DL hotel question

We've been up to DL/DCA many times (we live in San Diego County) and usually stay overnight off-property. However, we are going up there with family this summer and have decided to take two rooms at Disneyland Hotel (I hope).

I'm just verifying, though -- one can take the Monorail from the DLH direct to Disneyland after park opening, without going through the front gates, as long as one already has tickets to the park? (We are picking up tickets through the military base, as we always do.)

Also, don't waste your money on the Disneyland Hotel. There are partner hotels that are much cheaper, and offer pretty much the same experience.

The OP has already decided to stay at the DL Hotel.

The Monorail stops in DtD, which is close to the DL Hotel. There isn't a stop directly in front of the hotel.

Well, it sortof is. It's right past the big hat...

It's not directly in front of the hotel, though. It's not like in Tomorrowland, where you can walk off the Nemo Subs and go straight up the stairs to take the Monorail in two seconds.

I stayed there in Feb, and wasn't a fan.

That's fine, but you're not helping the OP. They've already made their choice.

Fair enough. Yes, you can take the Monorail into Tomorrowland from the DL resort.

Considering you are military, I'd suggest strongly that you look at other options as far as resort stays.

So if you saw someone about to jump off a bridge would you walk on by because "they'd made their choice"?

He gave another sensible option which IS helping the OP. just saying "don't stay there" wouldn't be helping but he gave other options.

I know you snort pixie dust but maybe we should find out why the OP has decided to stay at DL hotel and if those reasons could be obtained elsewhere for cheaper we could make him have a better vacation with more money to spend in the parks!

Imagine if he stayed there and was disappointed!

It used to be right in front of the hotel, but the hotel has migrated Westward over the years. ;) It's still very close, so it will be convenient for the OP.

So Disneyland Hotel = jumping off a bridge??????????????

It's not as if every single person who stays at the Disneyland Hotel hates it and you're saving the OP from guaranteed disappointment. There are plenty of people who like DLH. The folks from Mousetalgia podcast like the Disneyland Hotel and they've sampled a wide variety of on- and offsite hotels. The OP has been to DLR "many" times. They normally stay offsite. They want to stay at the Disneyland Hotel this time.

@englanddg, maybe you could share with the OP what exactly you didn't like about the Disneyland Hotel? Instead of the super-vague "wasn't a fan"?

Is this post a joke? You're really comparing staying at a hotel to jumping off a bridge and committing suicide? The hell?

In case you're not joking, re-read the post. The OP is a Disneylander, living in California. I can bet they know about Disneyland more than you and englanddg. They've been many times and they already know the deal with on and offsite hotels because THEY FREQUENT DISNEYLAND AND LIVE IN SOCAL. I could see if the OP was a first-timer.

I don't smoke pixie dust, and you know that. Where is this post coming from? The OP has been staying offsite for years. They should be able to treat themselves and stay onsite, if they want to, without people saying " Well why do you want to stay there?" Sheesh.

Thank you! This is exactly why we're friends. Love you!:)

I remember when the stop was right in front of the hotel. I don't exactly remember when it was changed, though.

My bridge analogy was just to put it into context!

Very childish to assume someone from SoCal instantly knows more about DL than me... Not that it's a contest!

I happen to LOVE the DL hotel but the DL hotel doesn't have a monorail stop directly outside/inside a-la the contemporary at WDW. But WE still haven't found out what the OP's needs are and the features and benefits that will satisfy his/her needs to stay or not to stay at the DL hotel.

Still, suicide and choosing a hotel are two, vastly different analogies that don't make sense to compare.

I don't see how it's childish at all. It's a good point to my argument, really.

The OP established what her needs were in the opening topic, and that's where the Monorail stops. Not if she should or shouldn't stay at the DL Hotel and not if she should or shouldn't stay offsite. You guys would have a point if, like I said, this was the OP's first visit.

Actually, we haven't made the reservations yet, though I did inquire through Disney Travel about hotel availability, military rates, etc. I don't pretend to know everything about DL/DCA even though we do live 90 minutes away, though I wish I did. :) I am still balking at the price per night to stay at the DLH. Paradise Pier wasn't much cheaper. (We had a really NICE rate last year at WDW, at Pop Century.)

A friend of mine recommended Candy Cane Inn. We've never stayed there, so I'm also looking into that. We usually stay at the Best Western Stovall's, but they are higher than they've been *and* no shuttle service to the park. Plus they now charge per day for parking.

The DL Hotel is an amazing property, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, the cost alone will keep me from going back there anytime soon. There are just too many partner hotels with better prices that are only yards away.

The "onsite" benefits just wern't worth it to me, and outside of the pool (which is a really great pool), you can do all the stuff at that hotel (Steakhouse 55, Trader Joes, etc) without having to be a registered guest.

Of course, everything is worth a try once. Had I not stayed there, I'm sure I'd be looking back and saying "gee, I wish I'd stayed there!". I have nothing bad at all to say about the hotel...except that it wasn't worth the cost.

Also, if you want objective critique, the rooms, though well decorated, were rather small, and the shower was terrible (poor water pressure, and that's one of those things that grinds my gears). Also, the Wifi, while it works well in the rooms, does NOT work well in the pool area, which was very annoying.

If you're still kinda sorta searching for a hotel, Mousetalgia just did a podcast last week about pros and cons of all of the onsite hotels and some tips and recommendations for some offsite, too. Mousetalgia

Also, I think Wikimapia is very useful for seeing all of the hotels that are close to Disneyland.

Don't feel bad if you don't want to spend the money for an onsite hotel... it looks like I'll be spending another Disneyland vacation commuting from Torrance. :(

The hubby and I have talked about going to DL forever. One of the big debates is spending the big bucks to stay at the Disneyland Hotel which is what we really, reeeeaally would like to do. One of the biggest arguements against off-site is the Magic Hour/Magic Mornings. But, I know us and if we stayed anywhere else we'd feel like we left something on the table we really wanted.

We've actually been tossing around many ideas for our 20th anniversary this year. Have you looked at hotels in the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco??? Holy crap! At this point we really are leaning more and more heavily towards DL & the DLH. :D
