farm.

Anyway, a few trips ago at WDW, I spent early morning magic hours at Hollywood Studios before continuing onto EPCOT. While walking through Hollywood Studios, it was around 9am, and I was near the Indiana Jones stunt show. I was passing a mother and her young child, and I noticed her child was eating something sweet. I think it was some kind of dessert.

I asked her why she was allowing her child to eat a dessert in the morning, for breakfast, or as a mid-morning snack. She said they were on vacation and home rules don't apply. Or I think it was the mom said the kids had control for a day and they could do anything or eat anything and mom and dad would not get in the way or disapprove.

They were in the midst of a kid-controlled day at WDW. They had one day to do anything, at any time, and her son chose to eat a Mickey ice cream bar. In the morning. For breakfast. They skipped away without a care in the world.

I thought it was amusing. I laughed and said I would agree and thought of what I could do, at any time, drink anything, eat anything, at any time of the day, and don't feel weird about it. Of course, I thought about it but didn't enact on it.

In the next few weeks, I will enact upon it. I wonder if I can get a dessert or something super-chocolatey or sugary before 9-9:30am. I'm not talking about an espresso or cafe au lait or cafe mocha or even a danish or croissant or big banana nut or chocolate chip muffin or even beignets. I drink coffee all the time. No, how about a beer or two a glass of wine or two before 10am.

I didn't inquire last time, but I should.

What do you think? If you have kids or not, would you enact a "kids-control the day" day at WDW?

I've walked into to AK and the first thing I did was go grab a beer. Same with Epcot, but it opened later I think. Nothing quite says vacation like a beer right after rope drop. You could also bring your own and start your day off with an irish eye opener coffee.

Great idea. A beer right after rope drop. Totally agree. We are on vacation. Rules don't apply, well within reason.

I think that would be a fun idea and will certainly let that happen in a few years when my son is old enough. Whats the point of having a vacation if you can't have a little fun.

That sounds a little contradictory, though. You're talking about having a "kids control the agenda" day, but then you go to talking about YOU deciding to have beer or wine at an unusual hour. I thought it was supposed to be about the kids, not you? :ROFLOL:

Anyway, it sounds like an interesting idea, but I'm too much of a control freak on vacation to hand over the reigns to my kid or anyone else. :ROFLOL::ROFLOL:

I love this idea and works well on any Vacation but at Disney it would be great! However, what happens if you don't have kids traveling with you? Wait until they are or is there an Adult version of this? If not maybe a thread should start... What do you think?

Why not? I don't have kids but, we still have house rules. I mean we are both grown adults but there are things that we just do/don't do! During our vacations to Disney we break "our rules" on occassion and how liberating it feels..lol...

We have actually done this with our children. The last time we were down in Disney they were 5 and 7. We had the most fun that week. They did have Cake for breakfast, or pop for breakfast. It is vacation we let them be the leaders. They chose which ride was next, which shows we went to, what time we went back to the hotel.... It was a whole new experience as we got to see the World through their eyes. You will discover so much more. :animwink:

Our vacation is kind of kids choice anyways. We let them pick the rides we go on, I just grab fastpasses like a mad man. Plus my son LOVES pin trading, so when it's just me and him we make about 5 stops before each ride.

My kids have always made the decisions when it comes to being at disneyworld. What rides we go on, where we eat, when to swim, what park to go to for the day, etc. My kids even have the say when reservations are made. My kids rule to roost when we are on vacation at disneyworld. I like living thru my kids eyes when on vacation.

It's all about me. For the past few years I have been taking solo trips to WDW and Disneyland. I'm single and don't have kids. Ladies ... ahem .... ;D

We handle it a little differently, not much but a little. We give our kid $1000 for the week we are at WDW. The kid can spend it anyway and anytime the kid wants. We buy whatever we want when the mood hits, it is vacation after all.

Since it's been about the solo trips for me, I control the agenda and then at the last second flip it on its side and go sideways and roundways, etc. Ride as many coasters as I want, spend a solid hour on the Kraken at SeaWorld (favorite time - during a break from Tropical Storm Fay in August 2008, rode Kraken at least 12 times in 50 minutes - without lines!), hit all 4 WDW parks in a day, and then finish the night at Pleasure Island at the Adventurers Club and Mannequins (sad, RIP).

I know there are a ton of topics on solo trips on this site, but yes, seeing WDW through the eyes and being lead through by a kid, is how it's supposed to be. We are all kids when it comes to vacationing at WDW. Yeah, so I'm planning to do some things a little different. I just hope I don't drink a few or eat too much and then hit Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon moments after.

Here's to a great trip!

Off-topic but for those with young kids, there's a cute non-Disney related book called "Yes Day," about a kid who gets one day each year to do whatever he wants. Each page he asks a "can I/we do this" question, and the next page he's doing it. Most importantly, the last question he asks is "Does this day have to end?" To which his dad answers "Yes," which kind of brings back the idea that rules and borders are generally good things. A good bedtime story if you read to your kids, and not a bad book for them to read when they first start learning*.

*I almost spelled "learning" wrong. Come on. That would've been funnny**

** I know.

I love this idea. On my first trip to WDW for my honeymoon I felt like a big kid pretty much the whole time but I'm looking forward to when my son will be old enough to be able to try this.
