Dixie Landings

Maybe its on here and I just couldn't find it. But trust me I did search, I know how aggravating it is to keep answering the same questions over and over. But why the change from Dixie Landings to POR??? Was it the whole Dixie, and being what some people associate with that word?

I believe that it was partly to do with the use of the word Dixie and the implications of the slave trade.............................But mainly when POFQ and DL became one large resort, the name was changed to POR at that time

A manager sat with us in the food court just before the change. He wanted to share the reasoning behind the name change and, possibly, get our reaction.
(At first we thought he was coming over because we were using our old mugs. Not so.)
It was all the little things put together that made some people feel uncomforatble he said and that's not what WDW is all about.

Dixie Landings + name of the food court was The Colonel's Cotton Mill + there were bales of cotton as decorations + the lounge, now River Roost, was called the Cotton Exchange (I think), etc.

The name change was a good idea. 'Port Orleans Riverside' captures the theme. The buildings and the landscaping are beautiful and unchanged.

:)

If you were curious when this took place...

On April 1, 2001 Disney's Port Orleans Resort and Disney's Dixie Landings Resort officially merged to form a single resort called Disney's Port Orleans Resort at the WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort. The combined resort was renamed simply Disney's Port Orleans Resort with the area, formerly known as Disney's Port Orleans Resort, changing its name to the French Quarter region, and the area, formerly known as Disney's Dixie Landings Resort, changing its name to the Riverside region.

Hey the way I look at it is...Ya can't change history, so deal with it. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the name. For anyone who did or still does...it's time you move on. This resort will always be Dixie Landings to me.

You're right! You know, the Swastika was a Nativa American symbol for Love. I think I WILL get that tattoo!

Maybe the subtlety is lost on you, but it's one thing to try to change history, it's another thing to have the harsher lessons of history thrust upon you while trying to enjoy a family vacation. Whatever your nationality is, imagine having a hotel dedicated to the suckier aspects of that nationality's history...

What am I talking about? If you're American, "Dixie" is part of your history too. And you choose not to get it. Never mind.

Yes I agree.....its time to move on and forget the past.....But I also don't think its fair for people of all kinds of different nationalities and ethnicities to have to stay there and be ok with the ties to "deep ol' south."

Yeah I do appreciate the info. I like knowing the whole story and not just a few bits of information.
