Disney's Vacation Insurance option. Must buy now or can you add on later?

Is it possible to add on vacation insurance at any point after making your reservation or is it something you can only add when you make your initial reservation request?

I added it when I booked my vacation package last week when I thought I would be booking airfare this week but now cannot. Since my entire vacation depends on whether or not we can afford the airfare I'd rather wait to add vacation insurance until I have my plane tickets in hand.

Since I only have two weeks to cancel to get a full refund, I would like to cancel the vacation insurance now and sign up for it later when we have the plane tickets ordered if possible.

P.S. I saw J.P. posted a link to the DW policy disclaimer recently in another thread but unfortunately it is not the one for WA State residents...don't quite get what makes us different from the rest of the States.. If anyone knows the link for the WA State policy disclaimer, that'd be great :)

Once you add the insurance it is non-refundable, even if you call the next day to cancel your reservation you will not get insurance fee back. You will not get the full $200.00 back should you cancel. I never, ever advise people to add the insurance until they make final payment 45 days prior to arrival for exactly this reason.

Hi Portia, Actually Carolyn isnt entirely correct. If you cancel up to the 45th day prior to your arrival you will get the entire $200.00 back without the insurance.
Once you add the insurance it is not refundable for any reason nor can it be removed.
If you do decide to add it, you may add it up until the due date of the final payment. Keep in mind that the airfare will be covered regardless of if you purchase it through Disney or on your own. If you cancel within the 45 days up to your arrival date there are penalties depending on how close in to the date of your arrival you cancel. Belle

That is exactly what I said. Once the insurance is paid, they will not get the $200.00 back. With no insurance on the res you will get the entire $200.00 back even up to the day before arrival, not including air. Disney has no control over airline penalties. However, my experience, and that's 10 years with the res center, if you make a big enough stink, and cancel prior to final payment being made, they will take off the insurance. Truth be known, Disney does not pay for the insurance until finall payment is made, so just ask for a supervisor and watch how fast they will take off the insurance.

Sorry Carolyn, I read it as you were talking about the trip, not just the insurance!!!! Belle

Absolutely no need to apologize!! Insurance is by far one of the most confusing issues. Presumptive selling is a nightmare as most Disney agents are told to just add it on. I feel it is necessary to have, but do not think it should be added until final payment is made, unless they have air. Even with air, with most of it being non-refundable air, it is still iffy. When asked if they should have insurance on a package, I always relay this story. A man & his family checked in to AKL. Within 5 minutes of being in the room he told me his 7 year old climbed up on the bunk bed, fell off and broke her arm and they had to return home. This is where he wished he had the insurance as it would have covered the rest of his trip. That is where people really lose money without insurance. So I always tell them to add it at final payment.

I could tell you some stories that would make your head spin......

Hmm..I was told by the agent that travel insurance was non-refundable 14 days after making the reservation, meaning that I had every opportunity to cancel before then. Seems I should call and clarify?

UPDATE: I got the vacation insurance canceled and off my vacation package with no problems or being charged anything. It seems as long as you do it within two weeks of making your reservation, you can do so and get the cost refunded off your package..BUT..if I was to add it on at a later time, it then would be non-refundable.

Yeah, I hear you there. I didn't even realize that the Disney insurance policy information I was looking at didn't apply to me because I was a Washington State resident. How's that one? What exactly makes me different from all the other states? At least now I have the time to actually look into it before I made a decision to go with Disney's travel insurance which I plan to do only when I've purchased the airfare.

Actually it should have never been given to you in the first place. Have no clue Washington is omitted but will try and get you an answer to that one.

To clarify...

The non-refundable insurance policy differs depending on how your reservation is booked.

If you book with any Travel Agency - Insurance is non-refundable once the deposit is paid.

If you book online (disneyworld.com) - Insurance is non-refundable once the deposit is paid.

If you book by phone with the Disney Reservation Center (407-W-DISNEY) - Insurance is refundable up to 14 days after the reservation is booked. If a reservation is booked inside of 14 days prior to arrival the insurance is refundable up to 1 day prior to arrival, Vacation insurance becomes non-refundable on the first day of travel. If insurance is added anytime after the date the deposit is paid, the insurance is non-refundable once added.

Also note:

To see the policy disclaimer prior to purchase, go to www.disneyworld.com/insurance

State of Washington Residents must contact Travel Guard directly to obtain your state-specific insurance policy. Please visit www.insureamerica.com or call 715-346-0860. Your policy disclaimer is not available directly through Walt Disney World or it's website.

Insurance can only be added to Walt Disney Travel Company reservations. It is not available for Room-only Reservations.

Insurance may be added to your WDTC Vacation Package anytime prior to the reservation being paid in full. Once full payment has been applied, the insurance can no longer be added.

Coverage is effective once a deposit has been applied and ends on the earlier of:
  • the scheduled trip completion date
  • the actual trip completion date
  • the insured's arrival at the return destination on a round trip
  • cancellation of the trip covered by the policy
  • up to 180 consecutive days

Guests are covered from the time they leave their house to begin their vacation, to the moment they return to their house at the conclusion of their vacation.

Insurance must always be purchased by all adults age 18 and over in the room. When insurance for the adults is added, children (aged 17 and under) are automatically covered at no addtional charge.

Insurance is not available to International guests, except guests from Canada, Mexico and Bermuda. Insurance is also available to guests from Puerto Rico.

In the rare occasion when a guest must book multiple packages, they need only purchase one Insurance Policy to cover all dates, provided the dates are contiguous.

Even if the Guest has insurance, WDTC will still impose and collect change and cancellation penalties. The Guest must file a claim with the insurance company to reimburse the penalties.

Judgment on whether the cancellation or change reason is valid for reimbursement lies with the insurance company. WDTC cannot guarantee that any penalties or losses will be reimbursed.

If the reservation dates are modified, the insurance must be repurchased or the new travel dates will not be covered. Guest have option to submit a claim under the initial policy per insurance guidelines to recover the cost of the insurance plus any applicable change fees.

After the insurance takes effect, the premium will be withheld from any refunds plus any applicable cancellation or supplier fees. Guest must contact Travel Guard to determine if the cancellation or supplier fees are reimbursable.

If you have a specific insurance question that is not covered within this information, please contact Travel Guard at (800)826-3899. Refer to product #004258.

Was going to post travel guard number...but saw you had it on the bottom. But as you and I know very well, if they make a big enough stink, Disney will take the insurance off unless they have "air" booked.
