DL Subs return!

The ride was always pretty bad , even when the park first opened. I remember enjoying it as a small child, but I also remember quickly outgrowing it. The worst part about this ride, and the one aspect, that always made me dread riding it, were the long lines. But don't misinterpret that statement, these long lines were not caused by the ride's popularity, but by how sloooooooooooooooow the loading process and offloading procecess were. Nonetheless it is a shame something isn't being done about that space either create a similar submarine ride themed to a different flick or build something behind it or over it that can somehow make use of the lagoon in some fashion.

Answers to several posts:

DL 50th is in 2005, which means they will start sometime in 2004 to get the most from merchandising.

The DL and WDW were very similar as Space Mtn is similar in both parks. Similar does not not 100% the same, but 85% the same. If I had to pick which one is better, I couldn't.

For those of you who have never been on the ride or want a refresher I have posted a WDW 20K LUTS on #Disney-Central. It was shot in 1991 and captures the ride pretty well. I think there are DL ones as well but not my capture. I think I have some footage somewhere if one is needed for DL.

Just to clear up any confusion, the Disneyland Resort's 50th Anniversary Celebration begins in April of 2005, and ends in October-November of 2006--18 months (although I will bet money it will be extended to January 1st, 2007...).

That's usually how they do the celebrations (WDW, anway)... It's probably some sort of publicity method.

Hey, since Disneyland's New Tomorrowland is more like Discoveryland in Paris, would the current subs at Disneyland fit in with the new theming? I mean, they are bright yellow, aren't they? That wouldn't look too hot in among all the browns and golds and stuff, would it? I dont know, but it seems like 20k subs would fit well in DL's new Tomorrowland, not that that matters, because they cant get the MK subs back, and Disney surely wont spend the cash to get all new subs.

I never thought of that... hmm... how true that is! The WDW subs would fit in much more now..

The subs/ride vehicles haven't been in the lagoon for quite some time. I believe they were removed either when "New" Tomorrowland opened or when they redid the Autopia. And since it's already been mentioned that some of the subs were scrapped or put to other use, they might opt to redo the vehicles. But...with that said, between the two "fleets" (meaning DL's and MK's), they probably have enough that they could use. All they have to do is strip the outside shell (mainly just fiberglass anyway) and put on a new shell--something that would fit into the color schematics of the current "New" Tomorrowland.

I think rehabbing the ride vehicles is the easy part. As someone else stated, the ride itself was in pretty bad condition and the effects were very 1960's. Let's hope that Disney is smart enough to put a few $$ into the reopening and redo the ride in a way that at least makes it look less decayed.

BTW--my two daughters are thrilled that this ride may be coming back. My eldest went on it twice at a very young age. She thought it was pretty cool. And my youngest was born at about the same time the ride closed and has only heard tale of the ride. So nice that they are finally filling in some holes in the once glorious DL landscape.

I bet the subs will have a "Finding Nemo" theme in the end, Eisner really wants to keep the PIXAR contract.

If they do go in and get the subs running then it opens up possibilities of an Australian Great Barrier Reef with Great Whites.

Myself I would rather see a fleet of Capt. Nemo's Nautilus' type of subs. Find or rebuild the giant octopus from the 1959 movie and have it in the cave.

I doubt it, a finding Nemo overlay would be more than Disney wants to spend on this baby, besides the rumors that Disney wants to make a Pixar land in DCA, which actually makes sense, being that Pixar is a California Company, compared to other previous additions to the park.

Anyway, it'll be least expensive, (if it's as easy as DisneyNutCase described it) to just change the subs into a fleet of Nautiluses. This happening as the New Tommorowland becomes more and more of a Discoveryland. That way they won't have to change too many show scenes and everything can stay the same for the most part.
