you can be sure the new resort will have a level of theming on par with the Riviera... That is the new way of things.
We stayed at Riviera in the 3 bedroom suite...which was very nice, but did not feel in any way like a Disney property...it felt like any other Marriott hotel... Plain nicely manicured grounds, Plain nice pool... Nothing that felt like classic Disney...
Hopefully these will be in keeping with the renovated studio units at Poly, which are really, really nice.

RIP Spirit of Aloha. I went to it many years ago before I became a CM on the "Once of a lifetime" trip before all the kids left the nest. Got that pic in my CM gift frame and still have the coconut

that housed the drink my now late daughter got. A wonderful memory.

I never got around to seeing it, but this show was one of the things that made Walt Disney World what it was.

It goes back to the idea of a "vacation kingdom" with a wide variety of activities instead of just theme parks and hotel rooms.

Also, perfect timing to get rid of an opening day attraction that would otherwise be celebrating 50 years with the rest of the resort...

We went to the Luau on our honeymoon in 1996. I'm sad to see it go. (Old bad pictures:)

Luau - 1996, Kevin and Tammy by Kevin, on Flicker Luau - 1996, Disney by Kevin, on Flickr
My wife and I did the same thing a year later! Honestly, after going to this 17 years apart (we went on our honeymoon in 1997, and with our three kids in 2014) I can say that it didn't hold up well. The food was just slightly better than average (like it was ok but not worth raving about), and the experience was...fine both times. It's exactly what you'd expect from a luau if you ever saw one before live or on TV. It didn't seem to be worth it to my wife and I to pay out of pocket or to use 2 table service meals per person for it ever again, back when that was a thing. I know the performers and servers put in a lot of effort, but this is about the most basic a luau can be IMO.

My wife did take her mom to Hawaii once a few years after our honeymoon with a travel group, and they went a luau on the big island. She said the dancing, music and food were much better in Hawaii.

My $0.02 on this is that once again Disney is focusing on what will bring them the best revenue and profits in every area now and in the next 5-10 years. We all roll our eyes at stuff like this, but there will be people lining up to give disney their money. Personally, a DVC share which overlooks the water and faces the magic kingdom's fireworks sounds really nice, if you can afford it. If people will line up for a freaking figment popcorn bucket all the way around EPCOT, surely there will be several thousands of people (or however many they sell) who want a piece of this.

I know what you mean in general, but it does have a Fantasia themed splash pad which a friend rated as the best on property.

Actually, for our 25th anniversary we did a Luau on Kauai last year. (In that picture, we don't look like 2 kids barely old enough to drive, let alone get married!) I don't remember the WDW one well enough to compare, but the pre-closing WDW price was actually cheaper than the Hawaiian luau. And the food probably just as good - Hawaii was fine, but nothing to get too excited about. (I'm not sure it's possible to serve a few hundred people simultaneously and have it be spectacular.)

yeah, nothing to rave about. But, it was my kids' first Luau. And, there are much better shows. Sorry to see the property get turned into DVC; it's a big money grab for D. I keep thinking that people will wise up and turn their back on them. But, I'm ALWAYS wrong on that count. So, you do what you can. No longer our vacation destination. But, we get to keep the memories and they can't charge for them!

Looks like Hoop Dee Doo is also not coming back. I just saw on twitter that some bluegrass act is replacing it. What the hell is happening to this place. They continue to just make mediocre replacements fo replace well thought out entertainment and atractions.

I like bluegrass, and would probably enjoy that more than the actual Hoop Dee Doo show (never seen it but doesn't seem like my cup of tea)... but it's definitely not an equal replacement. Some live music is not the same thing as a dinner show, if that's all it is.

It's possible it's a whole new dinner show focused around bluegrass, though. Much too early to know anything for sure.

Disney already debunked that. It was nothing more than the guy from the “other site” making things up. Again.

There’s a discussion in the Hoop Dee Doo thread.

I didn't think it was debunked -- didn't someone confirm it was an option they were considering? Just not definitely happening yet.

EDIT: Never mind, I see they eventually confirmed there will be changes but it's not being completely overhauled.

From the update: UPDATE as of 4:30 p.m.: A Walt Disney World representative has reached out to stating that this rumor is not true. Avery Maehrer of the Walt Disney World Communications team contacted us directly to let us know that Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue will allegedly not be replaced. When asked if Disney wanted to make a further statement about what the future holds in terms of the fan-favorite show, Maehrer had no further comment.

Seems debunked to me.

Disney has abandoned many of its traditions. Its sad, but change in inevitable, good and bad. I would hope that this generation would find more to celebrate. When the Luau was opened it was exotic and a window into another culture, and to be celebrated. There must have been better options that this.
