Disney's problem with 2D Animation

It may be as simple as "earning your spot" mentality. It IS a shame that some folks who've humped it in the voice acting field for years in commercials and animated series often get relegated to supporting or background roles in features.

No, it's just that Disney doesn't seem to care anymore about professionals.

Technically, all actors paid to lend their voice talents to an animated feature are by definition "professional". When they cast Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber in Die Hard, was that wrong? Because up until then he'd only done stage work, and really, that role should have gone to a FILM actor.

Acting is acting. Generally speaking, at least as far as voice work goes, they'll hire the person they think best fits the character.

So live-action actors aren't professionals?

Professional ACTORS? Sure. Professional VOICE ACTORS? Depends.

You've got your John Goodmans, your Martin Shorts, your Steve Buscemis, the kind that have done almost as much animation as they have live action. And then you have cases where the actors do ONE animated movie and never do voice acting again.

So?

1. Gotta start somewhere.
2. How hard can it be for an actor to catch on?
3. Clearly there are reasons for getting established names just like any other movie.

I can't bring myself to care about this.
