Hi,
I was reading a thread about Song of the South (which is still in the Disney Movie forum, at least it was last time I checked) and it said something about Dixie Landings getting it's name changed or something because it was politically incorrect. Sorry if I have it all wrong but I am really confused, can someone help me out?
Thanks,
Kevin
PS. If this is just a misunderstanding, please tell me.

Doesn't "Dixie" refer to the South during the slave days ?

After all the drama with the Rebel flag in South Carolina, they might be distancing themselves from controversy?

do the dixie chicks need to change their name? And, shouldn't Song of the South be changed to Song of the southern states? PC goes way to far people. Leave it be already. It's just a name.

Oh, and Dixie does NOT refer just to the south during slave times, it is a term that has been around long after the slave days to refer to the south eastern area of the U.S., just as we have the mid-west, the west coast, we have Dixie. (Hence, Dixie Highway), and the naming of the region actually evolved from railroad transportation (one of the old time railroads, I believe it was the Old Dominion Lines, used to claim service South od the Mason-Dixon Line... hence, way down south in Dixie)

I never quite understood why they changed it. Does this mean I can't use my Dixie Landigns refillable mug at the food court! haha...

Umm... I've been wondering this ever since I was a junior member, but why are some words written in red font.
I saw this on the links DisneyPHD posted, it was like this:
Dixie Landings got a name change.

The Birnbaum guide to WDW has always said in the description that the name Dixi came from what farmers in the south used to call a coin. When they went to sell their crop they would recieve 'dixies' in return...just a term for money I think.

And Dixie LAndings name was changed...

Now both Port Orleans and Dixie go under the name Port Orleans...the Port Orleans side is French Quarter and the Dixie Landing side is called riverside.

Hope I cleared things up a little. :)

Well, just relaying where the term came from... Dixi would have been the paper money that farmers would have received, however, it was a slang term, just like greenbacks or benjamins today.

i completely agree, kaos! it DOES go too far! i can see how in some cases 'political correctness' is needed...but when people get offended about something from the past (such as, in this case, a name/nickname from the past) and demand it be changed...that's ridiculous! you can't change the past...all you can do is learn from it! and if we censor the past, how will future generations EVER learn from the mistakes of the past? and like you said, kaos, it's JUST a name! in Dixie Landing's case, no matter what it means, people associate the word dixie with the southern US (unless they're talking about Dixie Cups :animwink: ) SO calling a resort Dixie Landings only refered to the resort being themed as southern US...now how anybody can get offended by this, i'll never know!

That has not been implemented in the resorts yet, and at the current time there is no plan to put it there (as far as we know). So for now it is OK to use them.

I heard the term was named after money also. When the French would come into New Orleans to buy and sell goods, they would pay with money that was called "Dieux" or shortened to "Dix" which I think means ten. I think the money was in increments of 10.

All I'm trying to do is keep things somewhat uncluttered. I'm sorry that I don't like seeing 3 or 4 threads about the same stupid topic that are each growing in length. I'd much rather see ONE THREAD THAT IS ALREADY LONG grow longer instead of seeing 2 or 3 others grow to be that length.
